Ok so I just go the vanilla SoSE a week or so ago, but lurked here enough while it was shipping that I wasn't all that lost when I started. I've only really been playing with the Advent because I had a much more clear vision of how I wanted to play them militarily.... everything built around lums.
I get the Mothership and quick expand, tech to lums and eventually guards with repulse, a little flak to defend the lums, and eventually a halcyon to buff the lums. I also tech beam, health, shield, and hull upgrades. Only playing SP, this had been a devestating fleet so far.
But, I'm ready to take that next step and really learn the higher level stuff that can take me up a notch. More specifically, how to most effectively manage econ, culture, and overall research in general. So my questions are:
1. Culture seems important to the game in general, and Advent even more so. I've almost entirely ignored it. How and when to I properly introduce this.
2. What research techs should I focus on and when to get the most out of my econ... early, mid, late.. whatever.
3. What are the major techs to focus on and what should I ignore... like I said above, I have more of an idea with the hostility tree, but I'm mostly lost with the entire harmony tree. At this point I tech lava or ice depending on the situation and then go for trade ports and resource focus, but that's about it. Like I said pretty much don't touch culture. Any direction with the Harmony techs would be really helpful.
4. Anything else that you can think of that is important that a fairly SoSE educated newbie like me would probably just not realize to implement?
Also, when I feel comfortable with the three races (more threads like this to come for TEC and Vasari in the future) I'll be getting Entrenchement, but not quite yet.
Depends on how many gardas we're talking about and what other kinds of units are on the field. Bombers can take a certain amount of fire from flaks and still fight effectively, but if we're talking about huge formations of flak frigates then bombers are not an ideal unit. Destras, Illuminators, and Disciples are much better choices against a garda-based fleet.
Advent is actually the best-equipped faction to deal with missile barrage. The simplest counters are to use the "detonate antimatter" ability of the Radiance battleship or the "reverie" ability of the Revelation battlecruiser. Both of these abilities will stop missile barrage instantly. The other alternative is to combine guardians with a Progenitor mothership. Use the guardian's special shield ability to reduce damage to your fleet, and then continually use shield restore to replenish your units. You can actually survive missile barrage without taking damage by doing this. Be careful, though, if the enemy disrupts your Progenitor it can turn VERY ugly for you.
No and yes. Gardas will slowly take down your SC, but if you maneuver them properly, you will only be taking 50% of their DPS combined with the -20% accuracy to SC (if I remember right) and the -10% effect of the damage bonus. So you end up only taking 36% of his DPS. So you'll be fine for a while. Besides, if you hit critical mass bombers, it doesn't really matter as you will kill any ship you want to in one-three passes.
And use Detonate Antimatter on the Radiance. It deals good damage, removes AM, interrupts abilities, and disables abilities.
So what would be a good starting fleet? I always use 2 Halcyons but lately this hasnt worked as the Halcyons lack the firepower to do anything serious and even the supporting frigates don't do much.
You have two capital ship choices as an opener for Advent: Halcyon and Progenitor. The Halcyon is a more aggressive choice, the Progenitor a more defensive choice. So yes, if you want damage and power Halcyon is your pick.
As far as Advent capital ships go, they aren't much for stand-alone firepower. That's more what TEC and Vasari capital ships are for. You'll have to lean on your fleet for damage (Halcyon can use fighters or bombers; they key is to pick the right proportion of strike craft for your situation), and that means disciples, illuminators, and to a lesser degree seekers.
Disciples deal plenty of damage, you just need a big swarm of them. If you lead with two Halcyons, you generally won't have enough disciples. Two Halcyons has its place; they're really good against many types of capital ships and can decimate unprepared fleets, but tend to lose against fleets with a single carrier capital and a bunch of frigates. You should probably have at least 10, probably more like 20, frigates to support them.
I generally do not get a fast second capital ship unless my first was a Progen (in which case a Halcyon is very useful) or I'm receiving cash from my allies to make ends meet.
Hmmmm Ok thanks for that Info. Now i hear that seekers are actually good for combat i never use them i thought they were worthless to what extent are they good in combat and should you start out building them or start out with disciples?
Start out with disciples; seekers are a bit more specialized. They're good against other scouts, long range frigates, and siege frigates, and pretty much nothing else. Use them to support your disciples if you see LRF (since disciples are weak to them).
