I've been passing the time in various ways:
1. Devising new strategies and crushing AIs in Civ4. Praetorian power!
2. Reseating flagstones. (my life is very exciting).
3. Playing with my new kitten!
Sentient species taste better...
They are pretty major chain across the US, have bought out a lot of the competition and now hold a monopoly in many areas. Their PC support is lethargic at best though. They seem to make most their money giving kids next to nothing for selling them used console games that they then resell for 75% or more of the new retail price.
This was discussed on the Demigod forum and Brad said there would be no suing going on. I just think a little "oopsie" with any new game release/shipment to them from SD would fix'em. They can't sell it before release if they don't get it till the day of(or a day or two after even)
There really isn't any 'game stores' around here that I know of that aren't EB/Gamstop. There is the evil that is Walmart though if I'm so bent on avoiding Gamestop.
I do agree, a 'mistake' in delivery may be warrented, but then Gamestop would just badmouth SD/GPG to their customers saying 'it didn't get here in time', which is their excuse for pre-ordering games and then not revising the delivery date until AFTER a swarm of people come to pick up the games because "the developer missed it's date".
I'm starting to think that brick-n-morter game stores are the reason for my downturn in gaming. The complete dickitude I get from being around one of their 'sales associates'. And NO, I don't want a gawd damned CD cleaner!!!!
LAMO!!
Or the Scratch warranty, im nearly 32 years old i think i can take care of my discs.
Yup, we have EB everywhere here too......
Metaverse is down??
Man, here I am playing one of most nail-biting games I've played on TA in a while...add to that, I JUST signed up to the Metaverse several days ago after years of playing GalCiv games...now I hear that the hamster/wheel combo that powers Meta has to be replaced.
Boogers!
EB = Gamestop...ever since 2005. So, insofacto you have Gamestops down under
Just thought I'd point out that Gamestop broke the street date and Gamespot gave them a nasty review for it. Totally different entities.
Which just makes me miss all the more the days when Games Domain was truly "by gamers, for gamers."
Also, thanks for helping a feeble-eyed Gerontocrat remember to double-check the spellings for entity names. I'm now vaguely recalling completely different reasons for holding both Gamespot and Gamestop in contempt. The former are industry suck-ups and the latter are vultures preying on adolescent deck-game junkies. Neither do anything to help folks with an interest in seeing 'niche' games get their due and continue to increase their sophistication.
Ahh ty Willy. I hadn't noticed i erred. Not knowing either entities didn't help.
@Loup. Ahh ok, then yes we have them. Eb has been like a plague here for many years. Last thing i bought from them was some Sony 2 games for my son. That was some time ago, i refuse to purchase through them unless i absolutely have to.
We have a store here called JB Hi-Fi. Its all electronics/movies/music/computing and gaming.
They are a one stop shop for me for just about everything i need. If they sold food and petrol i'd buy them there too.
I guess it's our version of Best Buy...but actually really cool.
Well I'm "rushing" through one of my month-long games now. The MV will probably be back before i can finish anyway.
hammerin
Shame, I just got a new PC and went through all the pain of reinstalling only to find no meta.
This may take the cake for stardock. How freaking hard is it to have a server support the start and end of a freaking game? My lord.
The thing is it isn't hard. They just don't care anymore. (and haven't for about a year at least)
Well, they did suffer an uncoordinated but effective denial of service attack over the weekend. Something about a hundred thousand people trying to log onto the demigod servers and breaking their entire system.
Strange what one thinks of at 3:30 am:
Stardock just released UE to retail in February. DL and DA are also still in retail. Imagine what all these new customers must think when they come here. The metaverse does not work, ToA has major bugs, we're up in arms, and we have yet to see even one recent statement from Brad about any of this.
Because of the retail release, stardock can't just abandon the metaverse, either. At least not without an even worse consequence to their reputation. I realize, of course, that there is little that can be done to speed up the restoration of the MV server considering the Demigod situation. I'm just throwing this out here because I am not sure whether stardock has a sufficient understanding of the current situation as it relates to new GalCiv2 customers.
KP, I have a question, may you answer it? What is the full name of Civ4?
I have been playing WarHammer 40,0000: Dawn of War II. It is the newest game they have out. I like it because this time you have a story line and you get to change items on your units, I mean upgrade weapons and other cool things. I like using the 19th level power chainsaw sword, cuts through orcs like butter.
