Was part of the beta, was unimpressed. Actual game mechanics aren't as tight as DOTA. Building up to higher tier items was a way better feature rather than in Demigod where you just buy the single item. On top of that, ganking is totally missing from Demigod. You see Demigods clearly and fog of war is nothing in comparison to the fog of war in DOTA that you can actually hide in. Furthermore, the depth of each demigod doesn't make up for the lack of different ones. Skill trees were way exaggerated in terms of Demigod customization.
I've played this game an extensive amount (I could show you if my online stats weren't broken) and this game just doesn't deliver. I was naive to think this game could build some steam.
Despite all this, I didn't care as long as my friends and I would be able to start a clan and have ranked matches together. Never Happened. That system is totally missing and I don't care if you tell me it's coming 4 months from now. I couldn't tell my friends with a straight face to buy his game.
Huge dissapointment. Big Quality drop off from Sins. Selling my demigod account for $10.
Oh yeah, that is the cause why I didn't notice that.
Right.
Huh? Sounds like a kid got wooped in pubs too much and is in denial on how effective ganking is. The OP is 100% right. It's really hard to setup ganks, and even if someone isn't within view, it can be very obvious where they're going to come from because there is never more than two straight paths they can come from.
As for dota, dota has been an on-going work in progress for many years. Demigod is a rip-off trying its own thing, and it's only been out for a few weeks. My first guess is that they got rushed to release it ASAP. Regardless of how it is now, they're working on improving it. If you don't want to play it, come back in a few months and you'll see a more perfect product. Come back in a year and you'll be joining the other hundreds of thousands that could be engulfed in the awesome potential this game has yet to unleash at this time.
Sure there are lots of similarities, but there are also a ton of similarities between Empire Earth and Starcraft. Do you think Empire Earth was trying to copy Starcraft?
Because this new genre is so small, it's hard to think of Demigod as not "copying" DotA because it's more like DotA then anything else.
I'm not saying Demigod isn't supposed to be similar to DotA, or use some of the same mechanics. I'm just saying that they weren't trying to copy it. They built a new game in the genre using features that worked in another game in the genre.
If we didn't build from things that we already knew worked... well, we'd have a lot less things that worked.
Coming from dota I felt that the bounty for killing creeps is a bit too small but at the same time its not like they're hard to kill either, 2-3 hits at the start of the game. On top of that the towers offer 300'ish gold which benefits other heroes, like Reg (with range, rook's syphon, etc), more than others. Relying more on currency upgrade and gold/sec seems silly to me. Against good players killgold can be sometimes hard to come by, makes for kind of a slow game IMO. *shrug* Just my thoughts.
Don't forget you also get lots of gold for a kill (1000, and 500-750 for assists). But yeah, it's hard to earn money quickly in this. I miss last hits. I also miss creeps being meaningful (ie. they can kill you) like how DoTA had it. I also miss recipies. And juking... and terrain.. oh damn, I should stop thinking about this...
To be honest, If they made Demigod like DoTA, they wouldn't really be appealing to their primary consumer base (which for stardock is typically not hardcore-competitive gamers) and it would be a large business risk for them to do that.
After lurking the boards for some time, I've come to appreciate Stardock's business sense. They really know their user base. Shame that the game isn't what us DoTA-fans quite wanted.
It might not be a bad idea if they dropped the gold on kill a bit and raised it on creep kills a bit. There's all kinds of threads with people bitching about once you start dying it's a quick train to facerollville. If the kills weren't rewarded quite as heavily and creep killing was rewarded a bit more it gives people the option of just farming creeps and staying out of trouble if they start feeding, or if someone on your team is feeding their team you can farm creeps to try and get some items together to fight back.
Was always a nice option in DotA to forest if you're getting your shit tossed and hope to get a few items to make it not so bad. Then again they can just come into your forest and make you cry more lol.
Also ganking is a perfectly legitimate strategy. You're a complete idiot if you think this game has anything at all to do with 1v1 or "fair fights" I always loved the people in DotA that get butthurt and say "come 1v1 me by rosh". I wait till they show up and gank them with someone else. You're a fucking idiot if you think you're alone ever or you think there is any form of "honor" in a video game. These games have ZERO to do with your 1v1 abilities, they have everything to do with working with your team. And ganking is the highest form of working with your team.
Can I just say your posts are cooler and cooler?
Nice to not feel like we are opposing forces no more.
and technically it was finished they just didn't realise how popular it was
this thread is a total letdown
I, too, was from the Dota club. I'm not having any trouble seeing the differences between each and appreciating each for its own merits. Some mechanics in Demigod leaves me puzzled:
1) No creep collision results in chasing down to who has stun/slow abilities and who runs faster.
2) Reinforcements are little help when defending against an aggressive demigod. In Dota, the entire allied creep wave attacks the enemy demigod when he/she attacks yours.
3) Some spells are oddly designed with effects that are too situational to be consistently useful.
That said, the things I love about Demigod that Dota doesn't have:
1) Upgradable reinforcements, towers and citadel add a whole new layer of possibilities
2) Capturable flags for extra effects.
