I would like to post my distaste to recent comments on my master skin Saboteur. Calling my work "not master skin quality" is below the belt. Especially when it is a drive by comment and the skin has not even been downloaded.
I think if you are going to comment on any skin, it should be at least downloaded and tested before inacurate comments and assumptions are made.
I personally believe that if you have nothing constructive to say about a skin, then please say nothing at all.
I spend many weeks and hours on every skin I do. I pour passion, talent, and knowledge into them. They are tested in every possible way that a skin can be tested, and only then is it submitted. The same goes for cursors, icons, and any matching accessory I make.
I can handle criticism, but only if it is constructive, and accurate based on the downloading of the skin itself.
reply #26 is exactly what is going on, and thankyou Spence for bringing it to light.
as for brushes, this is something i will ask the mods in a pm. I know alot of people use brushes. Thankyou for everyones support, it means alot to me.
well the way i see it is that sometimes you just have to tough it up and accept the fact that not everyone is going to like what you are supplying. Part of that is to take criticism, Be it constructive or not. It's all part of the game. Personally i chose not to purchase vamp's latest skin because to tell the truth it's just not style, I would also never go out and say nasty things about something just because i don't want it. But it's the nature of the beast in this world to face up to some pretty harsh things being said. While it is nice to get that warm and fuzzy feeling when people say nice things about your work regardless if they like it or not, This is the real world and that being said you are gonna have to get used to people being nasty. Toughen up a bit vampy, I am sure this won't be the first time you cop crap from people and it definately won't be tha last. But complaining about it is only going to give those who do say nasty things more ammunition to throw at you.
edit
Sure. Po used some the other day for his latest wall. And he gave credit to the person that created those brushes. The author of the brushes you used asked to be credited and shown what their work was being used in and how it was being used. It's pretty clear cut Vampothikittymaloneika.
Again, I'm the bad guy for saying something about it. So be it. I can carry a heavy load, so lay it all on me. But wrong is wrong and you've been a big proponent of pointing out people using yours and others work without permission. Wrong is wrong, is it not?
Ok sorry not being a jerk here but that gave me a .
you hadn't even commented in this thread until now and she referenced a specific post by Island Dog(aka Spencer) but you still assumed she meant you?
Like i said I'm not being a jerk but after reading through all the other crap this amused me. Thanks.
It's been awhile since I've commented on this sort of thing but, here goes.
When I have made my master skin purchases, I did so largely on the reputation and style of the artist. Some I liked more than others, some I used more than others. Overall I liked making these purchases and plan on doing so again some time down the road.
The thing with peoples' comments and opinions is they are not absolute, they change and some people seem to thrive on stirring things up when expressing them. While it's no fun dealing with the negativity, eliminating it is impossible and if it were removed (by deleting destructive comments) that would only lessen the credibility of the site.
Let's face it Vamp you will likely see this sort of thing possibly here again and certainly from time to time in your daily activities. No sense then in taking it to heart.
I'm sure in the months ahead I'll be back to my favorite web site to do again the things I enjoyed doing here.
Later.
Comments such as this is subpar are just as valid as this is great. Just as there is no requirement to state why it is great, there is no obligation to state why it is subpar. It is just one persons opinion.
That being said, there is no place here for harrassment in the form of continuous attacks by an individual or group against any member. This is best handled by a request for help to an admin or mod if that happens.
Finally, it has long been established that rips are best handled via a PM to a mod suppling supporting links when possible. They are quick to respond and address such issues.
Seems pretty straight forward to me.
Just follow the bouncers rules in the movie Roadhouse. "Be nice, be nice, be nice. When it is time to not be nice, TAKE IT OUTSIDE."
Just a heads up for one and all...
WHAT MAKES A MASTER SKIN.
1. A site member is promoted to Master after demonstrating worthiness.
2. The Master subsequently makes a skin.
3. It is checked and accepted by Stardock for suitability.
4. Stardock sets it up as a commercial [Master] skin.
Now, does that mean YOU will like it? Maybe, maybe not. THAT is personal taste.
If you HAVE TRIED it and find you do not like it....say so. Better still....explain why. You may just prompt the skinner to do the next one more to your liking.
If you want to be an ass/arse about the whole situation then you will discover Wincustomize.com/Stardock has ass/arse - kickers for just such an occasion.
Good Lord! What is all the fuss about. I just read this entire thread and cannot believe that someone cannot take criticism concerning their work. I made a simple comment that I felt this was not Master quality and I will pass on buying it, and all hell breaks loose. I myself have had comments on my work over the eight years so far that I have been skinning that were downright rude, such as "This is a piece of shit!" or "How can you design such crap?", yet I don't rant and rave about it. I take it with a grain of salt so to speak. There are more important things in life.
Kitty, no offense was meant when I said your skin was not for me. I just personally do not consider it Master quality, my opinion. So please, take it "with a grain of salt" too, and lets end all this ridiculous discussion that could ruin the skinning community here at WC. My opinion is my opinion, it was not meant to cause WWIII like this.
Friends?
I don't usually adhere to Thumper's mother's advice of if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all because I have such a high regard for free speech, but a person's gallery entry -- that's kind of like their HOME to me, it's their space, and I just think it's bad protocol to make someone feel bad in their own space.
