What tactic do you like the most?
Carriers: LAUNCH EM! Build a lot of em, mix the fighters and bombers.
Capital Ships: (so can we just ram these little guys?) Build mostly caps with support frigetes to repare and resupply.
Spam: Lots of smaller ships light frigs and seige frigetes while attacking their defences and fleets as much as possible.
Tech: (Ok who ate cheetos at the keyboard?) Focusing on upgrading one ships to maximum level and then using it almost exclusivly with minimal support units.
Razing:BURN BABY BURN! Using seige rushes on planets and lrm/illums to take out population/tech stuctures in a harrasing pattern.
Turtle: WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE! Orbital Defences, Starbases, etc you get the picture.
Econ: Ahh the smell of money! Trade and population upgrades while only taking planets that supply reliable trade routes.
I personally like to use Tech myself with a combination of early razing of tech structures and resorces.
Other: w.e you have to suggest?
Personally i love mixing fleet and go to war : As Advent, make 10 LF with your mothership to colonize fastly three planets, then make 3 military labs and go for illum and carriers. Make enough carriers and illum to almost fill your fleet supply level 2, add an Halcyon and attack : you should be able to destroy the enemy cap and his fleet and take one of his early colonized planet with a few loss thanks to micro and shield restore . All of that in less than 30 minutes of game, if you are quite fast.
At mid game, ad a third capital (radiance or rapture for the 30% damage bonus for carriers) and some guardians and start the rampage.

Well... funny u ask that today.... i just finish a Multi Large Random VS 7 Hard AI.
and i was only ''fleeted up'' to 3 tier and all my Supply slots were For caps (minus a 50 pts that i use for Starbases and colo ships as a supply Buffer) when i started to Research as a MAd scientist that wanna take over the world (....w8.... its the goal of the game right?), making sure i dont do ANY research for Frigate/cruiser.
So pretty soon (about 1 / 1&1/2 hour)
All my researchs are pretty much done so my caps are WAY more powerfull that ANY of the AI ones
i got more Armor more hull and more dmg output in 1 vs 1 even with non matching lvl!
Having 16 Caps ( 2 fleet of 8 caps. no Frigate) and only 1/2 of the Fleet upgrade done. Sure .... i got small fleet if u compare to a 2 caps 5 tiere fleet AI... but when u got 8 CS comming in a system. Ur pretty much Screwd.
And 1/2 ur fleet upgrade stilll gives u more than 50% of ur income.... so even if i loose 1 or 2 CS in a MAJOR (ya it must be a BIG opp. fleet). i can rebuild them as quick as I want.... and i know my Newly CS lvl 1 is STILL more powerfull than his lvl 5.
if theres no Starbase in the way (aka Vasari SB) i rush all my CS to planet Bombing range and nuke teh hell out as fast as i can. then i micro all Remaining Fleet to minimize damage..... if the Culture isnt too strong.... i colonize right away and build 2 repair stations so i can Camp here while Planetary d-fence are in the making..... restoring hulll and AM, when its done... i move my Battleball of 8cs to the next system.
i play like that with Advent and Tec cuz they suit that playstyle quite well.... but for vasari, i dont make 2 X8 caps, because of the all mighty Phase stabilizer. i can be whereever whenever i want.... so 16 CS is just the way to go.
Today I ran an Econ set up early on and just fought for astroids and small planets for 30 min or so with only two light frigs and one cap ship with colonization as TEC. Then after my econ was up I tech/spam lrms and repair ships. It worked very well and my fleet basicly owned the rest of the night. I flanked and hit his home planets all in a row and focused on wiping out structures.
Give that one a shot!

Just got out of a game where I used razing. It works really well in the early rounds but I had to switch to spam later on to win the match. Main problem I had was having my razing ships survive the assualts. Spam made up for that but still...
Anyone got any good tips on razing???
Yeah quick expansion is vital when your doing that. Depending ont the map size I can expand pretty quick with TEC or Advent. One thing to watch out for though is someone hitting you with razing ships. That screws you up real bad if it happens early one. Then you have to march all over the map chaseing them down.
For example if he takes out those military research facilitys your screwed real early.(you'll be like WHA? ) I had a guy do that once and I only had 2 carriers out and about at the time. I never really recovered and I had to switch to an Econ strat to catch back up.
I normally don't have matches that long. My whole match normally lasts around hour and a half. But, in a long game like your talking about I would think that techin would be vital to survive long term.
Quick question, how many planets did you have under your control? Because 16 capital ships sounds great but the most I normally have is 3-5 in my games. But, mabye a HUGE map like that you would have to have that much. Idk but the support alone would be huge is my guess. Also did you have ANY frigets at all? It seems like your caps would be very exposed.

Oh they are... and that's exactly the plan.... they can take a LONG punishemnt with proper repair and with the boost ugot early on with all the armor upgrade instead of wating money in ship that will be destroy after a while....
so more income to research more to get better/longlasting ship.
Oh and the funny thing... i DONT CARE about mine at all.... lol... i sometimes move my caps on those feild to trigger them...just cuz im to lazy to build a scout
another game with Large 3 star random.... again win the game vs HARD ai... easly win.... build 3 colo and 20 scout in the entire game..... rest was caps
on the how many planters.... al song as u can get 10 or so... with well controled choke pts... u can survie multiple asault using only 4 caps ( 2X2team) and building researching. my maps are ALWAYS huge or large multi...my shortest game was 1.5 hour...on medium map.... but since im not mp., i prefer long lasting/couple save game. so i can REALLY feel teh empire size
(20 planetes isnt an empire as far as im concerned )
oh and i play DS mod from Mad. ver 2.2
