Ok, y'know, Assassins are pretty easy to play, and that is probably why I have no problem playing any of them.
Generals on the other hand, I just have never seem to have been able to get the hang of. I have seen games where Oak and Erebus are just unstoppable... but how? My General is always squishy like little worm.
What is the main focus on a General to keep them alive? Max HP, Regen, Armor? Erebus and Oak, are there any setups in particular that work really well for them?
Don't fight assasins till lvl 5+. you are squishy till you are god mode. I'll use Oak since I use him most. Early you can't fight ANY assasin and expect to win(even player matchup). I get early mana+ items so I can stay in a fight. Buy lots of HP pots so I can outlvl my opponents. Once around lvl 7-8 I have a shield that removes all debuffs, pentance a 4-600 dmg nuke. And minions If I decided to buy priests this game. At this point generals are about even with assasins. Later on I match assasins as far as items go but I start getting minions from my trees, but range and melee idols. And start dominating the assasins.
Theres no real WAY to play generals but they are squishy by themselves. Play with team outlevel opponents and make sure you don't feed. Any build will be great at lvl 20.
buy items for them, they are pretty much as good as assassins in a battle
idk wut else to say, though im one to speak since i mostly play ub
i play sedna and i dfdont agree with the first dudes post for sedna there is pretty much anyway to go but u got to get heal withing the first 2 lvls or ur fucked
for oak i have found shield helps when fighting if u have to at low lvl
for erebus i suck so that is him gone
for qot shield helps and is a low cast and re cast so u can stay alive earily game pretty easily
Ugh, played Erebus again tonight and got whooped badly... oh so badly... probably my worst game yet with 0 kills and 6 deaths. Umm, 4k HP and he died in like 2 hits...
There has to be some secret or some setup, cause I have seen him rock in games. Everytime I play him I just end up dying and dying and dying again. I hit for like 150 damage and get hit for like 1,000... he just seems to suck up to much mana to be strong with DPS... but I can't seem to improve his attack speed much or damage any. ;-/
yeah apart from 90% of games finishing at around lvl 15
ddd
your wrong it is between 10 and 15 that 90% finish
true
Just played Oak... got whooped with him as well. So I tried taking out the Queen with Oak, and couldn't scratch her... yet in my game, Oak seemed to have constantly taken out my shield in 1 blast with his nuke... so hmm... I can't blast the shield in one shot when I play Oak but when I play the Queen my shield drops instantly...

If you're having trouble staying around in the early levels, I have found that buying your priest idol at the start is a huge help. They are hard to kill the first few levels and give you lots of staying power, not to mention helping out your teammates. This is especially true for a general like oak who really needs a little help early on.
Oaks nuke does 200,400,600, and 800 respectivly. So judge that on how fast its taking down a shield. No way to buff it except through another oaks debuff or something like it causeing you to take extra dmg. I agree early on gets priests/monks, and a few mana pots. Oak has WAY to little MP at the start to do anything usefull. Less then 2 consecutive shots with pentance low MP. SO cheap mana pots are your friends.
erebus tips:
1 - Get hit twice then bite (or get hit once if it's a nuke then bite) you should be cooled off and ready for another bite when the fight is near its end
2 - Don't engage near towers, don't take on multiple DG's at once
3 - max out bite, max out swarm size, max out bat swarm, max out regen
4 - Buy vlemish face mask as soon as you can, then boots of speed, then the life gain armour, then some gloves
5 - If you're not winning a battle, run, bat swarm if you need it, bite a minion if you're really low on hp.
6 - Don't bat swarm into a fresh fight, use it to get away or to kill lots of creeps quickly, also use it to catch fleeing DG's but ONLY if your bite will finish them off, otherwise you'll probably die.
7 - If you don't have a full swarm of rolly pollies run from fights and kill some creeps, they increase your DPS quite a lot, as do melee minions.
He's made of paper, so getting number 5 right is really hard. Most fresh battles you'll have to run from. Try to get into fights with DG's after they've blown some/most of their mana on minions, try getting into short fights, running a bit, pop a potion or eat an enemy creep/minion with bite, then get back into the fight
I forgot to mention... memorize the numbers... If you're got a bite that does 500 damage, and the enemy has 700 hit points, don't use it. Wait till they are under 500 then insta kill. That's his big draw card
Strangely enough, I'm of the opinion that it's easier to stay alive as Generals. QoT has the shield and Mulch and is therefore almost impossible to kill. Sedna has Heal and auras and stuff that make her almost impossible to kill. Oak has shield and recovers health by killing stuff which makes him damn hard to kill. Erebus has bite and bat swarm and mist which make him completely impossible to kill.
You just need to be somewhat careful and be ready to retreat when needed - going toe to toe against UB is probably not a good idea.
get the idol for healing minions, use it, then sell it, buy more healing/mana potions. you cant go wrong, no matter what general u play u should be able to survive.
at lvl 1 i would also get an ability which can help you live longer aswell:
sedna: heal
oak,QoT: shield(doesnt matter if you dont lvl it further than 1)
Vamp: Bite
after that, it just comes down to how good you are at the game.
I totally agree with you. Assassins have very little in the way of defensive abilities. I find they're much harder to keep alive than generals.
