Using a transliteration website, http://stevemorse.org/russian/eng2rus.html?english=dunov&russian=%D4%E3%DD%DE%D2%2C+%D4%EE%DD%DE%D2 , and google translate, I have determined what seems to be the most likely meanings of the names of the TEC capital ships.
Akkan: аккан, which means "array".
Dunov: дюнов, which means "dune".
Marza: маржа, which means "margin".
Sova: зова, which means "summons".
Kol: кол, which means "count".
These are the translations based on transliteration which seemed most likely to me.
However, here are the other transliterations:
Akkan, Акан, Экан, Акэн, Экэн
Dunov, Дунов, Дюнов
Marza, Марза, Мэрза, Маржа, Мэржа, Марзэ, Мэрзэ, Маржэ, Мэржэ
Sova, Сова, Зова, Совэ, Зовэ
Kol, Кол... ok only one transliteration possible here.
But of course, this assumes the developers intended for the names of the TEC ships to have meaning in Russian. The words, especially Dunov, seem to have the appearance of having origins in a Slavic or Baltic language, but that is not to say that they do for certain.
Interesting. From what I have researched, I have found that Akkans were female spirits in Finnish mythology. Also, Marza is the name of a river in Romania. Also, cap ship and planet names sound slavic.
The Russians are an historically great people, and have the second most advanced space program in the world today. Some book or the other, I can't remember the author or the title (it's been at least a decade), but it's one of the famous older sci-fi ones, actually had the Russians dominating space and being the major power in the solar system . I want to say it was one of those 1960s or 70s sort of sci-fi books... I think by one of the greats.

Sova means 'Owl'
Kol means 'one'[school teacher slang...used to desctibe lowest mark - there are 5 total] or wooden stake[the one you make wooden wall out of]
and Dune pronounced in russian 'Duna'.
Usually google translate is off, no surprize. Perhaps JuleTron is correct about Akkan and Marza. The word Dunov sounds the most Slavic, though google's suggestion of "dune" does sound quite incongruous.

I always thought that ship names like Dunov and Krosov were named after people, for example their chief designers or something.
The word Marza is Romanian for "Mars" as in the god of war (very appropriate name isn't it?).
I've also found out that there was a group of tribes in southern India named the Kol and that Hoshiko is a Japanese name that means "star".
Maybe I'm wrong though.
