Valve and EA have announced Left 4 Dead 2. Game will have 5 new campaigns, 4 new characters and Ai Director 2.0.

Nice, I hope you can have up to 8 people playing the game now. 8 vs 8 vs mode would be awesome but they had better add at least 5 new boss infected. Also, Louis for the win.
And here is the first teaser.

Well that sucks, they are making us pay for content... I thought they were just gonna release more content for the current game.
Because that is certainly how a business works. Although I do admit it seems a bit quick for an expansion. I sure hope it turns out good though -- the trailer looked nice!
I run a Left 4 Dead server, and this just makes me very angry and very sad. If it is at 20 bucks I might get it, but anything above that I just refuse. To think of all the bugs at the beginning of the game, and the slow release time of content, much less the time waiting for the SDK.
Left 4 Dead 2 will come out at around a year from the release of the first one. That is ridiculous.
Agreed. All L4D community wanted was new maps / guns. EASY to make ...
And they do that but shove L4D2 at us and want us to pay again ... Thanks valve! Def won't be buying that game!
I kinda get what you guys are saying but I've got more than my moneys worth out of Left 4 Dead, best money I ever spent I think in terms of hours played and enjoyment to playing time ratio so it's first day purchase for me however
They really need to solve rage quiting, can't remember the last time I completed a campaign in versus. They need to make it so you can join a queue with 4 people and be matched against 4 people for a start, so at least the only way to play with friends isn't just to pick on poor randoms.
An article about what Valve intended to do with Left 4 Dead, written prior to the game's release:

Basically what I take from this is that Valve took all the updates they were going to do for Left 4 Dead (like they do for TF2), put them in a new package, and called it a sequel so they could charge for it.
Maybe it cost them a lot more than they expected? They aren't a charity, they do need to make money.
Just look at it this way, they are still updating TF2 and Counter Strike at no profit so it's not like they charge for DLC just to rinse people.
Kinda not too keen on L4D2. I love L4D and play it nearly daily however this is expansion material. I wouldn't mind shelling $20-$30 for this content but pushing it for full retail price is a bit too much. And Valve should know better, the L4D community didn't really kick off until they started offering the game at half-off ($25) on Steam.
But, even money aside, I'm still dubious about this expansion. The music is corny, the setting is meh (special infected wearing over-alls?), the only character of the new cast I sorta like is the mechanic kid. The original cast is much more charismatic and it has nothing to do with race (I play Louis almost exclusively). They just don't seem very interesting.
One of the things I like about L4D is that it still fits (though very loosely) within the realm of possibility. The zombies are not magical zombies but more like humans infected with a deadly strain of rabies. The guns you use, the way you fight, how you conserve resource "feels" as real as a game can make it feel. Now they are introducing fire ammo, chainsaws and axes and all this other nonsense, pushing the game away from horror shooter and more towards arcade shooter. And now that we get effective melee weapons, the need to conserve ammo is drastically reduced. I don't like any of this one bit.
However, there are rumors that Valve is thinking of including the original L4D in L4D2 for Xbox owners so that they don't have to swap discs in the event they want to play the original levels. If this is the case, then the PC version might truly be an add-on to L4D1. If that is the case and I can use members of the old cast in the new levels then I will be somewhat content.
My other worry is that the playerbase will fragment heavily between those that stick with L4D1 and those that buy L4D2 if L4D2 is a standalone game instead of an expansion. As an expansion, they could make it that L4D1 players can play with L4D2 players so long as they are playing L4D1 maps, modes and characters. As a standalone game, the playerbase will be divided.
I remeber the good old days when games as simple as left for dead were free, they were called MODS. Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Red Orchestra, Natural Selection, The Specialists, Science and Industry... now they are having us pay for essentailly more content to a game they made already, I really expected more out of TurtleRock, they made counter-strike which had content comming out for YEARS after it's release. I do not intend to buy unless it is like $10 for people who already own L4D 1.
Lol, LFD isn't even 1 year old and we are talking about LFD 2...
It must be a joke. A very big one.
From what I understand, with the stuff being implemented soon we will be able to play any maps, including custom (and probably any released with L4D2). That is of course assuming multiplayer will be compatible between the two, which may or (likely) may not be the case.
From the Devs: So how can other people play the maps you create? Don't worry, we are updating matchmaking to fully support the new maps.Source: http://www.l4d.com/blog/post.php?id=2510
That was posted about 2 weeks ago, and stated it would be updated in a 'few weeks,' so sometime this month probably.
PS: has anyone played with the map editor yet? I am experimenting with it now, and with help from the wiki it isn't to bad at all! I am building a model of my house so I can fight off zombie hordes from the comfort of my own room
