Greetings!
The Penny Arcade Expo is the best game related trade show I go to each year. The reason I say that is that as a gamer, I really like hanging out with other gamers to see what they think of things.
Beatles: Rock Band looks like it’s going to be crazy popular. I am probably one of the few people who haven’t gotten into Guitar Hero or Rock Band but this might make me take the plunge.
I got to play some Diablo 3 at the show and was just blown away at the continued dominance of Blizzard in terms of crafting games to perfection.
Starcraft 2 was another game people could sit down and play. This is a game that is going to own the RTS genre for some time I think as again, Blizzard demonstrates why it’s the world’s greatest game developer at PAX.
At the risk of being biased, I think Elemental was one of the more talked about games of the show too based on Twitter traffic from PAX. Stardock’s upcoming fantasy strategy game isn’t due out until next year but was playable at the show. Stardock also showed off some Sins of a Solar Empire: Diplomacy at the show as well.
Dragon Age: Origins had a super cool booth with a huge dragon. My gripe with this, however, was that it was shown behind closed doors.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a good screenshot of Star Trek Online so I put up one I took from their booth. It looks extremely fun.
Another thing that was surprisingly popular at the show was Ready to Play. It’s a new program set to go out into beta this week that lets people quickly find other people of like mind to play a given game. Someone described it as real-time eHarmony for gamers.
Pirates of the Burning Sea had one of the coolest booths. They assembled their own pirate ship. Arrrgh!
Even Tru Blood was there!
Coming home is so hard (a view from the plane)
Glad to see you agree that Blizzard is the world's greatest game developer
Yeah, now if they would just release a game. Lol I know it takes time. I'm just so psyched about SC2!!! Nice review here.
I think that was me... 6 months ago. Around the release of demigod I am pretty sure I buildt off your idea of player matching and came up with a slider system that has a striking similarity to what you are using. Hell, from the demo video online, my 3 sliders made it inot you program with minor tweaks. I know great minds think a like, but you can thank me later.
Elemental and Diablo 3...you make me so jealous. I still remember the days of looking at my clock and seeing 8 p.m. and then I would go kill mephisto, diablo and baal over and over just to get those sweet items. I would look back at the clock and see that it was now 8 a.m. .
Don't have any memories about Elemental yet, but I'm pretty damn sure I will by January 10'.
Did you try the True Blood sample? Weird!
What about Demigod?
I tried the Tru Blood sample It's just orange soda, basically. It reminded me of some Shasta flavor I used to drink when I was a kid. It's not bad, but definitely not worth the premium price
lol.
Wished I could have said hi. But you were super busy and popping around all over the place. Still got to meet a lot of stardock people. Lots of fun.
No pictures of annatar!?!?!? And looks like Ready to Play is a good IM system to replace steam... :3
I assume it has IM, thats what it looks like to me. Can I download it on impulse when the beta starts under tools or something?
I might still be in some of Dae's videos. Ready to play is more than just IM stuff, it will find people for you to play with based on your profile, so it's more of a matchmaker. And it's not exclusive to Stardock or games on Impulse, you can use it for any game.
Frogboy. PAX Boston? Please say yes.
It's technically PAX East, but yeah if Stardock went I'd totally go. It's only a 45 minute/hour drive away from my house :3
When is PAX East anyways?
And Annatar - I mention the IM thing because I can't wait to replace steam. Sadly I'll probably still use it because I have to, but whatever. Options are good
Cool post. All my fav future games in one post - minue the music game and PotBS. Life looks like it will be good soon. Now about free time to enjoy the pleasures of digital life...
On a side note, the way I see it in a few years SD will be able to host its own StarCon!
what about starwars the old republic?!! or is that star treks nemesis?
SW:TOR wasn't playable and it wasn't on the show floor. It was shown off in a theater twice, but the lines were so long I didn't stand in them.
On another note, I highly encourage everyone to go to the next PAX. Stardock's going to be there and they're all great fun to hang out with (except maybe Yarlen, but that's 'cause he's just drunk all the time). Ironclad will also be there and Blair is a great also (he was only there for one day though )
The 3-day PAX pass is only $50 and the rest is just plane and hotel, which really aren't that bad at this day and age. It's well worth the trip.
I live at Boston. I was definitely going anyways. Stardock and Ironclad is just a huge plus if you're right about them being there at PAX East.
$$$ is a problem
Aside from Elemental and possibly Sins Diplomacy, the only game there that really interests me is Star Trek Online. For all that I remain opposed to MMORPG's (for various reasons), I remain intrigued by STO in spite of myself.
Gah!! You named the Movie That Must Not Be Named! Now you shall be cursed forever!
oh no. im cursed. yawn.
I don't get what all the Nemesis hate is about. It was miles upon miles better than Insurrection, which was an absolute snoozefest.
ah , PAX this year looked awesome, wish I could have gone...
Insurrection was twice the Star Trek movie that Nemesis was. But nemesis was an action movie.
And Martok... STO looks and plays just like an MMO. Which is why I'm afraid to say I won't be playing it at all. Even in instanced areas the combat is ridiculous to watch. A klingon with a batleth taking a swing every 10-15 seconds against someone with a phaser set on kill... ugh.
Anyways, it didn't feel like startrek because there was only combat shown... so who knows, I guarantee they left out Archaeology and Diplomacy.
Yay Diablo III and Starcraft II shown. I love the Star Trek dude, and besides, I love MMO
Insurrection was certainly no home run, but it looks like an Oscar-winner compared to its craptastic successor. The writing & directing for Nemesis was absolutely atrocious, and had plot holes you could fly an entire armada of starships through -- even more so than most Trek films. (Not even the lamentable Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was as horrible, as at least it had the whole "so bad/campy it's good" vibe going for it.) This site covers quite thoroughly (albeit in a tongue-in-cheek manner) all the things that were wrong with Nemesis, and why it's so reviled & despised by such a huge portion of the fanbase.
Thanks for your input, daedalao; it's greatly appreciated. I'm still only mildly interested in STO as it is, so it's good to hear perspectives like yours so that I don't become unnecessarily excited and/or unduly optimistic.