Saint Mina of Ophelia VII of Order of the Bloody Rose of Orders Militant of Adepta Sororitas
Oh my......
@Snark: All these things defiinitely will have a significant negative impact on people's perception of SD. Seems like pretty bad timing! Hey SD, if you fix the MV by this evening, I'll buy another copy. Surely that's worth an hour of somebody getting it fixed?
@GmOONi: Civilization 4, of one of the most venerable and respected series of 4x games around. Some of my friends play table-top 40k with all the miniatures and such. A long time ago I played the epic-scale version where a soldier was about 2 cm tall.
PS: so we are already two...I am sure more of us will join and little by little we bring up enough for a new server or something
Nice tobacco pipe and scottish beret on your new avatar, snark!
Here's the situation, staff is busy with some decisions;
Could they hire more people?
Should Elemental beta be delayed?
Will GC3 devs be transfered on another floor of the SD skyscraper in Plymouth and will Frogboy buy the Sears tower or acquire something in the Chicago Spire to move everyone on the 145th once some fantasy dust has settled?
Corporate priorities being strange in nature, i doubt we can have any influence on their time tables... but to me, uploading in the local library is "relatively" important.
Blaming Demigod for that much success is simply tooooooo weird -- in real time.
Why not playing a mod and play Mod Metaverse on I-Mod Productions while waiting until the Metaverse is fixed?
it's cheatproofed and makes same fun. If you play the Ultimate FX Mod you will have same gameplay but overall better graphics!
kind regards
Thanks!!!!
Hehe. I'll have to recount some tales of our Snathi tobacco and the interesting events surrounding it's use by the Jessuins one of these days......
Arrrggggh, I still can't access I-Mod sites... and no matter where i look in my local Vista "flaws" or presumed reasons i'm always back to Bell ISP connection servers.
Could be the modem itself or some domain hi-jack via rootkits.
Sadly, i'm not the ONLY one experiencing your total virtual absence, stefan.
Is X-Worlds 06-A up & running?
I want a definitive solution to this mess, what do you recommend - anyone?
This weekend, my methadone will be the NFL draft. Anyone else?
Amen to that
Anyway, while the metaverse has been down, I've been stuffing around playing a gigantic map as the Arceans, getting an idea of how they play. I must say it has been incredibly enjoyable too, especially considering how the mega events turned out. One thing I did when setting up the game was turn off tech brokering and trading, and set research speed to slow, which meant to me, anyway, weapons like lasers and stingers actually were important. As for the mega events, the first one hurt me a lot, which was the pirates, so I had to really work on getting together a good fleet together to crush them. But just after the pirates came the dreadlords, who, along with the pirates, smashed all of my starbases. At this point, I didn't have much in the way of starships, so it was a fairly pathetic site. And following on from the dreadlords was the next super event which was the plague. When the plague hit, things were at a real standstill in the universe, if I wanted to expand, I'd have to attack someone, and I had no idea who I would attack considering my closest neighbour (iconians) was getting all of my trade, and the other neighbour (Krynn) was the most powerful civ in the game. For comparsion, while their military was rated at about 360, mine was sitting in at 50. Because of such a low military rating, I didn't dare go to war with anyone to take their worlds while their population was low, I was the first to research the cure for the plague. But the next interesting decision was somewhat made for me. As I pondered who I would attack, the Jagged Knife came along with their usual flair, and all of a sudden, there was a whole lot of "neutral" worlds for me to conquer. The transports were built nice and quick, and sent out, and all of a sudden, my empire just grew to the point that, as far as population goes, I was on equal footing now with the Krynn (the most powerful empire). The Krynn didn't like me taking their former worlds, nor did the Iconians, so they both declared war on me. I hurt the Iconian's badly, and made them a shadow of their former selves, and have crushed much of the Krynn's military. Essentially, their fleets would be completely annihilated, while my fleets would get away with at most, 1-2 HP lost. Now the Krynn are asking for peace as they watch their worlds get swaped around them, while my own war machine is still just gearing up. Currently, my miliary rating is about 120, theirs is 250, but I'm systematically going through each and every world in their system hammering the defenders and starbases into submission.
I ain't stopping for no one now.
