Overall I really love this game, but there are a couple things missing that I find very frustrating:
I really wish GalCiv included actual BORDERS, including open/closed border agreements, etc. It's really annoying that one empire can send a huge war fleet into another and they can't be asked to withdraw their ships or anything. The target civ is forced to either declare war first themselves (incurring a diplomatic penalty just for defending themselves) or else let the invaders choose their target planet with impunity - often being forced to split up their defenses among multiple planets all in range of the invading fleet (like a knight's "forking" maneuver in chess).
There really needs to be some way for an empire to control who enters their territory (especially with warships) and allowing the owner of that territory to defend themselves without incurring diplomatic repercussions.
ALSO (and this one is really simple): There really needs to be some way to click on a starbase and see exactly which modules are still available to build there without having to send a constructor there (often to find there is nothing there you want to build and forcing you to waste more time sending that constructor somewhere else).
Hmm, I like both ideas... not sure about the ease of implementation though.
side note - Just started playing this game again after a year or so hiatus.. hadn't really perused the forums much prior to this, but am learning so much more about the game and can't wait to get full blown back into it... the recent hiatus was a result of my first mmo addiction (Lotro).
I played LoTRO for a while too, but quit several months before they released the first expansion. The problem with MMOs for me is that they all suffer from the same end-game problems: endless re-running of the same few instances dujour requiring huge groups of people (usually involving a lot of wasted time waiting around for everyone to get organized) for the slimest hope of geting an insignificant upgrade to a single piece of equipment for every 20 or so hours of time invested not having very much fun (after having done the same instances 10-30+ times already).
I love good MMOs during the levelling up process because I am constantly exploring new content, but after that they begin to feel more like a job (that you have to pay for the priviledge of having instead of being paid for your time) instead of a game. LOL
Your idea about the game having borders isn't really new, but it's still worth mentioning. I too would've liked to see something like this -- IMO, other races' ships shouldn't be able to enter your territory unless they've either declared war on you or have secured rights of passage from you (freighters being the exception to the rule).
Unfortunately, Brad (Frogboy/Draginol) has previously stated that such a feature would have to wait until GalCiv 3.
I think a border system like Civ IV's should definitely be implemented in GalCiv III...
I agree. I would love to see both of those ideas go into GC III.
Both would be awesome idea number two is simple enough, an update tweak would probably be all ya need.
and the border idea is pretty simple. You can set up a specified route through your territory and leaving that route automatically incurs an act of war on the part of the offender. that sound good?
Hello all. I am very new to posting any messages. In fact this will be my first. I was just wondering if anyone has heard if and when GalCiv III might be developed? I have not read anything yet that there is a plan for GalCiv III.
I'd love to see both of those suggestions, but we'll have to wait for GC3 for the first one. The way "borders" work at the moment, your planets can lie within someone else's territory. That would suck if they said you can't use their space, lol.
@regguy: I dont know of an acutal date but there for sure is going to be a third installement. We'll have ot wait a couple of years perhaps but im sure the wait will be worthwhile.
2nd idea... FTW!!! I want it I hate it when I only know whats already on the SB, not whats available. First one... also very nice.
I love the fact that you can colonize planets within someone else's borders. That's the main reason I research the extreme colonization techs, so I can establish a beachhead behind enemy lines.
