Demigod is still young so maybe people will wise up, but:
I have seen a number of really annoying strategies or misconceptions employed by my teammates recently that, with your help, I would like to catalog here. This could also be used as a basic guide for what not to do.
1) Tele-sniping Kill Stealers - This one controversial I understand and this certainly can be effective but I usually I just see it used to KS. (Description) Usually these are regulus or TB users who teleport to a won battle (usually over a flag) at the last minute to snipe or Fball a low enemy. (Message to You who do this) Ok, if the enemy has genuinely escaped me, fine, no harm/no foul. However, usually I am oak or TB, or Erebus and my nuke or swarm only has two seconds left on cooldown, I will actually get the kill. Please, by all means teleport in to join the battle and share my experience, its a team game afterall. If he/she is really getting away, sting them in the ass, if not, obey this commandment: "let he who has bled for this kill enjoy its rewards".
2) "Its not my job to heal you, I am Sedna" - Pretty self explanatory. These people pick Sedna, get the heal spell, but refuse to heal anyone else. They will be damned if mana is wasted on a teammate, even if it means letting them get a kill or TP out. Justification of all this, including the match loss, is usually "My teammates suck".
3) "Its not my job to shield you, I am QoT" - See (2) but replace "heal" with "shield", "Sedna" with "QoT" and use slightly less harsh sarcasm.
4) The Middle Manager - These players are good, so good in fact that they know exactly what you need to be doing all game. They know those flags need to be capped, they know the citadel needs to be upgraded, and they know you need to be doing it all. They, of course, let you know what they know, constantly. Meanwhile they farm up a mageslayer for QoT.
5) "No I dont, my build doesnt use Boulder Roll" - Really? Well my build doesnt need to kill DG's to win either. Personally I just hammer slam creeps until my teammates lose the game for us by not defending the base.
Seriously though, as a helpful tip, even tower spamming builds can benefit from a stun.
6) 5-Year old Soccer game - If any of you have ever seen 5 year olds play soccer, you know that it looks like a wide open field with bunch of kids in a tight cluster chasing a small round pied-piper. Apparently, som people apply the same theory, sometimes referred to as "dogs chasing cars", to demigod, which is to say they spend all game chasing the shiny enemy demigod or running back to base to buy something everytime they get 600g and never manage any shots on goal. Please, try to cap a flag once in a while or kill some creeps. The reason UB kills you everytime you catch up is not because we arent running along beside you into the enemy base, its because hes 5 levels above you (level 6). Awareness and map control is one thing, this is just rediculous.
Feel free to add your (least) favorites, or flame me, w/e.
In regards to your number one:
The time it takes to cast a teleport is not minor when it comes to battle. You can very, very easily begin casting a teleport before the outcome is determined. Also you aren't sure if they have a QoT, Sedna or Oak running towards them in fog to aid, if they have a potion on them to change the tide or what. You get half the gold if your just counted as an assist, this is good had the person not aided you would then be out half of whatever the amount of gold was, so instead of getting 1000 and 500, just one person gets 1000, which one is more beneficial even if it was something so blatent as a regulas snipe when the outcome is obvious?
Yep, #1 just says "I'd rather get 1000g for myself instead of having my team get 1500g"
If I'm playing Regulus, I am NOT going to leave it up to chance on whether or not you will actually succeed in killing the demigod. Maybe he'll heal and his teammates will pop out and stun you and kill you instead because you're being a greedy dbag. Given that in most games now, 2/3 of my gold goes to citadel upgrades that help us win, you really shouldn't be complaining about who gets the gold. You should worry about how the team gets the most gold.
I play Sedna a lot, and I get LOTS of guff from people typing "HEAL HEAL HEAL". I have ONE heal. It has a LONG cooldown. I have LIMITED mana. And if there are THREE people all yelling "HEAL" from different areas of the map, I have to pick ONE to heal. Add to that the constant: "can't use your ability bacuase it locked up so you have to move and THEN you can use your heal" bug, and things don't always work out. There are also those players who want Sedna to just follow them around like a dog on a leash, holding my finger over the #3 key, and do NOTHING else. And god help me if I DARED to put any points into anything but heal and silcen. And beleive it or not, sometimes I need to use my ONE heal on myself, which means I won't have it for a while if I do (how selfish of me).
"Just follow me around, and heal me like a good little healbot, and then I won't complain. HEY, who said you could wander off on your own and take a flag or go to the store, get BACK here and follow me around! OMG, you used a pounce! Who said you could put points in anything that does not help me! Get back behind me and just do your job! Ok, I'm going to run into those 4 towers next to those 3 enemy DGs, so you BETTER keep me alive. HEY, I died, you %&#$! Why did'nt you heal me!"
1) is the only iffy one. At the end, a dead enemy Demigod is better than a not dead one. If you're unable to interrupt or kill a Demigod charging teleport, you really shouldn't be complaining that a teammate kills it, especially since you get assist gold for it (as an aside, some of us did try to argue in beta that kill credit should go to most damage dealt and assists to less damage dealt, rather than base it on the kill shot). But on the other hand, if a teammate never uses any abilities and you do most of the killing and they snipe for the kill shot constantly, it's annoying, but ultimately it still contributes to giving your team an advantage. It's frustrating to the player whose kill gets stolen and might brand the sniper as a kill-stealer to avoid in future games, but in that game it shouldn't alienate good team players since the ultimate goal is a win.
