Just installed: everything seemed to install correctly. After a few moments on the title screen the game crashes.

Forwarded this info to Cari, good find.
You, good sir, are my hero. Removing familytreesubwnd.dxpack from C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Elemental\screens and C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic\Screens made me get past the title screen.
"Removing familytreesubwnd.dxpack from C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Elemental\screens and C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Elemental - War of Magic\Screens made me get past the title screen."
The game works like a charm after I tried this. Before I did it, the game always crashed at the intro screen.
Kryo, FYI I can confirm that deleting familytreesubwnd.dxpack does not fix the issue for at least one of us (just reported as bug 70304).
It's my alternate (ancient) laptop so I can still play fine on my primary, just fyi.
Now stuck on black screen after intro screen finishes...
error report etc... here https://forums.elementalgame.com/364036/#2377531
I have similar problem.
Fixed by removing the familytreesubwnd.dxpack file as suggested in this thread.
Eureka! Deleting all screens from both places then running Verify install from impluse software, then updating elemental via impulse, then deleting only familytreesubwnd.dxpack at both locations got me into the game!
Had a similar problem. Deleted the family... file from both locations and it would get past splash intro. But once in game could not access any research trees, as has been noted by posters above.
Found that after you boot up if you alt-tab out (while at the intial main menu) and add the family... file back to the Program File/...Elemental/screens folder that these trees will be able to be accessed while in game.
Hope this helps.
Deleting that file works great for me. Thanks for finding it.
Sadly, it doesn't work in my case: it seems that the TitleWnd.dxpack file causes the crash for me
If I remove all files in the Movies directory and keep all files in the screens directory, I am able to see the menu but it crashes whenever I click on anything
Deleting those two files also worked for me, meaning I was unable to get past title screen and into a game, now I can. However, once in the game, not sure things are right. Seem to be missing functionality that others have described (but I have not experienced obviously).
Clearly, however, this seems to be a great step forward in identifying issue.
Family Tree seems to cause my initial ctd, but TitleWnd seems to also be doing it. of coarse, when I remove titlewnd as well all I get is a black screen and my quill pen mouse pointer...
Deleting the FamilyTree files is definitely only a partial fix. I'm getting pretty inconsitent functionality across sessions and cannot access any menus in the game, so I can't try a re-start and load to see if it gets me back or finally into a more functional state.
The oddest variations are in whether or not I can even attack a wandering monster (sometimes I just end up sharing a square), whether I can build a town, and whether I can train troops in a town. (I also had one very odd moment where my sovereign moved to the edge of someone else's influence and got locked in place. Could muck with towns a bit, but no amount of futzing and ending turns got that sovereign moving again.)
This is the same for me. I can also only exit the game by Crtl-Alt-Delete.
Well, just a bit ago, ESC started working for me after being hit many, many times in many different sessions and doing nothing. Hopefully it will stay working, because at the moment I can save and load as well as exit normally, which is nice. If only the Kingdom menu would start working...
Ditto. I can only build a town once, and have not been able to train troops or attack yet.
If you restore the files when you get to the menu it restores access to the screens and the few features available.
I have had the exact same issues. The getting stuck at the edge of someones influence was particularly weird.
The frakkety-frak, you say! Research! I've got research going!
(I think someone else, or maybe even you, tried to get this across earlier in some thread or on IRC, but Reply 68 was the first time that I properly grokked Step 2 of the FamilyTree workaround thing.)
Deleting family tree works for me too. !!!!
Quick question: How many people have DesktopX installed? When I look at the file and double-click it, in explorer, it launches as a DesktopX desktop gadget.
Could there be any interaction?????
Deleting family tree doesn't work for me. I still haven't gotten past the title screen & haven't seen *any* of Elemental.
Same here. I can remove all files and get past the intro, but just to a black screen. But just removing the family tree files doesn't help.
I had the same 'title screen crash' problem. Deleting the family tree file fixed this. Thanks!
