I am wondering if there is any advice on getting past a 4 SB chokepoint around a star. We like to play big maps (many stars and planets) with my friends and those are quite frequent.
I have never managed to get past several upgraded starbases... Can you offer advise on how o approach this situation? They just kill my fleet so fast... I like to play Advent mostly.
So far I have used bombers or just gone head to head with my fleet, including Rapture/Radiance/Progenitor but the battles have been pretty close even against 1 SB...
Thanks in advance
You need swarms of Bombers. As Advent, the Rapture's Concentration Aura will make them even stronger, and Bombers don't worry about SB attacks. Also, you could try building your own SBs there, though that might just create a no man's land.
You really shouldn't have any problems if the enemy fleet isn't there. A good fifty bombers is all you need to crack heavily upgraded starbases, but going head to head with them is an iffy proposition.
Against TEC and Advent starbases (especially late game) you should never get too close to them. Either barrage them from a distance with artillery cruisers or bombers (preferably bombers). There's no need to get too close to these immobile behemoths, especially given that both have uncapped area of effect abilities that can torch your entire fleet. If the enemy doesn't have backup (or enough backup) the starbase will die given enough time.
The Vasari starbases are a little more tricky, because they can actually move and follow you around. Still, your best course of action remains to pepper them with bombers while running your fleet away from them. The starbases will never catch up to your fleet, and eventually they will go down. You can actually attempt to go toe-to-toe with these (though not with more than one at a time, and certainly not without a very powerful fleet) because they lack uncapped area of effect abilities.
Now, the trouble becomes if the enemy has a fleet present to back up their starbase. Of course, this just makes the task more difficult, but doesn't change the approach: use bombers and avoid getting your ass kicked.
Thanks for the tips guys.
most of its been answered but if you encounter a star with four sb's and a enemy fleet. keep your fleet in the areas that the sb's cant cover with their canopy.. As said before engage the SB's with Bombers and make sure you have plenty of healer units and anti SC units as your SC will be tied up with the SB and your opponents will be on you like white on rice. Unless its Vasari SB's you can totally ignore the battle with the SB and your SC while you micro the battle between your fleets. If its Vasari...........well its going to be interesting outrunning Four SBs coming from different directions and the fleet...best way to deal with that is if you have an ally atleast then youd be able to split the work.
lol your screwed if they are vasari sb basically with a fleet of carriers
Not exactly; Vasari starbases lack any area of effect attacks, so it is possible for a late game fleet to actually go toe-to-toe with them (though I'd avoid fighting more than one at a time...). Certainly this is one of the most dangerous scenarios imaginable and you're probably better off trying to bypass them entirely.
Step 1: Scout ahead- Know what youre dealing with. Check out the star, then check out planets that are attached to it. Look for a good place to set up a base in their system.
Step 2: Plot a course- Use the info gathered from your scout mission to the star to plot a path around each starbase there to the best option for a base of operations planet attached to the star. Be sure and give yourself plenty of room to maneuver or go for a path that which would put you in the stars grav well for the least amount of time. If you can get to a planet by turning around and jumping once youve jumped in, thats the best option.
Step 3: Execute a bypass- Get your fleet together as close as you can get them before you jump to the star. Then follow your route, make adjustments if necessary to stay away from the SBs and jump to your target planet.
Step 4: Set up a base- Have your cap ships immediately start bombarding the planet. The quicker its destroyed the sooner you can set up. Clean up any static defenses, and colonize the planet. Start with building a bunch of repair bays to take care of the damage done to your ships. Don't wait until all the enemy structures are cleared, start building as soon as you can. The repair bays will give you an edge if theres an enemy fleet nearby trying to chase you down. Then build frigate factories and a starbase.
Voila, you've bypassed the chokepoint and now have a sturdy base in the enemy system. Your opponents have now spent the money for 4 starbases just to have you waltz right by. Your fleet took a little damage, but you have a way to heal them, and create more without having to go through that chokepoint again.
**** Note Be careful around TEC starbases, at high tech levels TEC can research a tech called "improved Jump Degradation" which will do a higher percentage of damage to ships attempting to bypass. If you know that your enemy is no where nearby, then you'll have enough time to repair, but you don;t want to run into an enemy fleet after taking that kind of damage.
Also theres a big possiblity that the planets directly linked to the star are entrenched with SBs as well so have your Bombers ready. Because eventually you will have to engage his starbases.
A group of the extreme-range starbase killers is also a good addition to a fleet if this sort of thing is common, esspecially if there are no enemy ships in the area. Send in these and anything with fighters first. Also, if you're filthy rich and the SBs are literally right where you exit phase space, drop a hornet's nest of scouts in about three seconds before your main fleet launches. You'll likely lose them all, but your core fleet should survive unscathed, or at the most with some shield damage. Again, assuming no guardian fleet covering the SBs.
