New to the Metaverse here, so I have a few questions! The most important is... What is an empire? How do I join one? How do individuals affect an empire? I have not found an interest in maximizing my scores for my games; only in mastering different strategies and generally having fun in different scenarios. None the less I'd like to join the Metaverse! I guess that's all I was wondering really...

Empires arer like Multiplayer goups that you join, excpet it's not multiplayer. Now if you looking for an empire to join, then come join the Geckodon Alliance, we're looking for new wariors to aid us as we conquer the galaxy.
An empire is a group of players. To join, go to the MetaVerse and select an empire to join. There are multiple ways to affect an empire. Points, your game points are added to the collective. Knowledge, share your experience with other members. Finally and IMHO the most significant, people you enjoy spending some time with.
Ignorance, except for the less inquisitive, is always temporary.

There are only two choices....predator or prey. The Kzinti are the dominant predators of this galaxy and have an insatiable need for conquest! If you have the heart of a Hero, then you are welcome to fight alongside our ferocious t'kzintar. If not we look forward to meeting you in battle, and should you fight bravely, when you are defeated you will be honored by being devoured by our warriors. Fight without honor, and your bones will be left to bleach in the hot sun, squabbled over by carrion-eaters.

What Jacklv says is wise and true, and I couldn't put in any other way. There are many wise and skillful players but they are not all in one Empire, they are in many different Empires. You should check out each empire.
Here is a list of the top ten active Empires, being at the top like Kzinti (Chaos) gives you a First Place Empire Medal, then there is Tyranny Of Evil (Chaos) which would give you a Second Place Empire Medal. Third , Fourth and Fifth places are dead. Then there is my Empire Adepta Sororitas (Order) which is in Sixth, you should read about, click on the red link below to take you to my empire. The Twilight Pub (A Neutral place) is close at our heels in Seventh place. And in Eighth place is the Gerontocracy (Order). Ninth and Tenth places are dead. I would not want anybody to join a dying or dead one but I would join one that is in the top ten. You know you can do whatever you want to do because you have a choice.

Apparently a lot of people did because otherwise they wouldn't be so far ahead of anyone else by now. It's true. It's an extremely easy way to get a shiny #1 medal - for the achievement of clicking "join empire". But so what? Take the shinies and run. =P
I created my very own empire because I wanted a pretty empire logo. It's not even a top 10 empire or anything like that. It has a pretty logo. That was the only requirement. =P
(Sorry, kitties. Yours is a painting, not a shiny badge or logo. Might be perfectly natural to the feline mind, though!)

If it was anything else but the Kzinti I would make my own (we Theraphosidae are solitary by nature)... but IT IS LARRY NIVEN'S KZINTI! and that is just awesome... and no one wants to be dinner for them if you can eat alongside em! and I hit join without knowing about medals. I was wondering what that #1 thing was about in my profile... Now my people have allies that understand what it is like to sink your fangs into the conquered!

@ Dominatus101, Kzinti are excellent warriors, they show no mercy. I hope you had the time to read about my Empire Adepta Soroitas because you find out we are like holy water to vampires that is why we are sometimes called Witch Hunters so do think about when you are about to sink your fangs into the Order of Adepta Soroitas. Are most holiest Saints can make Choas burst into a Holy Flame as seen in the picture in my empire thread.
