Hello all, I'm afraid I have an issue (well, not really, but it's comforting to know) but I have a few GCII expansion-related questions. I currently own only the original Galactic Civilizations and the vanilla sequel (No AP, DA or TA). I would appreciate any answer, because frankly, I can't stand being left in the dark by the conversations on this site and forums, and it impedes my ability to appreciate the expansions. No matter how small or irrelevant (lol) your reply may be, I would appreciate any answer:
1. Is it true that TA and DA use less computer space than vanilla? Because my own computer (the one i use for GC, i lost my disk) is relatively slow and old compared to my normal one, and any increase in FPS and performance would be great.
2. Even I know about the "Environment type" of planets, like Toxic, oceanic. Are there many more? what are they?
3. Seing how each race has it's own tech tree that compliments their style, are the independent techs analougous to other techs in other trees? or are they different and unique?
4. Can you improve upon terror stars via research? I know you can't use constructors to give it weapons (aside from its big laserrey-thingy star kerploder of course) or bonus speed, but can you make it better by getting a "Surperior Terror Stars" aka "+10 speed +10 HP +10 atk/defense?"
5. Does the super breeder (the torian super ability I would think) perk always apply to your race? or just at 100% approval?
6. How do the settings in the expansions "Compare" to the vanilla options? What I mean is, if I set the "Number of Habitable planets" to abundant in DL, will DA and TA galaxies, with identical settings, give me roughly the same result?
7. My final question (for now) is: Will there be a Galactic Civilizations 3/III? I posted a thread Earlier, but had no response.
If you took the time to read that, thank you, I hope you reply.
Oh, one more thing, a few may remember my "Obama gives us ALIENS!! no really" thread, to which I had a few "amusing" "Comments" ("I think you should lay off the 'shrooms" lol). Well forgive me for that greusome post, but yeah...... Back to topic! wait... im done... guess he had a point about the hallucinogenic properties of coffee and toast.
lol all jokes
Hey, so that other thread was from you?
So, regarding your questions, here's what I know about the matter (not that much I'm afraid):
1. According to what I read, TA uses less memory for textures, making it less demanding in terms of ressources. As my PC isn't that old and I don't play the biggest galaxies, I never really noticed, though. However, TA also gives you the ability to add rotating parts to your ships, which again can hit the CPU a bit (so better not use them too much)
2. There's barren, high gravity, toxic, aquatic, radioactive if I don't forgot one
3. Both
4. No, a terror star stays always terror star 1.0
5. Not sure right now, sorry
6. Don't know, but is it that important?
7. I hope there will be, someday
1. I´ve got a pretty old system (a Pentium 4), and DL works *much* faster than DA or TA, even when I disable all difficulties as rotating parts & textures. DA is the worst...
5. Only at 100%.
6. The "Gigantic" galaxy size in DA has the most planets, in TA there is even a greater galaxy size "Immense" but it doesn't seem to have more planets in it, just greater distances.
When you say vanilla, I assume you are referring to Dread Lords. Dread Lords is the original game. Dark Avatar was the first expansion and Twilight of the Arnor was the second and final expansion. Each game version has been patched significantly from the original release so there are some big differences there as well. If you happen to be playing a CD release, I would strongly recommend you update with Impulse.
TA has memory optimizations, but it uses more resources than DA (mainly processing power). DA uses more than DL. Personally, I notice quite a bit of difference in processing speed between the games. It makes sense since there's a lot more stuff to process when comparing DL to TA. As far as memory usage, I haven't checked it myself, but I don't think there's a whole lot of difference there. Video load is probably similar between the game versions as well.
Super breeder only applies when the approval (morale) on a planet is 100%. Overall approval is not a requirement. The bonus doubles the reproduction rate and it makes a huge difference in the progression of the game. IMO, super breeder and super hive are the most powerful super abilites. I like super hive as well because it drastically shortens the turns it takes to fully build planets. That speeds up game progression quite a bit. In order to get super breeder to work well, you you need to run taxes low and utilize as many morale resources as possible.
Galaxy settings vary between the game versions. The main difference is because DL does not have extreme planets. DA and TA galaxy settings yield similar results, but I believe TA has more controls. In any case, you'll need to find the settings you like in each game version. They won't necessarily carry over from one version of the game to the next. Galaxy settings and the number of races enabled have big impact on how the game plays so you'll want to try lots of different combinations.
There's been talk in the dev forum of GC3, but no mention of when it will happen. I'm sure we'll see GC3 one of these days, but Stardock has yet to make any announcements.
Thanks guys for the comments and help, I appreciate it. After all, I just bought DA and TA and am waiting for delivery (problems with download) so it's great to know in advance some variables.
I thought it was funny as hell...but I was recently reminded here, there is no accounting for taste.
The nerfd speed was the biggest adjustment from DL to DA or TA for me. The abundant planet setting behaves basically the same, just more and extreme planets.
