What games did you run across in a dollar bin? Download from Gamers Gate for 50 cents? Have a friend give it to you because they were simply done with it?
How many of you looked at those games and thought "This is going to be the biggest waste of time.....period .
Then to your surprise BAM! It is the most entertaining game you have played in a while.
What games would those be?
For me it is :
Sins of a Solar Empire - Bought it as a whim from Walmart. I was convinced it was going to be bad but I had nothing to lose. I was very wrong.
American Conquest - I bought this from Target for 10 bucks for a Christmas gift for a friend. I was meant to be a gag/joke gift but after we both played it (ignoring the bugs and flaws of the game) it was really not that bad at all. Especially for the price.
Diablo 2 - Even after not playing it for years I went back to it to get a friend of mine into it. I had completely forgotton how great of a game it was. I can remember now how addicting it all was.

Best bargains of all time? Two old adventure games.
Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender -- full of humor and some interesting puzzles. This PC game came on 10 5.25" floppies... LOL.
Callahan's Crosstime Saloon -- derived from Spider Robinson's fictional (or are they?) stories... oh, the puns! Lots of good puzzles.
Heroes of Might and Magic 5
I played one of the infamous early betas which were horrible. But the final build was actually quite good and definitely a surprise. I had it for a while from... "questionable sources" but yesterday I ponied up and bought it for 10 bucks on Steam hehe.
About 5 years ago, I picked up Warcraft II for $0.69 (on a tax-free weekend, no less). It was an old game, even then, but still f*ing awesome.
Europa Universalis III. I never thought that game would eat so much of my time.
And Sins, i knew it was good, but the replayability is awesome.
Gothic. I paid a grand total of five Irish punts for it, which is about seven or eight US dollars in today's money, and I wasn't expecting much. If I'd know how good it was going to be I would have happily paid fifty punts.
Lords of the Realm II.
Picked it up for something like $17-18.00 at Target of all places -- with the full box, manual, and everything! It was the first turn-based strategy game I'd ever played. I was hooked after that!
The Witcher

Guild Wars. By far the best game i EVER play.
You cant get a better online game for that price.

I actually followed ORB from fairly early on in its development, and I wish it had stayed more true to what its original goals were--solar system-sized maps, about half an hour for a fast ship to cross without using the jump dealio, resource asteroids that orbited things (so you didn't really have defined territory), and so on. Of course, it ended up being only a little better than a Homeworld clone.
And I'll second (third? n-ordinal?) the sentiments about Outpost 2. Those were good days.
Perimeter; Picked it up for 4.99 I think. After applying the officially released no-DVD patch and removing its Starforce, turned out to be one of the most unique RTSs I've played.
Another vote for Europa Universalis III. Sadly, Paradox games hit the bargain bin pretty fast here in the U.S. I picked up the complete edition for around $15.
Just reappearing to point out that a fair few of the posts on here mention CRPG's. Neverwinter, BG and well pretty much the stable of old Bioware games. Yet when you compare Neverwinter 1 to it's sibbling you can see the story being degraded for 'flash' (IMHO as always). Is anyone still doing story driven CRPG's at the same level as Bioware do? Whilst I'm eagre to play Dragon Age (and have been for many years now) their recent aquisition by EA makes me instantly dubious about the game.

i bought those 3 at a store for €5 when i was around 7 years old
you could choose your own chassis and place guns on them...
i didnt understand tough, i kept making FAKE tanks cuase those were the only tanks with guns on them.... but ofcourse they were FAKE.. dummy tanks they dont shoot and are for distraction... guess i was to young to understand FAKE was something fake, and not some kind of code-word.. F.A.K.E.
after i tried it a few years later i suddenly saw the link of the tank being a FAKE.... and i loved the game after it... still do.. only dont play it as much as i used to
Great choice. One of my personal top ten games. Got it day it came out(base game) so paid full price, though I did get the Expansions(Technically sequels) for cheap. Still play once in a while as well
The most recent greatest find for me was Dominions_3 !
Huge Maps, Huge List of Spells, Up to 20+ Opponents (Human or AI) {70+ Opponents with a mod}, Over 2000+ units, 70+ unique nations, 300_Page HardCopy Manual, Long History of Updates providing new content, and great gameplay depth.
Make sure your first game is on a big map with few AI players so you have time to feel comfortable learning the game... because having lots of AI players on a small map will get you squashed for beginners.
NOLF! Quality game. Mate got that bundled with a graphics card. He recommended it to me and leant me the disk, and I almost didn't install it. Every game he's recommended to me has been awfull. Was just very very bored and popped it in the tray. Superb game. Great story, funny and a solid shooter. Austin Powers style spy thing with a female lead and explosive lipsticks. Dunno if you played it online, but had a really good community. NOLF2 - that was a real let down.
Gal Civ was another what the hell moment. Disciples2 was another. Another one that did it for me was StarTopia - not normally a Sims fan, but that was actually a really nice suprise. Its a sim with humour - its dated - but still can raise a smile if I replay it.
I agree, NOLF2 was a very, very big disapointment for me too. I thought Monolith was the best co in the gaming industry (back in 2000). They had created NOLF (2000) and AvP2 (2001), I was sure they could not go wrong with NOLF2 (2002). In 2005 I bought F.E.A.R. thinking that maybe thing would be different, it turned out to be an OK game. It starts well but seems to have no story/direction from middle to end. A few weeks ago I also bought F.E.A.R. 2, and let me tell you; stay away from another bad game. Monolith seems to have lost their edge, maybe its time for them to bring new blood in the co. On the bright side we still have NOLF & AVP2; the 2 best FPS ever made for the PC.
