I find myself very interested in Elemental, firsly because of the developer's reputation, and secondly because it seems like Heroes of Might & Magic.
But I find myself wondering what would be the point of a long time HoMM fan in purchasing this game?
My general impressions and read throughs of previews give me the idea that it is like MoM, but I don't find MoM all that different from the HoMM series.
I guess what I'm asking is what incentive do I have to branch out and give this a buy rather than gleefully sticking with the HoMM series.
Thanks in advanced for any advice.
PS: I love Sins of a solar empire and already purchased demigod, but those are both so different to me.
I agree and this can be experienced within AoW:SM as well. It was also annoying how all players could view your battles. Ideally when one human player is fighting someone or something else the other human players should be allowed to view and adjust their towns, resources, units and marching positions.
How could you have a hard time imagining it? You just described an example of exactly that in Titan... And to name yet another example (or two), HoMM and AoW. Both are strategic multi-player games with plenty of interaction during battles. And yeah, waiting for other players to fight their battles can be a real pain. But personally, I like tactical combat enough that I'm willing to wait for them
Continous turns (perhaps they mean simultanous turns like in Age of Wonders?) are superior to turnbased turns for multiplayer and allows the game to flow better.
Feels like it's the future. Like when I played KotOR and immidietly thought it better then Ice Wind Dale and Baldurs Gate games.
I don't think the word 'superior' really applies to preference, though it does minimize time. There are other benifits to the other methods.
I like non-continous turns when there are like 2 players, or for single player games in most similar games. However, I'd be interested to see how it is in this game though, just because we have have that fallout/X-com style dungeon exploration. Even with continous turns, it would be pretty rough if those are expansive enough. Even continous turns might start to take a long time unless its somehow a party dungeon.
Y'all are thoroughly reinforcing my desire to see single-player mode have (at least the option for) 'true' turn-based tactical combat. I almost certainly will try the multiplayer stuff, but I still have no idea if it will hold my interest. But I guess I'm especially weird, even for a crowd like this one, because I'm far more likely to be put off by required click-fits than I would be by required waiting periods. I never was very good at the card game bridge, but I believe that the dummy hand is a brilliant innovation for grownups playing a game. It means there's always someone available to make a new pitcher of martinis.
I should have wrote "... a strategic multi-player computer game...". While I love Titan, because of the battle downtime, the games can be uber-long and so I only play it about once per year. 15 years ago, we would play several games a day that lasted "only" 4 hours each on average. But that was only because we knew how to quickly come to arrangements about the non-critical battles. That can only be done if players understand the game very well and are willing to be reasonable. I do not see that happening in a strategic multiplayer computer game. One bad apple who insists on playing out every little minor battle can make the game take 10% longer.
I never played HoMM and AoW multi-player. (I did play MOM multiplayer back in college, but I lost those brain cells I believe.) How would a game play out that is strategic, turn-based, yet has interactive battles? Would I need to be available for 16 straight hours to play the game? Would you play 1 turn per day and fight your battles at 2200 GMT each evening? Am I just unreasonable? Please set me straight, because otherwise I guess I would usualy play E:WOM single-player, and only rarely multi-player. Perhaps I haven't read enough about the game and am missing some concept. Note that my favorite TBS multiplayer experiences were with Stars! with turns generated once or twice per day. (The customization options for races were really cool, and partner games could be great fun.)
Regarding Titan. A friend of mine had his wife report him missing because she didn't realize he was still playing a board game 2 days later. This was before cell phones. Not too surprising that he got divorced eventually!
Can't wait to play you guys/gals! Just might have to take vacation days to play.
Well, especially when all players involved are pretty experienced and good players, battles don't take that long. They know what they want and don't have to sit there formulating a plan - once they see the battlefield they can almost instantly come up with a strategy and go from there. Unless we're talking huge, end-game battles here, they rarely took more than 5 or 10 minutes (player v player). Player v Monster battles are obviously faster. So yes, if you're playing on a large map your game is going to take a very long time to play. But that's true even if you play a large map in singleplayer, even if you autoresolve all combat. If you want a relatively quick multiplayer game, the trick is to player on a pretty small map with settings conducive to a quick end.
That said, multiplayer turn-based strategy matches are inherently longer than FPS or RTS ones, for obviously reasons. If you only have an hour to play, then either find someone willing to play a short match on a tiny map, or go play a few turns in your latest single-player endeavour. Multiplayer TBS games will never have as many active participants as real-time games. You have to wait for other players, and the games themselves take a long time to complete, and I think the demographic that is more likely to play Elemental is probably less interested in multiplayer.
Yep, I'm looking forward to finally having a proper chance to play at least these early games(missed them entirely back in the day) via GoG for a low price. I think Steam has some sort of combo pack for HoMM V though.
