Just a quick couple of things that I have noted regarding starbases in star grav-wells.. and some questions.
First, I have noted that they don't receive the antimatter bonus, does this make sense? It seems only appropriate should receive the same bonunses as all the ships which surround them (same applies to asteroid belts and nebulae).
Second, does anyone know if there is a cap on the number of starbases you can place in a star's gravity well? I have definitely placed 4 in before (maybe more, cannot recall), and have no reason as of yet to think there is any cap at all.. I don't necessarily mind it.... though it doesn't make a great deal of sense that you could have 20 starbases placed side-by-side, but when you go to place them in a planet's grav well there is 'not enough space' to place two at opposite ends of the grav-well. Don't get me wrong, I love placing a few advent SB's side-by-side at important stars in order to have culture spread, swarms of fighters, and a fully upgraded battlestation all at a key trade route.. but maybe a little justification for this capacity is in order, if not some limitations.
Finally, from a bigger view to making stars more strategically important: I think it may be nice for phaze lanes to be slightly narrowed (and their entrances being more visibly demarkated) at star-wells IN PARTICULAR, in order to accentuate the strategic benefit of placing starbases in their well... if they had more power to police movement routes within stars I think they would far more often be the site of wicked show-downs. At present, AI never go for your SB's in these wells, and perhaps nor should they bother, as they can get around them entirely too easily just by travelling a wee little bit.
Look forward to thoughts and comments..
I didn't know you could put any more than 1 SB in a stars well. In fact I've never tried. You mentioned that there wasn't enough space to get 2 in a planets well, well I'm sure your not supposed to. Only 1 per faction per gravity well. I thought stars were the same.
I'm going to go try this now!
Yep! your right ! thanks for pointing this out. It certainly makes for deffending a star system alot more powerful, maybee to powerful. Not only does an invading fleet have to get rid of 1 SB before they can leave that GW. without incuring full anti mater loss/30% hull damage, but perhaps multiple SB's. To me though that certainly makes the fire power of the anti structure cruises seem alot more balanced than I had previously thought.
ya. definitely at least 4 per person at a star (at least). I actually like multiple-bases in that context, because it allows you to specialize each (say, if you have three and place them side-by-side: each with trade port upgrade, each with armour upgrades, one with culture upgrades, one with weapons upgrades, one with squad upgrades [assuming you are advent] -- if all are within the same little piece of space, this equals out to one wicked star-fort that your enemies will be truly hard-pressed to knock down if they allow its establishment). But ya, maybe this is an oversight, I hope not... though I don't know I agree with infinite bases either!
Yes I agree any more than 4 would just be to many. Likewise I hope its not an oversite.
I'm going to now try and see just how many it is possible to build there.
Ok just tried to build a 5th, but it wouldn't let me. Looks like 4 is the max. This is good Yaay!
Interesting. You didn't happen to note how many phaze lanes there were going to the star did you? Maybe the max is determined by the number of lanes?
Just a guess at some justification...
yes there were 4 to planets, and 3 other star systems on the map.
have you been able to build more?
wow 4 per star that is really cool i never tried adding more than 1.
I haven't been able to build more, I believe.. though my memory may be failing me -- I love building sb's at stars..
I am playing Vasari and currently have 3 starbases at my home star, 2 at one of the enemy stars, 2 st the star of an empty system and am about to build 1 at my other enemy's star. I like the multiple bases thing because I can upgrade each to maximum squadron capacity and then, not only do I have permanent line of sight to all stars, but anything that comes into the gravity well is vaporized by my 14 squads of bombers and 14 squads of fighters!
Samurye.
I'll use the wormholes then I think!!! Will be MUCH safer!!!
I don't play on maps with Wormholes! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
The number of starbases for stars is set in each of the 4 star-types .entity files close to the bottom: here is what the Blue star has:
maxStarBaseCountPerPlayer 4maxSpaceMineCountPerPlayer 500
Here's what a terran planet type has:
maxStarBaseCountPerPlayer 1maxSpaceMineCountPerPlayer 150
of course the first thing I did after getting entrenchment 2.0 was up every planet to 2 starbases(for coverage of both sides ) , enable movement to all starbases, and reduced the mine count to 50 on all planets/stars! (mines are so irritating)
On the subject of wormholes, since vasari SBs can move, can they go through wormholes?
I never noticed this. A 4 v 4(Vasari vs TEC/Advent) SB fight would be freaking amazing.
No, I tried. They can't go through wormholes.
I had no idea that you could bout more than one SB at a star! That is awesome! I never bothered putting one their before, because just one on a star doesn't really give you much coverage. But now it might be worth it.
What program is used to open the files so you read them and edit them?
i tried notepad and it made no sense to me.
Ok thanks for the tip i will try.
Kyroge! *Gasp* We have found you at last!
I was missing? I wasn't aware of that.
You dissapeared from the Apocalypse thread and I wondered what you were doing. Stil planning to destroy the planet?
Well, the apocalypse thread kind of died out... but yes, I am still planning to destoy the planet. I've just been preoccupied with other things. Beta testing Entrenchment, modding, real life, etc. Although I have been posting on the forums quite a bit... I guess you just haven't seen any of those threads.
Has the reference files been updated to include SB's files? Or do you have to convert from binary somehow?
Hmmm....I wonder if the phasejump destabalization can stack.......with 4 (The max, check in the beta 2.0 changes) that would be 120% hull loss to every ship that passes through the sun......................................
Well I think it does'nt stack to 120% at least, I have still had ships get through.
It's a good question though, as to whether it does stack at all. I'll try to see what a ships hull points are right before it jumps and then again when it comes out. This should give us an idea.
Could take awile though, not many get through at the moment, at least to a system that I own, and the AI don't seem to keen on building any SB'S in a star's GW.
OK! just followed a Tec. SB constructer out from a star I had 4 Vasari SB's in. 1875 hull points when it left 1487 when it came out of phase jump = 21%. They must heal on the jurney.
One thing I have been wondering, if ships use antimatter when traveling through phase space, how can they even jump if they've copped a full loss of antimatter from a SB?
