Here in Australia it's the 1st of September and Fences this morning popped up a dialogue box which reads...
"As noted during download, this community preview beta of Fences was set to expire on November 1st, 2009. Please visit http://labs.stardock.com/Fences to obtain the latest version.
Thankyou for participating in the Fences beta!
(Fences will now run in reduced functionality until updated or uninstalled)"
Why does this happen on SEPTEMBER 1, and not on NOVEMBER 1? An earlier version which was to expire on August 31 was installed, but I installed the current one (which "expires on November 1") on top of it a week ago.
There is no later version at that link.
The version is "0.98.1970BETA"
The update button does nothing, Fences says it's up to date.
And I have a 0.99 beta (8/31/2009) update sitting in Impulse, but the update pauses before even starting.
Never mind.... it just resumed after having restarted Impulse.
I did'nt know an update was available until I read this post. Just updated (via Impulse) to v0.99.2030 Beta, set to expire Nov 1st, 2009. Interesting to see what will happen on the stroke of midnight! It's 11.22pm here now.
And am now, after rebooting, experiencing the same as Karlston (12.28am local time)......
Received the expiry notification at midnight, quothing Nov 1st, and informing me Fences would now run with reduced functionality. I rebooted, and, as far as I can make out, Fences is still running normally, with no reduction in it's features.
0.96 was set to expire on Sept 1st.
0.98 is set to expire on Nov. 1st.
0.99 (released today) will last until 1.0 release.
when will 0.99 be available for download on the website?
Is this availible without installing Impulse? Not that I dislike Impulse, I'm just unable to install it on my company system.
Beta 0.98 expired prematurely today on my system as well. My guess is that the expiration check expects to get the system date in US date format. Australia (where the original poster is located) uses the DD.MM.YYYY date format, as does Germany (where I am). Maybe the expiration check thinks today is the ninth of January (and disregards the year part)...
More likely that the developer(s) missed at least one place in the code where the expiry date is used.
They got the one for the dialogue box, but missed the more important one, the one that's compared to the current date for the purposes of checking expiry.
Speculation only of course, and (as a coder for 20+ years) I confess to having been guilty too of such errors.
Yeah woke up this morning and mine expired. The update has been installed but still get a warning message.
I wouldn't even mind if i could buy a release version - I hate to upset anyone but i think Fences is one of the best applications released by Stardock for ages. Its brilliantly simple, and has functionality I've been after ever since dropping WfW 3.11 (*goes misty eyed*)
FYI: Upgrading to v0.99.2030 via Impulse didn't solve the problem. This newer version still thinks its time is over
I agree that this could be also because of not getting all the date checking locations in the code right, but then this (duplicate code for the same purpose) sounds like 'pre-function' coding - and I didn't want to imply such a bad/outdated coding style...
So, what's the solution (sorry to want to get to the bottom line) ?
I'm having the same problem. I re-installed and have lost all my fences and even thet didn't help
I am getting the same expiry error. I am in the US (EST). Version 0.98.1970
Betas. Can't trust them.
Looking into what went wrong now. Fences should continue to function though.
Hello, i got the warning as well, US version... but mine does not function normally after clicking through the warning.
If i try to move a file into a fence, it fails... it just jumps to the windows desktop (not into a fence).
Just thought i'd share...
The other functions seem to work fine...
I have the same problem as wingnut74: after the warning and the update, if I move a file into a fence, it jumps to the desktop where there's not a fence. My "real" fences are still in place, though.
I live in Italy and my version is 0.98.
In the US here, still not clearing up that whole Nov 1 bug. I'll try forcing everything to be uninstalled / deleted regarding fences and see what I come up with.
Hi!
I have the same problem. After uninstalling 0.97 and installing 0.98 today I got the already mentioned message. Now, that I have it replaced with 0.99, this message still appears. But beside of that annoying message when Windows starts up Fences still seems to work properly for me.
What is it with that whole expiration stuff anyway?
Windows XP Professional SP3, 32 Bit
Bug identified and resolution pending. It should not effect the application itself though.

Just uninstalled v0.98... cleared files from "program files" and cleared registry entries.
Installed v0.99.2030 BETA, and still getting the "expire on November 1st 2009" message box when I open "Edit Fences".
Oh, and while I'm posting...
It would be a nice feature if, when you have "Quick Hide" enabled (icons or hidden) and you select "New" <item> from right clicking the desktop... that the item you create automatically is set to "Exclude from hide".
I'll go over what I've tried so far on my end.

Uninstall with windows files manually removed. Reinstalled impulse, reinstalled fences. Confirmed running latest version and still get the error message.