Let's take 1 to its full logical conclusion. You, with the fast attack speed, go away. You're stealing my kills even though I probably did the majority of the damage from a bursted 6 mines + mark of the betrayer + 3 more mines as they run.
The teams I most fear are the teams made out of actual friends who all know what they are doing, and always work together. Noone really likes to be a part of a randomly alloted team
To summarize:
1) Don't kill a weakened enemy DG I'm fighting. I'd rather have all the gold myself.
2) Sedna players must heal me at all times.
3) QoT players must shield me at all times.
5) All Rooks must have Boulder Roll.
6) Do not chase enemy DGs or buy items unless I deem it correct to do so.
4) Players who tell other players what to do and how to play are annoying.
I only play with 1 RL friend so theres always that retard to screw the game up, the team is only as good as your weakest link.
As an avid regulus fan, i'll always use my snipe as much as i can. A dead enemy DG doesnt come back for 30 seconds. That can usually lead to large swings. Otherwise, I like your other posts.
I disagree with most of this...
1) If the player shows up and scores a kill then it's teamwork. I highly doubt they decided to warp in to get the kill themselves, they were trying to lend a hand. Sometimes they might be trying to kill steal, but odds are they weren't.
2) If you die, it's your fault. Sedna is not there to be your b**ch. Carry potions, teleport out, whatever you need to do to avoid feeding the enemy. It's up to the player whether or not to heal you, you shouldn't be staying in a losing fight because you expect a heal.
3) Same as #2 except you replace "heal" with "shield."
4) Remember #2 and #3, well, this is basically the same thing. Don't tell people how to play and not do the same. There are items that can be used to heal teammates, so maybe you should be bringing them to backup your allies.
5) Same as #2, #3, and #4...You play your build, the other person will play there build. stun is great, but some people might be perfectly capable without it.
6) Assuming that I intepreted this one correctly, I think I actually agree with this.
Teammwork is great, but if you want to play with a mindless drone you might as well play single player or custom.
1. When I play as Reg, I make sure the DG goes down. I am not aiming to Killsteal, I just want them 100% taken out.
2. I play a bit as Sedna, I find it annoying when people are running backwards and they are out of range of my heal. How do you expect to get healed if you are running away from me.
1) All people are greedy bustards by nature, but there are some excaptions! Why would you care if a Regulus "steal" YOUR kill?I played lots of games, with lots of stolen kills, yet at the game summryafter a win or lose, i always saw that i had more gold then all my teamatesi played with a UB who had x3 times more kills then meyet we had the same ammount of gold, so you probbly ask yourself"how is it possible", well idk but its a fact, i am usual the first one to geta mage slayer, heart of life, and some mana boosters, plus i tend to spenda lot of teleports and cap locks, and after mid game it is moustly me who pay forcatapults and giants.
Remember, if your team mate got the kill and the gold insted of youit only means that now he is stronger and can help you win the game!as far as you may look at it, he got uber items and most kills and in the end you win too.
2) Lots of nubs around, some of them not only ignoring youthey dont even heal themselfs when needed, sad really...if you see such players, let them fight alone, stick to the other DGs (in case of 3v3 or more)
3)same as 2
4)for such players i tend to say "join me as a team mate over battles or GTFO"
5) never force players to change build or strategy, they play as they know bestif they change things they got lost and then they are useless anywaysif a Rook wont use bulder throwing skill, then so be it, live with it!
6) one of the basic strategy trick is to use the game conditions to your owngood, if some nub do as you say (never saw someone like that though)bring the battle to him instead of calling him to join youoverall there is 1 good thing about it, he fight off creepsand this keeps your towers safe, which forces enemy DGs to take on towers without creepsand while they take loads of damage you just teleport behind them and finish them.
I'm not half kidding the OP is nonsense, i dont agree with it at all, #1 is stupid and is the kind of mentality that leads to losing.
I agree 100%. I don't know anybody who plays DG --- being a girl doesn't help. I'm always on randomly-selected teams of total strangers. I don't know anything about their gameplay level & style, and I certainly will not dare to try to lead the team : many players are selfcentered fun-seekers who resent any form of advice. Sometimes, my random team is matched against a gang of friends, who are fully aware of their respective levels & styles, and who will gladly coordinate on the team chat. The outcome of such mismatches is fatally obvious.
My solution is to spot, during the game-setup chat, who is exchanging friendly banter with whom. I can be sometimes wrong, but when I detect that I'm going to be stuck with strangers against organized gangbangers ... I leave the setup lobby fast.
This being said, if I do not want to lead or lecture team8s on the in-game chat, I will gladly follow instructions from a team8 who wants to be the leader ... as long as he does not dictate to me how I should play better my chosen DG. (There's a RPG dimension, in DG, that is important to me : I won't play a DG in the optimized, hyper-logical style another gamer has previously designed in his home-basement lab.)