Ah ok. How would you use Aeria Drone hosts and Destra Crusaders what role should they play and what ships should they be partnered with?
Aerie Drone hosts are used for fighters and bombers. You typically want to bring them out later when you want a big swarm of strike craft. Destras are powerful tanks, a good alternative to illuminators (especially next patch when the illuminator damage bug gets fixed). The advantage of destras is they're tougher and deal more damage, the disadvantage is that they lack range, so the repulse ability is effectively useless while you're using destras.
Either way, these are both more mid-late game units, not the stuff you'd bring out near the start. TEC is the only faction that should be going fast-heavy in the current version. Maybe under some specific circumstances it will work for Vasari or Advent, but generally no.
If you just plan to play SP, you don't need to worry about anything that has been said as far as types of units to build (seekers/discples/blah blah) or capships. Just build what you want to build, and win. You like that Revelation battlecruiser? Just build it, or several of them. You like something else? Just build that. You like carrier cruisers? Just build them.
However, if you plan to play MP, what Darvin is saying is VERY significant, so listen to him.
This is for MP im making sure my friend won't be able to beat me for our next game . Ok i'd like an anylization of my fleet right now this is in SP but this is sorta practice against my friend. I have -
Capitals: 1 Radiance, 1 Progen, and 1 Rapture
Cruisers and frigates: 6 Aerias, 11 Destras, 12 Disciples, 19 seekers (heh heh went crazy early in game with those) and 23 Illums.
How is this fleet could it be improved?
"EDIT" By that i mean is it properly balanced.
Not in that order, I hope. Radiance is a poor choice for first capital ship. Typically you should either pick Progenitor or Halcyon as your first capital ship as Advent. Sometimes you need a Progen or Halcyon, but after the first pick you generally can't go too wrong with picking caps as Advent. They're all pretty solid.
If your opponent has lots of strike craft, or your fleet starts getting very large, you should seriously consider the Halcyon. Its telekinetic push ability lets it swat away strike craft with ease, and its energy amplification aura increases the damage of all nearby frigates, making it invaluable to a late-game Advent fleet. Early game, its Adept Drone Anima ability gives it more punch in combat by giving it additional squads.
Typically you either go all destra or all illuminator; 50/50 really doesn't work out all that well. You should also be working in the guardian support cruiser. He can protect your entire fleet and make them take reduced damage. Combine this with your Progenitor to restore shields and you've got a monsterously powerful fleet at your disposal (this is commonly called the "battleball", as Advent players will bunch up all their units into a tight ball to fit into the guardian's special effect radius). If you go with illuminators rather than destras, you can use the "repulse" ability to literally push enemy units away from your fleet. Only units that outrange the illuminator will be able to attack you, which is very useful.
Returning to actually playing sins after a hiatus(couldnt play due a very strange technicallity that i wont mention, to avoid embarassment)
So i have a few questions as i have forgot so much about sins in a short space of time
Will the sentinals(still playing vasari) charged missle ability be able to counter a bomber spam or atleast destroy enough bomber that the squadrons on mu skirantra can mop up the rest. I usually build sentinals in 3:1 ratio with assailants
How many bombers you talking about? If it's just an enemy carrier capship with bombers, make all fighters on your skirantra and that's all you will need. But if the enemy is darkening the skies with bombers from a bunch of cruisers, your skirantra isn't going to come close to cutting it. You will nee a bunch of carrier cruisers yourself, loaded with fighters.
Sentinals do kill bombers, but not that well. Under most circumstances you'll need fighters.
Flak in general will kill bombers, but far less efficiently than they kill fighters.
1. Culture is important, and the good think for Advent is that if you have a volcano or ice, you have to build 2 civ labs, and communion temple research requires 2 labs too.
2. If you have 5+ planets, divination
Knowledge aggregation
and eyes of the believers or something like that
3.
4. DOMINAS + CRUSADERS + GUARDIANS+ LUMS

@origial poster. I have a technique that i use that takes advantage of to underused abilities, and that is often unexpected and very devestating. Gaurdians shield projetion soaking damage for a radiance using animosity. loads of fun. it counters just about everything, except a really large fleet with say, two or more capital ships. and i think this is the third or fourth thread ive suggested this tactic in, i think ill have to come up with a new one.
