The Empire: Total War demo is out now on steam
I ran good on my system which consisted of a Geforce 8800 GT 512MB and Core 2 Duo E8400 with Vista64.
I have had it lockup on completion of the ground battle training and trying to exit standard ground battle. *sigh* Still though I really like this game. Word of warning.... close combat with teh Americans is suicide.
Sea battles are great, although I think the ships sails flutter too much when shot. I love how everyone jumps overboard when capturing a ship. Too bad no sharks :
The game reminds me of a cross between Imperial Glory and Age of Sail 2 (minus the bugs for AoS2).

Age of Sail 2:
One thing that struck me though is that it seemed like the other game had a little more control detail but since it has been a long time maybe I am just remembering it wrong.
BTW. I picked AoS2 over the sea battles in IG becuase the AoS2 had deeper controls.

The demo takes AGES to load on my system (Q6600, 8GB, 3870X2 and Vista 64 Ultimate). It also seems to be unable to handle alt-tab.
If this is indicative of the real game, I won't be buying it, even though I was strongly considering it.
well ca always releases crappy demos, so there is not too much to worry about. the mediveal 2 demo for example was atrocious.
Hmm, perhaps because of 64-bit? Can't imagine why though. It didn't take over a minute for me and I'm same processor, half the RAM and on 32bit. (With 9600 OC)
Sounds like fun! Although I like some parts of Sid's Pirates, I need something more tactical
I hope Empire is going to be more polished then the last game MTW II was a bug fest and was never fully fixed. They even released the Demo for MTW II with a scripted battle to trick us into thinking the Ai was far better than it actually was in the retail version. Downloading the demo now il ignore the Ai this time and see if it crashes as much as MTW II before it got the 6 month later patch.
I own every TW game. I played and loved every one except ROME (didn't like ROME TW for some reason) and never had any bug-issues at all with any of the TW but ROME!
Medieval II has been on my PC ever since it's release in 2006 and thats the longest running PC game-install on my PC to date! hehe
Maybe, EMPIRE will kick Medieval II from it's place on the throne of my PC but we'll see. I actually liked the gameplay of Medieval(one) better than Medieval II...
I was blown away by Empire. The demo runs fairly well on my system, but UI constantly flickers. Is it true you have to use Steam to play the box version of Empire?
Yes and no. You need to register the game with Steam the first time you fire it up. After that, however, you can run the game while keeping Steam in Offline Mode. (Of course, for patches/updates, you'll need to run Steam in regular mode again....)
There are many great features available to you once you register, including:
