I know that the devs already have the next patch already have it planned, but if you could influence the direction, what do you want to see in the next update/patch.
For me what I want from the release of a more complex AI whether in battle or better pathfinding.
Now that the release notes for the 1.17 and 1.03 have been released, what do you think about it. and what bugs and changes would you like to see.
New information have been released:
Although it was in answering a modding post Blair Frasier have drop some hints as to what to expect from the next patch:
a version of the update that is available from somewhere other than impulse would be great
as for other things, i dont know. perhaps unerfing the Dunov shierld restore back to its v1.05 level. because now it is about 60% as good as it used to be and is only really useful when you get to level 3
Yeah, pathfinding in battle is atrocious. I think another option to modify the ship/fleet stance would be the ticket, ie maximize damage given, minimize damage taken, maximize damage given/taken ratio, so the pathing ai has a better idea of what it is that you actually want. I know that would create some really interesting side effects, too, like kortuls ramming into the middle of the battle ball and LFs chasing each other in circles, but it should be done! Perhaps retreat should autochange temporarily to minimize damage taken, crank the old engines up to 100%, and lastly start steering for the best path out (rather than steering first and moving second). I know my aging pile of transistors is giving me the evil eye for this, but I think it would be better.
Definitely tweak the pathfinding algorithm so that it will perform one jump from one star to another rather than taking 10 or so jumps through a wormhole to a different solar system and THEN jumping from its star to the intended destination.
I don't think the Dunov's Shield Restore has to be reverted to pre-1.1 values... (at level 3, SR restores 1050 shield every 16 seconds, or 65.625 shield/second -- in contrast, the present level 3 SR restores 750 shield every 11 seconds, or 68.182 shield/second).
If you want better competition, I highly recommend that you consider playing the game in online multiplayer. You will find it much, much more challenging, fulfilling, and interesting than single player and you might even make some new online gaming friends. You can also enjoy the camraderie of having real human allies and of trying to coordinate a game plan and teamwork. Just click the Ironclad Online button and discover the universe that is online multiplayer.
Anyway, what I'd like to see in the next patch:
1. Custom map auto-downloading for online multiplayer.
2. Improve Entrenchment so that Entrenchment players can see and join regular Sins games seamlessly and flawlessly. (I think that was the original plan.)
Yeah - that is REALLY going to happen. Sins is DISTRIBUTED by Impulse. It is in the manual. They are not going to do stand alone patches and have only done it in the early days as Impulse was not ready...
What's so bad about installing impulse? Hell, it dl'd and installed 1.16 and I didn't even know there was a 1.16 until I saw the title of this thread.
Which is why they use it - it is an auto-patch to the current version, and works by doing a delta between what you have and what you need.
I hope we will get a new Forge Tools version for this patch.
Including a fixed Galaxy Forge. cause in the latest version of GF the some of the templates cannot used with the included template editor.
i bow to your wisdom concerning the Shield restore thing
also, i must ask this:
is there any way to download an update for SINS through Impulse and then transfer it to another PC????
Does the archive option work for this? Archive the game (or download+archive just the update) on the PC with internet connection, and use Impulse on the other PC to install the archive.
Maybe a marine ship for Tec so we can steal capital and star ships from other races
The problem is that some people do not have internet access or very limited access. The problem also comes into play that many of us do not want to be forced to end up tied to requiring the use of internet just to use and play our purchased software.
I bought the DVD version but have no choice in updating. What happens when I do not have internet access? Or I live in an area that has no option to even get internet access?
IF companies would stop releasing buggy software, then perhaps it would not be such an issue. But unlike the way it USED to be, companies today do not take the time anymore. Thousands and thousands of game were released for Amiga, Atari ST, PC and even older systems. A few did have some bugs but 99% of the games written then you would be hard pressed to find a bug in or at least one that made the game unplayable.
And btw, I KNOW it is possible to do because at one time in my life I was part of a team that did it in the past. Today I still code although not in the gaming arena rather business and application software. I can tell you were the stuff I did even HALF as buggy as most of the game titles out now, I would not be coding anything anymore - and during my military career, could have been a HUGE problem. And BTW, I have heard the argument that games are more elaborate or more detailed or more involved in programming... Not true.. Show me one program/game that works with real time sat data, real time microwave, radio, and telemetry data PLUS active 3D graphics as well as stills and video.... and NO known bugs. Then we can go with that argument.
No, I am one of those that does not and will not accept the requirement if it ultimately is forced upon us. Just like I will not accept the limiting of my bandwidth or having bandwidth capped at a certain amount per month. If things get to that point in these areas, innovation on the internet, commerce on the internet will all slow to a crawl... and many people, me included will stop using the net as a regular tool like we do today. Instead it will be log in once in a while to get email and that is about it.
Most of the people I know who are also devs now all say the same thing. This service might be good for the companies operating it as a revenue stream. But it takes away the users ability to make their own choices when they want and where they want. It forces us users to abide by THEIR rules, not by our own when it comes to controlling what we want to do, when we want to do it and where we want to do it.
Think about it.. do you truly want to be REQUIRED to have internet at all times just to run your games or software? Where does it end and how much control are people willing to loose?
