Greetings, I purchased and activated DeskScapes so I could run Dreams on my legal Vista Business. As the title says, problem is that Business version doesnt have MPEG2 codec - which kinda ruins the purpose of DeskScapes since, as I can see, most of the Dreams are coded in MPEG.
The question is simple - where do I get compatible codec ( havent solved codec problem since I started using VLC as my player, so kinda lost the track of them ), or at least which codec can also be played with DeskScapes, so I could transcode the Dream video into it?
I tried installing MPEG2 decoders from different codec packs, I installed trial version of PowerDVD 8, then tried 7, even tried adding and registering MS MPEG2 codec files from Ultimate. Registration fails for no obious reason ( says it cant load the file since it cannot be found - which is ridiculous, the file is on the path specified ), so Im really out of options that came to my mind.
Business 32 or 64 bit?
64. Codec files are from 64b Ultimate. I tried registering them with regsvr32 command, and it failed. But since I deal with 64b system, registration command could be different. Any idea if this is the case, pls?
I've yet to see a good (free) 64bit codec.
Google, along with trial and error, may be your best chance.
Check this thread out for a fix to your problem. Reply # 23. Note, this worked for the original poster, I have not tried these out so I can not guarantee that they work...use at your own risk.
Make sure to create a system restore point before installing any codec packs and only install one...never mix codec packs as it's a sure way to fubar your system. If you have installed any codecs previously, uninstall them before installing these
Thanks, guys, Im solving it with conversion to MPEG4, which plays just fine. Some quality loss can be seen, but most Dreams are in higher resolution than my screens res anyway, so no biggie. At least I dont have to uninstall another codec pack and install yet another.
Why can't stardock supply us with the codec's for each OS? When you pay for something it should work. I am having the same problem all of a sudden, had to wipe out my entire computer due to a corrupt file or something. It worked fine before but since the wipe I keep getting the nocodec msg.
Codecs are quite often proprietary and their commercial use can add substantially to the price of the software...
Something in the last Windows updates messed really messed this up. Most dreams that previously played fine are now "missing codecs". Windows 7 x64 supposedly comes with all codecs necessary according to Stardock. 75% of the dreams now do not work.
Too bad no-one knows which update it was. That's most likely the source of my problem as well.
Maybe K-lite codec pack will help
Windows Vista Codecs from www.shark007.net should have everything you need, there are also 64 bit addons from the same site. This package does not come with a player of any sort, just the relevant codecs you need. You can then associate them with your prefered player or juat have them sit on your system ready for use. Good luck
