Okay, so back in the day I purchased all the crap needed for a Sins Ladder/Tournament website, and before I got a chance to use it I lost interest in Sins of a Solar Empire (the patches screwed competitive play, etc). And since GE is no longer around, I'm just going to give this site (fully functional) to a group of persons who has the time/dedication/etc to run it.
No more posting your wins/losses on the forums and having the other team argue about results. You set up some rules, post those rules, and have admins and refs that determine the final outcome. And the scoreboard doesnt lie

Let me know guys, it has potential.
Well, Ive been trying to get some kind of competive play going. But even my simple attempts are lacking true intrest. Ive had a few people join but thats it. Wouldnt mind running it if you dont want too. Maybe it will help with the intrest.
Your site has potential - sure...
But game hasn't unfortunately...
Not until it is tweaked and "expanded" with competitive game modes which most probably is never going to happen
You can all forget about competitive games as long as single round could potentially last for hours...
Once we get at least single game mode which guaranties end result within 45 minutes or less - we can talk about real online presence and ladders... Till then just relax and enjoy the game
that would be amazing... supposing it was possible to finish a game with a mini dump or DC... but yeah i cant wait to see how that goes
I think 1v1 and 2v2 ladders could be viable right now if it were properly advertised and if individual clans would host multiple teams. (A clan with 8 active members could form four separate teams). Once enough first movers join to where it would have "critical mass", other less-involved players and clans would become interested. One benefit of starting with 2v2 for teams is that it's so much easier for a team to show up when only four people need to coordinate and fewer players per team means more teams can be formed.
I think that unless ICO implements a ranking / tracking system from within the launcher, this will be a hard sell. I have seen very little evidence that most players want to play for rank. In fact, it is painfully hard to get a game together where one team is perceived as being better than another. Many people do not seem interested in clan matches, unless they are confident that their clan or team is going to win. There are a few of us who are willing to take handicaps just to get a game going, but it can be frustrating. So I would be pretty amazed if the online community bought into a ladder that required any effort on their part.
Actually, I think the difficulty in balancing teams has led to the anti-ranking system and smurfing in general. There is so much drama over team balance and team creation for veteran players that I think many of them just smurf rather than deal with it. I know it is a big bummer for me to spend 30 minutes with people fighting over teams...and then have someone drop 30 seconds into the game so teams have to be reformed.
I would actually love it if there were a ranking system from within ICO because you could identify smurfs pretty quickly, their low games played stats would still propel them up the ladder as opposed to someone with 50 wins with their buddy vs the AI, but was useless at PvP so their few losses against real people would drag them down and rank them appropriately.
I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "ladder" in that post Cykur; I assume it's a proxy for "player rank".
Anyway, whoever ends up managing that site, I'd be all for a 1v1 and 2v2 ladder though I can't say I do much 1v1 at all. If we could find 20 people who wanted to play 1v1 then I'd say a 1v1 ladder was doable and would start to become interesting, and likewise if we could find 40 people who'd want to play a 2v2 then we could have 20 teams on the ladder.
I guess one obstacle is that I've seen a bunch of regular players who I don't recognize on the forums or who almost never read it. Would they be willing to go out of their way to register at a ladder site and play on a ladder?
I use the word "rank" like..5 times, and "ladder" 3 times. How can we not be talking about the same thing??? ...unless I'm just really confused. Doesn't rank determine placement on a ladder????
And yes, good luck getting everyone to sign on...that is why I was saying it would have to be built into ICO to have any significance. Kind of like rankings on Blizzard.net for example, not that I have played one of their games in many years, so maybe it is different there too.
What is the purpose to playing on a ladder if not everyone competes, of if someone can just go off the grid and hide their skill with a smurf. Casual players have no incentive, and skilled players don't have much incentive when they realize that playing under a recognized high ranked name means they are likely to get handicapped.
I'm still wondering if we're talking about the same thing. A ladder is a league where wins and losses in formal clan matches are reported. The ladder website keeps track of match results and moves teams up and down the ladder accordingly. It would have nothing to do with your ICO record. Here's an example of what a ladder looks like:
