I'm real interested in STO because I like Startrek, and I want a SCi Fi MMO. However, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed that Startrek games tend to, well, suck. It seems like the give the license to stupid developers.
Unforuntately, I've found nothing useful out about it yet. All the "professional" stuff out there is just PR fluff. Well the few user reviews I've seen were written by rabid, frothing, Startrek fanboys who spend all their time bitching about ways that the game is not faithful and accurate to the series. Ok well I don't care about that, I care about one thing: Is it fun to play.
So that's my question here: Any of you in the beta, and if so does it seem like a fun game? Specifics as to what you like and don't like would be great. I'm looking for an evaluation of it as a game, not as Startrek.
You can grab an open beta key off fileplanet and find out for yourself (it's available for non-paying accounts now).
Oh, well ok then. Last I checked they wanted me to subscribe and I'll be damned if I'm giving that crap service any money.
Gah! All the places have no more keys . Oh well.
It's the Champions Online game engine in the Star Trek universe. The beginning missions are actually pretty interesting and fun. However, it eventually devolves into combat mission after combat mission. You will be able to take out entire fleets of ships as a Miranda class cruiser (the same level based system every other MMO uses).
You'll have lots of fun with this game for a week. Depending on how many MMOs you've played before, this may last up to 3 weeks. By then, you'll be out of content except for randomly generated missions. Keep in mind that you play part of the game as your avatar, and part AS A SHIP.
If you've played Champions Online, I'd stay away from this. If you haven't, I'd still recommend waiting 6 months for the price to drop down to $30 or less and for them to add some more content to the game.

You can google for more gems like that. Open beta will, of course, reveal more varied opinions, but very few people who have actually played in the beta love the game (at least WAR had fanboys that were in the beta). All games will have trolls and fanboys, but the ratio is pretty skewed against STO's favor, as you can see by checking out the mmorpg forums:

That sounds really homo...
While I consider myself a huge Star Trek fan, I will not be playing STO. I have followed the game on and off for some time now, and making the Klingons a PVP only faction was the nail in the coffin for me.
Now, while many of the "fan boys" have applauded the decision, I feel this was purely a business decision to rush the game out the door without actually taking the time to develop good PVE content that explores the Honor and Glory of the Klingon empire. I can see why many may think of Klingons as a PVP centric race, I personally was hoping for some quests and storyline that would expand on the Klingon lore, but apparently that wont be added unless there is demand for it after release.
Also, Decypher makes some very good points. It seems like Cryptic is starting an MMO chop shop by taking a franchise and just rushing MMO's out the door using the same engine and ideas. They are already working on a third MMO after just releasing CO and with STO being just on the horizon.
I think I am just going to wait for The Old Republic and see how that goes.
I dont plan to buy this game, but I heard that one of the conditions of the licensetransfer to Cryptic from Perpetual Entertainment was that the game had to be released Q1 2010.
I believe this title will share the same fate as Star Wars Galaxies.
I don't think rotting in the hell of SOE's worst development ideas is that likely for this MMO, at least Tabula Rousa (whatever) was executed with a clean shot to the head rather than being tourture by that smedly guy...
SOE, where failing MMOs go to die horrible unspeakable deaths.
Is the payment a one time thing or is it an online subscription thing and the the cost currently on impulse is jsut to get the game?
Edit: nvm I just check, wow $54 canadian and then a montly fee, no thank you even though I am a huge ST fan
I believe the current costs for Impulse-offered MMOs is the cost of the game+1st 30 days subscription. Additional time requires a subscription. (Except for EVE-Online, where you can use ingame "ISK" to pay for Pilot's License Extensions (PLEXs) that extend game time 30 days).
Pretty much exactly my situation. Trekkie who knows the game is fail.
I think it's a pretty good game and to be honest, I'm a bigger star wars fan. I think ToR might fail. KOTOR was fun, but I doubt it could work with lots of other people. And the cartoon graphics are making me angry
Anyways STO is fun, but kinda buggy atm. It is still in beta though, so I won't say its BAD because of the bugs
Just curious- are you limited to Feds and Klingon, or other groups you can play?
Currently just Feds and Klingon (though you can have different races within the faction). Klingon is not actually a full faction, though, and are more akin to monsters a la PvMP in LOTRO. They say they are adding factions down the line, such as the Romulans, but you might as well buy the game down the line, too.
You can get a lifetime subscription now...
I`ve been playing the open beta for a few days. It`s ok. The ship combat is very similar to star fleet command 3. If you didn`t like that game, You won`t like this. You can move your ship along the z axis in STO, There aren`t top and bottom shield arcs so it doesn`t effect the game at all.
The ground mission`s are standard mmo stuff. I didn`t enjoy them at all. My main problem with the game is that it`s a standard mmo. If you didn`t like the genre before, You won`t like STO. In the few days I`ve been playing the game, I`ve seen alot of "kill 5 of this", "get 5 of these" missions. The missions are pretty dull and repetitive.
When I`m playing STO, It feels very similar to playing the campaign in starfleet command 2 and 3. I think the game has the potential to be a decent mmo. I think I`ll check it out again in 6 months and see where it`s at then. I`m glad I didn`t pre-order it at this point.
After playing the game for a few more days, I can't say if I will buy more time after the first month. I will still get the game and play it, but I may be bored after the first month. We'll see how different the release game is from the beta
Its just ok in my book. Im my opinion Eve Online is better. Maybe an expansion or two might change that.
If I wanted this sort of game, I would play EVE Online ... which is well established with a dedicated and devoted player base.
After the release enthusiasm declines for STO, it is going to be a dabbling player base at best. Water too shallow here.
If only EVE wasn't the most boring game on the planet, I'd be there.
Maybe the next Jumpgate. I'm hoping.
Me too, but that's been delayed for so long now that I'm getting worried about it's future.
Hey after Auto Assault...I don't care when they release as long as its any good.