Well it sounds like everyone will agree on three things:
1) it is possible to get shafted with Teammates who are of lesser experience or to get matched against teams who are all good and use ventrilo
2) Subtlesalmon has no sense of humor
3) The girl is probably the smartest one here but the south korean I got in my basement will teach me to pwn her.
That's just wrooooong.
And funny as hell.
Think 1 should be:
If you're regulus and getting snipe as your first skill then upgrading the citadel should be your first priority as until you get mines or angel you're pretty much useless in a 1v1 fight. Plus as it's been said their intentions isn't to kill steal, in reg's case it's to use his ability for it's purpose: long range killing. Half the time I use it i'm orginally just trying to deal a chunk of damage to them to lower them to below 20% or so. Unfortunatly the person hitting the enemy hits them really hard really quick and my snipe kills them. At the same time though it normally happens after I was just running back from base after upgrading us to priests.
I liked your post, it was pretty funny. However, some of the things were way too extreme. I don't know about the middle manager, because I usually play 2v2 and haven't seen them around. Mainly, its me saying stuff ("b b b b") and the other guy not replying a word. Stealing kills might lose you some gold and experience, but hey he just saved you some mana and time. I don't care if the other guy gets the kill in a 2v2, or even if the creeps steal my kill early game. It is still an offset for the other team, and will spell victory either way. And Boulder Roll isn't a pinnacle of Rook. I've seen some pretty good Rooks just tower pushing without even using the stun and it is still pretty effective.Point is, most pubs aren't too into cooperation, and you must develop a sense of independence as a pubber. You shouldn't rely on teammates to win.
On kill "stealing": the team gets more gold if there is a kill with an assist than without an assist. I believe more assists also adds more gold, unless they've changed that since beta. So don't get upset over it!
I like this post, it sucks to play with others that are not very friendly and I get that. Please don't assume everyone is mean though, that doesn't end well for either party. I say remember the good and forget the bad when it comes to playing with others because there are going to be plenty of both to experience
edit: I like the assist system in this game, everyone wins in those cases.
Nothing is wrong, under any circumstances, with sniping an enemy: that's what the skill exists for. If you don't wanna 'lose' your kills to sniping allies then you should get the job done faster. It's extremely ridiculous to complain about that. Dracil is spot-on with his debunking of your complaint about that.
Some things I agree, others not but I wanted to add a new situation that others might want to comment on.
One of the things I dont really like in games, esp on 2v2 is when your teamate wants you to put 100% of your money on the citadel no matter the game type or the role you want to play or the ennemy DG you fight against, and when you dont he gets annoyed and starts spamming the chat.
One such game was against two rooks. Knowing this, i went on full offense with speed boost ring (this one i usualy always take) and boots at start (switched to boots after knowing i was against rooks), great against slow rooks. As the game progressed, my allied kept putting all his cash on citadel and was unable to team against one of the DG for easy kill (and additional gold), instead i had to constatly watch what he was doing and joining him as an enemy DG was about to attack him for better chance of an early kill. After a while and a few kills, i managed to get a few levels ahead and was able to take on the ennemy DG's on my own as well as the entire mob spawns with nova. At this point, the enemy DG could barely reach our towers, yet my team8t kept crying for citadel upgrades (upgrading the mob spawns would have only contributed to them being able to level faster on their own).
Anyways, in the end, i had a few good 10 000 - 15 000 gold items, and made my way to the citadel and blew it with a 7 level advantage over the best enemy DG and close to that also for my teamate. (the enemy DG's having quit mid game because they couldnt get kills anymore)
So, while I agree that sometimes, putting gold on the citadel can be good, especially on some maps or against some DG that can counter your own DG good but sometimes its also compleatly unnecessary as the enemy DG are not geared to counter your type of DG (like in the example above) and full offense tends to lead to quick victory, yet you have team8tes that cant stop whining and cant seem to see the big picture.
Anyone else had these?
That's why I play Pantheon and Skirmish exclusively. Yeah, sometimes I get paired with newbies -- but the other side is matched randomly too, so it's even (on average). I generally try to open friendly communication on my side when I get into the match, not taking charge, but saying stuff like "watch yourself, that guy's hitting hard" and "please try to play a little more conservatively, every time you die they get money and that makes them even tougher to get away from". Even just "careful" entered whenever I see a teammate doing something risky seems to help. The worst I've gotten so far is players who never say a word in chat and appear to be ignoring everything I say -- some of them are pretty good, others ... not.
Summary: I've found that a lot of people will take advice on board if you phrase it in a constructive way rather than "u suck n00b stp feeding them!1!!". (which I've never run into, but I've played *against* a few people who raged about their teammates in open chat once they started losing, and I can only imagine what they were saying in private)
Heh. I played with a person the other day who was all over Ally chat every time I or our #3 made a move he didn't like. Ridiculous. About 5 minutes in he made an announcement to All regarding the skill level of his team and then /quit.
After we lost that anchor we started doing well in the game. Apparently the less skillful/suicidal AI was a better option than an overly critical middle manager.
The concept if "kill steal" make no sense in Demigod, because Demigod is a teamgame. It probably make sense on other games, not on this one.
