Tomorrow afternoon we anticipate releasing Elemental Beta 1G. This is the last of the Beta 1 series.
To reiterate, our betas are not your typical beta. They’re effectively alphas in that there is very little “game” there. It’s mostly about getting early adopters and us talking together about game mechanics and giving each other ideas.
I’ve written this before but in a modern TBS game, it’s 80% engine/assets and 20% “game” (in other genres it’s more like 90% engine/assets and 10% game). So the purpose of the beta 1 series has been to just let people (and us) try out different game mechanics. You are getting to see the sausage factory up close which – for us and our beta group is a big part of the “fun” (in a perverse way).
We will have a detailed change log but it’ll be so insanely long that it’ll be hard to tell what the big new things are.
In no particular order:
IMPORTANT NOTES:
This beta is going to be buggy and incomplete. There’s lots of obvious stuff that just doesn’t work yet or is just plain broken. Bear with us as a lot of “stuff” has come together in the past few weeks from the various groups.
What we are looking for are crashes in particular and memory leaks. When the game crashes, if you can send us as much information as possible (particularly the crash location) that would be great.
See this post: https://forums.elementalgame.com/364285 to get started.
WHEN should the game be fun?
Realistically, Beta 2 should have the game mechanics sufficiently far enough that it should be “fun”. We will not go to beta 3 until the beta group consensus is that it is ready to progress to beta 3 in terms of “fun” and reasonable stability.
WHEN can I get into the beta?
Officially the answer is Beta 2 which won’t be until mid next month. However, if you have pre-ordered (or plan to pre-order) we may open the beta for one day this next Thursday and let everyone who has pre-ordered the game up till then in so that if we have to delay beta 2, users aren’t having to keep waiting and waiting because we want to get their feedback in before we go to beta 2.
WHEN is the game supposed to come out?
We are looking at late Summer. If we’re done sooner, it’ll come out sooner (probably not) if it takes longer for it to be what we want, it’ll get delayed. I want to make sure we’re all on the same page here: This game matters a lot to us. We’ve been thinking about Elemental for a long time so we want to make sure it’s just right. We self-fund our own titles so there is no “publisher” to pressure us.
That said, based on our internal builds (which includes the full engine that users will get in beta 3) we’re looking at end of August as being fairly safe. If people compare Beta 1D (December) to this beta (2 months later) I think they’ll see how dramatically things have changed. 6 months is a long time but we’ll see.

Staging now.
edit: Once staged, we'll have to do a quick test internally then we can push it out to you guys.
Great!
To have lots of people isn't always good, it depends. And Stardock has all the rights to decide who they allow to beta test, why they allow it, when they allow it and any other detail about it. I trust more Stardock's experience and criteria about this stuff. And it's not like people not in the BEta cannot give feedback in the forums. They are open for everybody and anyone can comment based on what beta testers and devs say.
People outside beta havent missed anything yet I would say. Much more info in the forums than in the skeleton game.
The equal signs in Outlaw's name break the quotes. If you edit to remove them, it fixes things.
As for the other stuff... for people already in beta, you won't get an email when 1G is up. Impulse's tray app will notify you, I think. You'll also see posts here. When beta opens back up and new people get in, those people will get emails (because your credit card is being charged).
In terms of not letting people in, well Boogie talked about that. Beta 1 has been a real mess gameplay wise, letting someone read some hype article on Gamespot and then immediately joining would lead to a lot of disappointment when they expect a nearly finished game and get what we've got.
You will be let in, and there's months of beta left for you to suffer crashes and all the other fun. (And give your head a shake, this is a video game. Beta access is not a "right".)
Can I play the beta on a computer without internet access???
OMG, this is better than waiting for Christmas morning. Now that I am old. LOL
We are being "Staged".
I like the sound of that.
P.S. Thanks
I haven't played since the first beta... But I imagine it's more like a 'game concept simulator' than an actual game at this point...
fogbuz.com was acting up as well.
Couldn't get logged in.
But I am afraid it may just be me.
If someone could check it or post a positive on that.
No.
Is that going to be all the way through the beta process?
It's so they can make sure that everyone is testing the same version and not bringing up errors from 2 betas ago
Lol just noticed a little bug in the screeny at the top. Unless im mistaken, Lorina wouldn't be a King, would she
I know its a WIP, just made me smile when I realized
I wonder if we need to uninstall the old build?
He was busy deploying, during the Staging. Hell I missed it to. Well seen
The twitch is back.
I don't know how long it's going to last, but it's the case for the moment and likely through the entire beta 2 phase (since it's the multiplayer beta).
I do know that the release version won't require Internet to play, so presumably that requirement will get turned off at some point in beta. I have no idea when, though.
They haven't said. Of course the complete game won't need internet.
"I wonder if we need to uninstall the old build?"
Impulse should handle it. Gonna be a beast though.
The only way (that I know of) to get the files needed to play the Beta is to download them through Impulse. I suppose it's possible for Stardock to host them on this site, but I don't see why they would when they have the distributing power of Impulse.
I feel for you, my friend. For 10 years I lived in a area with No Cable Internet. There was spotty dial-up, and even spottier satellite internet. Both sucked. No way to get a decent enough connection to play even the simplest online game.
Release won't require it, so presumably at some point in beta it'll get turned off. But I have no idea when, and my guess is not soon since beta 2 is the multiplayer phase.
Wintersong I really don't care what you think. Alot of people preordered it with the belief that they would get into the beta. And yes we did pay money, the money is on hold in the bank and as soon as stardock hits the button, it gets transfered. And if people are told to just wait till mid march or later, then there was absolutely no point in preordering, since the game is going to release in september. So yes, because we put money into this, we should be allowed to test and review, that's good consumer relations. Of course they could just shaft us and let only a handful review it, then people might as well just revoke their preorder and move onto something else.
Just because you are Member No.2,550,728, doesn't mean you have better imput then other people that came later. Getting as much imput into beta 1 as possible is very important. The more people the better, because you are selling to the masses, not a handful of beta testers. I come here, because I want to help the game, not get into a stupid fight with you.
The money accessed by the banks is typically only held for a short time as part of a transaction to confirm you actually have that amount available.
You're not charged anything until you can actually participate in the beta or have the released game as far as I'm aware.
I'm sorry, but neither you nor anyone else has even the slightest, most remote "right" to access the beta whenever you so please. By pre-ordering the game you agreed to Stardock's terms, and Stardock's terms are that all pre-orders get access to the next major stage of beta.
Additionally, you were not actually charged for your pre-order. Your bank puts a temporary hold on the money, which is typically released after a few days when no actual charge is made. Some banks are a-holes though and take much longer to release the hold. So you haven't actually paid Stardock a single cent.
Even more importantly, having as many beta testers as possible is not always ideal. I am sure there is actually a happy medium to be found, between too few players to find bugs and suggest new ideas, and too many people flooding forums with an unmanageable amount of suggestions, complaints, etc.
Also, the following quote, made by you, sounds like something stupid one might say during a temper tantrum:
Middle of march is barely two weeks away. Based on the current status of the game, it is nowhere near being even remotely, vaguely finished. There will be an enormous number of features, ideas and bugs to discuss, suggest, criticize and discover for months to come.
Jeez, people really hates me when I disagree with them.