3) Very varied builds for the same Demigod.
Some nuances:
1) Unable to see your own HP and MP exact amount till you mouse over the bars on the UI.
2) Unable to see your allies/enemies's MP/items to plan any counters to their builds.
3) Can't click/ping on minimap.
Nice post, much better than the diatribe of dota love from the OP. It's all apples and oranges. Personally I eat both happily.
i would say demigod is using ideas from dota while trying to do something authentic at the same time. i think the end product is pretty good.
to the OP: my friends and i looked at this game from a spectator's perspective pre-release. we didn't have the beta. all we had were screenshots and dev videos. know what our first conclusion was? there isn't going to be ganking like there is in DotA due to the map design and fog of war. you apparently also knew this from beta, so, if this was such a negative, why did you proceed to buy the game? if limited ganking really gets to you, then it seems like you knowingly wasted your money.
as for a lack of clan and group team support, i'm with you. i was pretty disappointed when these features were excluded from release. to me, the game has the major flaws of DotA right now: leavers, feeders, and a lack of incentives to not act like them.
Helping them test this new patch for tonight is really promising, got some 5v5 games going with ppl with 300ms pings. Dont quit, youll regret it later.
This is comming from a guy that has been playing DotA sense it was first created ((Aka before Icefrog picked it up and started making updates)). If your new, I'm assuming you never heard this. There was a point in time DotA was So unpopular due to blaancing bugs map, line of sight, ect ect. problems that it actualy crashed early day computers. At least I have never had that happen with DG. Hello, there was a point in time (1-2 year I think a few years back) when you were hard pressed to find a DotA game. So make all the jabs at Dg if you wish but just know. DotA is, has, and always will be broken to someone at some point in time.
Dg, keep up the good work. If what I hear is true and you plan on giving a nice flow of new demigods after everything is fixed, then I would pay double what I did for my game. Unlike DotA I actualy find enjoyment in thrashing Ai's and testing out new builds, even if I can't put it to test just yet.
Dota? You mean that game full of elitist jackoffs that are incredibly hostile to newcomers? Oh yeah I remember that game.
DOTA is hardly the be all and end all. This genre is finally taking off and other games are coming out besides Demigod so quitcher bitching. If you don't like Demigod's take on it, then go back to DOTA or wait for one of the other clones to come out.
Maybe they should try to copy DOTA. It might be good then.
Do you have any evidence for this statement or are you just making things up? What genre is taking off? you mean the genre that both Demigod and DOTA belong in? DOTA has had millions of players across the globe. You can generally login to games that run smoothly within a few minutes of trying. I have NEVER crashed out of DOTA and I have been playing it for years. I have NEVER had a NAT error or a 1(me)vs2(AI) gave after queuing up for Panthenon game because more than 50% of people drop befoer getting in. Sure their other games like Surpreme Commander and Sins wer cool but this is just a disaster. Unless you are Blizzard it is hard to produce hit after hit because companines get complacent and think they can produce more for less. In Summary: P2P is a complete disaster and hasn't been sucessful in 15 years. Learn from Blizzard and buy a damn server you cheap asses.
This is rediculous. This is like saying the 2009 LA Dodgers are worse than the Yankees because the 1932 brooklyn dodgers sucked. DOTA is the pinnacle of video games. It has literally MILLIONS of people playing it around the world. There are TV channels in Tiawan that brodcast live games. There are Tournaments where people compete for tens of thousanads of dollars. DOTA is free, and it runs well. I could go on and on but I am going to go play DOTA for the rest of the night.
Are you kidding? They tried something new. Maybe it hasn't worked well, but at least they tried. On top of that, they've been better then any other company I know at keeping us updated and making sure they fix all the problems as soon as they can. The reason DotA hasn't crashed on you? It runs off of battle.net, something Blizzard has had a long time to perfect, and from what I've heard, it was far from perfect when it was initially released.
BTW, is it a coincidence that Schloob rhymes with noob?
(sorry, I couldn't help myself with that one. You kinda set that up.)
Yeah I care about personal flames, check my record loser. Anyways, you are sounding the typical fanboy death knells of a dying game. Go to the Darkfall, AoC, WAR forums and there is the same message from people unwilling to let go of the fantasy: The game is getting better, the game will be the best someday, the game doesn't have the same amount of time to develop as other games, the game is only for hardcore players and not suitable for noobs from X game, the company is smaller so less development money. I don't want a dev telling me about the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I am cynical because of the rotten stream of new releases in the last few years that I wasted my money on: AoC, DF, WAR, etc, etc, more than I can remember. These companies did the same thing, tell me how everything will be fixed in a month. Yeah... about that... You know what though... The one game I have played consistently for 5 or more years: DOTA.
This made me LOL:
He called me a noob.

For those who were expecting Demigod to be simply Dota with a new engine, this game will be a let down.
As much as many people like Dota, and Dota certainly served as a source of inspiration, Demigod is not designed to be a Dota clone.