Malakie
Man, I see what you mean now. I didn't know that impulse stopped you from playing your game when you're not connected to the internet. That's a really cheap shot. And all this time I thought I only needed the internet to play on ICO, not single player, too. Yeah, before the internet they never even patched games, so you got to play it the way the devs intended, with all of those features people like ironclad want you to think are bugs so they keep taking your money from you and make you connect to the internet to get patches and updates and improvements. If only I had known that they were going to force me to stay connected to the internet just so I can play this best selling game, I wouldn't have ever installed impulse to get the updates, I just would have dusted off my XT and played Zork. I can't believe these people could be so cheap to not keep track of my home address for me and mail me a new DVD with the latest updates on it every time they think of a way to make the game better. I'm glad I read your post because I'm not going to live under their thumb any longer, no sir, I'm not ever going to get another free update from them or anyone else.
I would like the AI in Entrenchment to know what it takes to destroy an enemy starbase. If you place a well-upgraded starbase in a gravity well with neutral extractors, the AI becomes obsessed with taking it down, except it doesn't know how to. The AI always attacks with too small a force and I tire of seeing the AI throw away fleet after fleet without making any progress. It really takes much of the challenge out of the game.
EDIT: Spelling.
Its in beta but Impulse Anywhere will let you do that

YES!!! In addition to TohKlidan's suggestions, I want a Galaxy Forge with a copy/paste feature, undo feature, snap-to-grid feature, and more, MOAR! And map conversion seems to be a big issue.
I love map making, but I refuse to do so with Sins due to Galaxy Forge's user-unfriendliness.
Impulse does NOT stop you from playing your game if you dont have Internet. That would be Steam. All Impulse does is allow and easy and quick way to manage your game and updates. You dont even have to have Impulse install to play SINS, only patch it the newest patch. All that is required to do that is that you link your CD Key to an Impulse account. There are stand alone patches up to 1.05, after that every new patch is delivered through Impulse. Its quicker and the downloads are faster. Due to how Impulse updates. It does not send you every single file but only those your missing and/or that have been changed. They are not gonna change their stance on standalone patches. Sorry to all who think otherwise, its would be bad buisness.
There any many many topics on ppl who either hate Impusle or Like it. Lets not turn this post into one of those, please.
***edit*** I thought my sarcasto-mockery was obvious.
LOL, it was to me. But then again my post wasnt directed at you.
Hello devs,
First of all thanks for that awesome game. Iam still playing it and the only other RTS that o played for so long is Warcraft 3 and this only because of DOTA
But lets get to the Point. Besides what Sokar468 posted about the AI being able to build a proper fleet to attack a starbase or just use structure busting ships and keep all other ships out of range ....
My Main Suggestion is to set the Experience value that a Starbase gives based on its enhancement upgrades
For Example
+80 XP for evey Offensive and Defensive Ugrade
+40 XP for every other Upgrade
So if you fight a really heavy starbase at least the XP reward is decent.
Another Option would be great... Waypoints for Ship Production or
Maybe it is possible already but to set waypoints for all ship factorys so they evade pirate bases and heavily fortified systems.
Another possibility would be to flag planets/asteroids/gas giants/pirate bases/wormholes as (no scout/no travel through) so scout ships and or fleets avoid those and plan their way around them. Pirate bases could be automaticaly flagged as both as soon as disovered.
i would like AI's to form actual fleets. i know it sounds silly, but i have honestly not played a game against a set of AI with real fleets since WAY before entrenchment. the most recent one actually was entrenchment but it was simply 1 advent fleet guarding a planet and standing off from one of my frontline worlds.
but i remember playing a map where i fortified a desert world, but didnt have the fleet supply to defend it, so i just fortified it (pre entrenchment mind you) and left, expanding right instead of forward through an enemy stronghold.
the enemy fleet, i think it was vasari, tried to attack me many times. and it was a large fleet too, with capital ships and about 7 pips large. i held it off with base defenses and i think 4 kodiaks, 3 LRF and some support cruisers. i dont remember, maybe the AI was set on easy, but i mean, it still formed REAL fleets, and actually attacked planets.
as it stands, im playing a medium sized 4 system map, and im not really fighting fleets, just groups of ships between 6 and 25 strong, and lone lvl one cap ships without any support...
i dont know, it could be a side-effect of the new entrenchment AI (ie turtling) but, then, whats the fun for me if im always the one breaking the fort? i can go for most of a game and only fortify a few key worlds... the enemy doesnt seem interested in sending fleets against you?
How about the ability to include Colony Frigates in a fleet of Capital Ships and other various battle based ships.
Here's a couple.
When you designate a migrator to build a starbase, you pay for it right then, and if they migrator gets killed, you get a refund. Autocasting mines on a tight budget can be a bitch.
Once the orkulus starts building, you can buy the upgrades you want it to have, and they start as soon as it's finished (and finish faster in an enemy grav well just like the build). I mean, is this a starbase killer or what?
Anyone know when the next patch is coming out?
It still bugs me that the Advent Starbase planet bombardment range at level 2 is almost nothing. Also, I've noticed when you buy multiple fleet upgrades and queue up your ships, the ships don't start building till all the upgrades finish.
