My friends and I are pissed because no matter what game name we come up with (good players, pro game, premade - you name it), we end up playing against noobs who obviously either can't read, or think just because the beat the AI in single player mode doesn't make them noobs anymore.
So this is my attempt to try to explain to newer players how to read the game names and to understand what it means. For most forum readers this will be pretty obvious, but apparenttly it's not obvious enough for another huge number of players.
What is a noob in DG ? Well of course, I don't claim to have the perfect definition. But I'd say that if you fill one of the following criterias you would be consireded as a noob by most more experienced players.
- If you just bought the game
- If you have played less than 10-15 Internet games
- If you want to try out a new DG
- If you played several games with the same DG but don't have a clear idea of how to play it
- If youre uneasy with chatting during a game
- If your Win percentage is somewhere under 35% (in addition, I'd strongly suggest you to take a look at the Strategy section of this forum to learn more about what you're doing wrong)
List of most game names
- "Noobs" or "Noobs Welcome" : This indicates that the game is suited for a noob. In here, Sedna's summon Yetis, Queen of Thorns don't pick Bramble shield, Oaks just stand still and hit you with Autoattack, Regulus don't fall back under 50% health and UB's follow they prey deep into the enemy base (when I say deep I mean the first 2 towers usually).
- "No noobs" : this is more tricky, as it can range from mediocre players to good players. In here, people will have understood the DG golden rule (don't fucking die), and use basic chat commands like "help" and "oom" (link to TheGuildfordStrangler's Teamplay guide). In here, players will yell at you if you die 3 times before hitting level 5.
- "Good players" : This clearly indicates a higher level of skill. Players in here will likely know each other and have devellopped complementary tactics (like stun, stun, stun for UB and Ereb). Players in these games will understand how to read a tactical situation, wether or not to stay when engaged 1v2, use TP scrolls to come from behind and use potions just after you used your stunning ability. There's also a good chance that some players will be using some kind of voice chat.
- "Pro game" or "Pros" : Usually games aimed at the top 100 of DG players. Expect them to know EVERYTHING about their demigod, your demigod, and all the other Demigods. And maybe even your favourite color or ice cream flavour. These guys will use specific DG on specific maps with specific builds just because they know how to optimize everything. Expect these guys to make almost no mistake.
- "Premade" or "Teams welcome" : This indicates the players hosting the game know each other, play together probably everyday, and most likely spend time together on voice chat from morning till evening. Skill level may vary, but expect players to be somwhere between "Good players" and "Pros".
So please, next time you're in the main lobby, take a second and read the game descriptions carefuly.
And if there's no game matching your abilities, for christ's sake just don't join the next open game just because there's a slot left or because you like the map. It's not fun for you, it's not fun for us bashing noobs, it's just a waste of time for both of us. Even worse, if you're with 2 or 3 people who actually know how to play, you'll just ruin their game.
It's ok to be new, it's ok to learn, it's ok to try out new stuff. Host your own game, people will join eventually. Just don't lose patience after 1 min because nobody joined. Eventually, all the games fill up.
I understand where your coming from Ezze, and I wish it could work out where everyone in each game were on equal levels of skill so the game was interesting and competitive. But in reality, this won't always happen. We have to remember, Demigod is just a video game, not a way of life.
People play for different reasons, but I'd say the majoirty play for entertainment and a break from reality. These same people usually dont have much time, so if a no noobs or pro game is the only thing open at that time of day, they will join regardless of their skill level.
I could only suggest that once Stardock fixes the stat issue, let the Pro players (top 100 or whutever) create special ranked games that only allow other top tier players join. Or add a guild war feature that has in-game guild support and only allows the guilds at war to enter the match...mmo style. Other than that, theres nothing you can do man other than request some premades or guild vs guild games via the forums. Remember Demigod is just a video-game....but a hellava good one .
Yeah I guess you're right and the clan options will ease that out. But I play during EU time, and honestly I always see tons of games in the main lobby.
I totally agree, it's just a game and personnally I'm not interrested in my ranking. But I have a family and a full time job, so if I can avoid to waste my precious game time in boring games, I'l give it a shot on the forums.
Not expecting miracles here, just want people to ask themselves wether or not they should, for their own fun, wait 5 mins more to find a game better suited for their playstyle.
It's all about having fun !
I think most of the people who don't heed game titles don't visit the forum, and there seems to be so many of them .
I've had a guy join an "experienced players only" lobby I was in, and he fed about 6 kills then ragequit. After the match I see him hosting a "new players" game!
I like to mention something else also.
I usually hosted Singapore Game or Asian game and i have people joning my game with pings more than 350 from Europe or US. Worse is that they stay in these games refusing to move unless i kick them. Even better the bastards rejoin the game. Usually we like to have good pings in our game so you will ruin it by being in our game.
PS. For those who DONT know what is Singapore, its a small country in South East Asia.
Hey Illegal ! I'm afraid you're right. At least your player learned the lesson !