Sedna and QoT have it easy when it comes to survivability. Heal and brambles make them virtually unkillable if they're played well. Definitely the two hardest DG's in the game to kill. Erebus is awesome with a combination of fast move speed, life steal, big armies of minions, and a teleport. His mist form is highly underrated, as it essentially makes him impervious to attack, allowing you to evade abilities like hammer slam or snipe. Oak has shield, which if used sparingly can get him out of almost any tough situation intact. If you waste it and then need it during its long cooldown, you're out of luck unfortunately.
Tip for al lgenerals: buy bishops early, then use the O button to place them on follow.
They will constantly pop heals on your general when ever he needs it and their cooldown is up.
A bishop heals like 700 hp a pop so use it.
do not issue orders to your minions (unless you want to focus something down), let them follow you.
Strategy related: siege gunners.
Do not have the mwith your general. have them attack towers on the side of the map noone is on. if you have 2 generals, have both send their gunners over.
The gunners are not catapultsauri, sure, but they will take down towers if left unchecked and if some is going to defeat them, well, thats one less demigod to counter your demigod.
Protip: Priests. Fuck those boots of speed, i KNOW that's what you get as your first item. No, BAD! BAD! Generals should be played with many units, so get those priests, get those items that upgrade minion att/att speed, and when that dastardly Unclean comes up to you, you oughta have 6-10 units ready to B***r*** him to kingdom come.
People are used to other people playing generals like they are assassins. They aren't.
For me, playing a General well is all about the *minions*...
1) Get those minion idols, starting with the monk (healer), which also does very nice ranged damage.
(Not counting items or triggered skills for any of the DPS comparisons which follow)
- Six minions from the level 1 idols do 90% of the DPS of the average level 1 Demigod.
- The six minions from the level 4 idols do DPS on par with an average level 14 Demigod.
2) Get those minion-boosting skills, including the one that gives them more DPS. Minions put out FAR more damage than most people realize, I suspect because it is "a lot of little numbers", and (if unmanaged) spread over multiple targets. But if you focus all your minions on one target, their damage output becomes quickly evident as that target vaporizes.
- Six levels of Morale will increase minion DPS by 60%, and Oak minion DPS by 90%.
- Your Demigod minion DPS will rival your own (65% for Queen and Sedna) or exceed yours (150% for Oak and 200% for Erebus).
3) When an enemy Demigod appears, kill him by:
a. Hit M and swarm your minions onto him, then hit H and pull your demigod back *slightly*. If he runs right away, then hit M and pull your minions back, nothing lost.
b. But if he keeps coming then hit N and target everything onto him and also hit him with whatever skills you have. By the time he gets to you he will be at least half dead. You may take a few lumps when he arrives, but he will be getting mauled.
c. Once he is nearly dead and starts to run, then hit H and pull your Demigod back a bit, and hit M and have the minions chase him. Click your idols to refresh any fallen minions, and (if you have it yet) click your "Heart of Life" to replenish any health/mana lost.
Get practiced with this sequence, and your Demigod will rarely take significant damage, while routinely killing off enemy Demigods *quickly*.
4) For items:
- As you want to be able to chose when you engage and when you do not, you absolutely will need to move fast. So boots of speed, wand of speed, etc. are very important.
- Damage items for me are nice, but for minions are absolutely amazing. In the early game, I look for "Gladiator Gloves" and "Gloves of Fell-Darkur".
- Health items are nice, but largely unneeded. Sometimes I will buy one of the lesser armors if I find myself taking hits, but usually not. Once you get the "Heart of Life" you will be able to top off between fights easily.
- Mana items are nice, but are not enough in the early game, and unneeded once you get the "Heart of Life".
- Do not neglect the Citadel upgrades, particularly the Exp boosts, the first level of Gold boost, and the first level of both building enhancements (regen and splash damage).
As a UB player, the generals I have trouble with are the ones that dont engage in combat but just weaken me with their minions. Then they come to finish me off if im stupid enough to hang around on low health.
So I have to keep going back to get healed (pre heart of life) and that just eats up my time.
Here's my take on the 4 generals:
When it comes down to it, each DG is different and can be played lots of ways. It's not just the skill build that counts its the item build that can really make a good DG. The only reason I think why assassins feel easier to play to start with, is because they have some fairly obvious high damage abilities that can give you some easy kills without too much effort. This isn't the case against decent players; which I have found out through some serious beatings!
Oh and this is of course ignoring the fact that it is a TEAM game and your chance of success almost entirely depends on working together.
Thanks for the great replies everyone. I shall take everyones advice and keep working on improving my gameplay with Generals
i surrgest fighting with someone who is good with the gen u want to be good at watch there style of fighting and then see if u can adapted it to ur own
Durokk that's a very informative post, thanks for the tip and I will see how I go with that play style.
What are your recommendations re idol aquisition order? Do you get lvl 2 priests out the door, or do you go for multiple lvl 1 idols?
Which general do you typically play as? I'm an erebus player and I play half way assasin half way general, I certainly use the tactics you mention of getting minions to put their damage in first where possible
Also would you care to post a typical skill progression you'd use as erebus? I guess if I was trying your style I'd go for max bite, max coven size, max moralle, max bat swarm in that order, however maybe trade bat swarm for mist / rolly polly health to back up minions more...
hmm depend how much gold u start with and what dude i prefer getting monks lvl 1 on oak they heal pretty well and in earily battel can be very helpful