Yes k10w3, it is their HOME, but all skinners must be able to accept comments, good or bad, obnoxious, rude or otherwise. I know I have had to, but I don't let it bother me. I merely try to do better, and I certainly don't respond to the comment and start this type of thing. It is pointless and solves nothing.
k10w3 everyone has the right to their opinion regardless if who it is directed at likes it or not. And i agree 100% with lightstars comment about skinners having to be able to accept all comments no matter what they might be. If they can't then thats quite sad. A skinner should not have to put up with harrassment or deliberate nastiness but from what i have seen in the comments section of the master skin sabetour that is not the case. While some of the comments might not be all love and kisses they are not what i consider nasty or destructive.
One thing i forgot to add to my last comment in this thread is that when someone is going to release a master skin it is MY OPINION that said skins should include substyles for at least XP and Vista ( and now windows 7) to make them worth the price of purchase. Just because a skinner thinks that XP is "dead" doesn't mean that everyone has suddenly stopped using it. I am not sure of the numbers but i think i can safely say that over 60% of users are still on XP as their preffered O/S. Maybe now with windows 7 being so good that will change but it won't happen for a while and i think any master who does not include a substyle for XP in a master skin is doing the customizing community a great diservice. Like i said, this is just my opinion.
But I would venture a guess that the vast majority of those comments were made by non-skinners with no idea what they were talking about.
But getting a comment from a master quality skinner such as yourself that it's not a "Master" quality skin is far more hurtful than getting that comment from a non-skinner, and you should have just kept quiet.
And I read these forums a lot. I'm also sure it's rooted in the fact that you will probably never be a Master here.
you dont need to be a skinner to like some thing or not so if you get the latest ps3 game & say it is not that good am i wrong because i dont make games i have not even made a comment on the skin but when this is said it bugs me. i am a fan of kittys works any way
nimbin, the reason why i dont skin xp anymore is because it was giving me trouble on my old pc. I now have a new pc with vista and soon windows 7. I will consider reinstalling xp on my vista harddrive...but if it screws up my system like last time, i will take it off.
It's all just pixels in the end! If the net went down tomorrow it wouldn't mean squat.
Having said that...I think we should hunt down Vampy and make her smoke a whole pack of cigs and drink a whole case of coke...in an hour! Wait,,,,she'd like that! Oh well....it was a thought! Don't sweat it Vampy! I use XP anyway....you know...the bastard stepchild of OS's
With much respect for who you are and what you have accomplished and have done for others....
When did we stop supporting one another and just start bashing each others efforts? Without knowing or even pretending to know what 'may' be behind it all, it sure looks like hunting season has started a tad early on WC.
I just don't get the way some folks are behaving. It's venomous. If the issue is with Vampothika, take it up privately. If it is with STardock, take it up with them. But bashing her in her gallery/comments...no. JUst 'no'. Everyone here who has ever skinned and have had that happen knows how it hurts. You know how much you would like to remove the comment. To say 'It's happened to me and I moved on' is bull. You didn't like it then. You wouldn't like it if it happened tomorrow. You would want a peer, equal, or someone who's opinion may carry a great deal of weight to do it privately. If they feel they should do it publicly, it should be highly constructive AND supportive, especially if you are someone like a Master Apprtentice or Journeyman.
I saw a few of these coments as well. What if they don't run XP? IS a MAster required to run all three versions of WIndows? (What about folks still running 2000?) The day I got Vista, they announced Windows7. I could have cried. Let me say this, with respect to the plight of those on XP...
Learn to skin. Spend a couple months hovering over Photoshop and Skinstudio trying to position buttons and double checking each pixel on your corners. Spend hours on just the start menu and trying to get it to strtch just right. Spend days trying different colors, transparencies, and fonts. The fonts will drive you insane. Try to find the time in your real life to spend to just complete one skin and then you can bitch. You think going from XP to Vista to 7 is like changing the little rubberized skin on your new cell phone. It ain't. Not even close.
As for Brushes....I am not perfect. I have overlooked credits on at least two occassions and got taken to task on it. I got so caught up in the work, I left out one resource in a list of three or ten. It happens. I was not trying to pull anything off. I even felt so bad, I bought the one artist a subscription at DA. It just happens sometimes.
I haven't much to say about this thread, but the above statement bothers me....
Am I naive, or does this mean that "private messages" aren't private?
Seems that way huh? Damn....there goes my secret plans to take over the world! Oh well....back to "Married with children"...Al may have another plan I can use.
If one or other or both of the respondents to a [series of] PMs has sufficient issue with its/their content that they feel they must forward it/them to a site admin then that is their prerogative.
They [PMs] are certainly NOT observed by a third party....
I for one am now going to mention every brush used, i think this is something we have overlooked in gerneral as skinners.
(and basically i didnt think it had to be done, but now i know it does, ill be doing it)
i have such a huge list of brushes, i cant even count them, but if it takes me all day to hunt down the author and link it back i will... great post po.....btw!!
and yes bilbo...i would enjoy that......i normally smoke a pack an hour anyways.........
i do feel like a bit of an ass not even recognizing this sooner and giving credit to brushes, butttt its amended as from today.
I only noticed today po (as i looked in the wallpaper section) that you linked brushes, and i was like 'omg, i should have been doing this!!" im glad ive seen it.
I'll give ya Bilbo! What else you smokin?