You should write a guide on how to make friends on forums with sentences like that
And a few random tips--
"No noobs" lobbies fill up quicker than almost anything, and
"New players" lobbies fill up faster than those.
Names like "SUPER AWESOME GAME OMG" take forever get enough players to start.
I'm willing to bet Demigod suffers from DotA syndrome in that 'noobs only' games get filled with whatever experienced assholes can fill them up first.
signed.
i´m always wondering why players with 11 games and 3 wins join my games with titles as "advanced", "experienced" or "pro".
usually i check their stats and than ask them if they are sure to be in the right game... most of the time they think they are, even if i tell them their stats look like a noob!
so i let them join the other team., cause i dont want them to make me loose. after bashing them i´m asking in ingame chat if they still feel to have joined the right game. well, no answer than...
i just dont know what goes through their minds?!
agreed
If only this is more visible to the masses.
The title of your game should be a clear indication of what your doing - however more often than not, it's completely ignored and at the very worst abused.
Stating your game is for Australian players only, for example, will still see plently of European and American players join briefly, pause to complain and tell us all to "...get better fuckin' connections before playing online", because their ping to us is over 400, before quitting. I'm not trying to be rude, but putting Australian Players Only in the title for latency reasons. Worse still, advertising your game is for new players attracts the people who like to never lose - and so play lower skilled people to ensure victory (assuming the host themselves aren't this person setting up a Honey Pot game). Most titles for custom games in other RTS Games used to be formatted:[AU] 3v3 - All Welcome[USA EC] 4v4 - Comp Stomp[RU] 2v2 - New Players[EU] 3v3 - Pre-madeNow, you'll be lucky if the description even matches the type of game being played. The amount of "USA EAST - NO NUBS - 120< KICK N00BS" style titles I see makes me fear for the future of the internet.
maxxy's dictionary of game names:
No noobs = Noob only game.
Noobs only/New players = Pro player honeypot for steamrolling noobs who are trying to learn the game. Buyer beware.
No retards = I don't know what "retards" mean so this game is probably for me!
Pro only = Premade pro player groups using VoIP who won't state that they're premade and will lie about it.
Premade/Teams only = Games that have 1% chance of ever filling up.
Any game without a country tag = USA iz da center of da universe, brah? foshizzle.
Game with EU tag = South Africans join here.
<100 ms ping KICK! = Game host too retarded to understand DA INTERWEBZ. Ask Frogboy, he will explain.
Free Candy/Come bash us/Have fun = We are a premade pro player group over VoIP who want to rape noob players without the decency of using lube.
/joke
Thanks Ezze, every dg player should be forced to read this guide before playing a single game.
Also, people tend to overestimate themselves (yes, even you 'pro's'). So they play noob games, win 3 in a row and must think "Hey, that was pretty easy, I'm a pro!" and they'll go on to join pro games. There's a long way between noob and pro. I do however get sick and tired of the so called pro's that think their opinion is more important than that of others.
You missed one that I saw last night -
"No Douchebags" - My team will hurl racial insults at your team the entire game
That would be an oximoron because games with that description most likely contain a douchebag host
I wished they would add UI elements to the lobby that gave a player's ranking, win loss record, win percentage, or something that provided an indication of your opponent's skill. Hell, just a link to their Pantheon stats would be nice.
I see this so many times in main lobby. Can someone PLEASE explain me, why host want to kick players BELOW 100 ms ping ? I'm probably too stupid to understand that. Some time ago I joined this kind of game, but i got like 80 ms to host, so i wrote "ops, sorry i got <100 ms ping to you", and left.
your definition of noob game made me laugh
...
"Pro game" or "Pros" : Usually games aimed at the top 100 of DG players. Expect them to know EVERYTHING about their demigod, your demigod, and all the other Demigods. You should probably stick to noob games until you learn that good players determine their skill/item build real time based on the needs of the game at hand and that all of the above "noob" actions can be situationally viable.
And this is why we desperately need a matchmaking system like in warcraft3.
So many times my partner and I have created a Team game titled "2v2 Teams Only" only to have some random noobs join and ask "Why are we not doing 3v3?"
We have also found that you really have to be more specific then just Teams only, as we have stomped a few "noob" teams.
I wasn't trying to give an exhausive list of things, that being nearly impossible. I was just trying to give a broad idea of what to expect in specific types of games. And regarding the second part of your flame, which made laugh really long, well I guess I should return that tip to you. I viable Yeti Sedna ?
Please if you have any flaming / trolling urges, go on some other thread. Don't try and give any advices based on your ridiculous stats. It's just sad and not even worth making fun of you. I mean 1 game played to this date ? You don't have enough experience to explain me what builds are viable or not in hi skill games. So please, just remain silent.
You know, you can look up anyone's stats on pantheon. If someone joins your game with a skill level above or below what you want, just explain this to them and kick them.
Not all of us can click outside the Demigod window in lobbies without crashing.
