When can we expect a version of ObjectDock for VIsta-64 (specifically tray and start menu support)>?
You see, I wish I could say that they will not get my $19.99 but they've already gotten it. The sad thing was, I bought the software when it actually worked on my computer, before impulse! Luckily there are still copies of the SDC installer floating around so I could still use the software.
abustama's link (#26) was the mirror I used, working like a charm now.
So glad that I decided to browse the forums before dropping $20 on this software.
Just to share the perspective of a total outsider to your community...
I came across the free version of ObjectDock via another website (Lifehacker.com, I think). Downloaded and installed it on my 64-bit Vista system and really liked it, but I really wanted to completely replace the Windows taskbar. Seeing the links to "learn more about ObjectDock Plus", I checked it out and saw that it would do exactly what I wanted.
What I didn't see (although of course I see it now that it's been pointed out) was the "32-bit" part of the system requirements. My current PC is only a few months old; I picked it up at Best Buy. Every Windows system I looked at was running 64bit Vista, and while I was initially apprehensive about the dreaded Vista upgrade, not a single piece of software that I run has had problems making the transition from XP.
Since I've already been running the free version of ObjectDock without issue, I wouldn't have even thought to check the requirements for the Plus version. And I'd expect software such as this, aimed at the enthusiast market, would support current versions of windows. I don't know what made me visit the forums before purchasing - maybe just the present economic climate makes me a bit more cautious with my dollars - but I'm glad I did.
Needless to say, I won't be purchasing the Plus version since it doesn't support my OS. Fair enough. However, after reading through a dozen or so threads here, I'm not likely to purchase it in the future either. Surely this could have been handled better if customer service were really a priority? When I installed the free version on my 64 bit OS, I didn't see any warnings about not meeting system requirements. The free version happily displayed enticements to upgrade to Plus without noting my OS was unsupported.
What would have brought me back to purchase a version that supports my OS? How about a very clear message on the Plus page stating that "64bit OS support is coming soon - enter your email address to be notified when it's released"? I'd have signed up for a notification - I like the free version and just wanted to add my system tray and start menu to the dock.
Fortunately, I came to the forums first, and what I found is the reason I'm not likely to become a customer in the future: angry (and apparently long-suffering) users, dismissive staff (occasionally bordering on hostile), and workarounds that seem to rely on unsupported betas obtained by installing outdated software updaters available only on warez sites? Suddenly the woeful Windows taskbar doesn't seem so bad
I'm not sure why I've even bothered to create an account just to post this, but I felt compelled to share my thoughts. As a fellow business owner, I'd love to have users that are as passionate about my products as the users here seem to be. These don't seem to be the ravings of a few disgruntled users, but rather the pleas of a user base that has allowed this product to become a vital part of their daily lives, and it pains them not to be able to use it on their current systems.
A little honesty regarding future updates would probably go a long way towards keeping that user base happy. Even better would be some sort of official workaround, or perhaps a beta fix for those on 64bit systems. At any rate, I hope the people behind this product realize that the users making so much noise on these forums are probably some of the biggest fans of their software. A passionate user base is a great thing to have, but those same people are going to hold your feet to the fire if they feel you're not meeting their expectations. And it's a problem many companies would love to have.
Best of luck.
@ savedmymoney:
If the only thing you're concerned about is the system tray working in Vista 64bit, there is a fix for that (read the first page of this thread). I had it working just fine on my Vista 64-bit system. Start Menu worked just fine too. I must admit though, my system now has Windows 7 beta on it and I find myself in love with the new taskbar. In my own opinion it has a lot more functionality to it once you know and get used to what it does. But OD is still my friend when it comes to being an application launcher
@mikedawwg
He knew of the fix, he just didn't like the method needed to obtain the said fix. What he's saying sounds eerily familiar to what I was getting chewed out for, for the sake of pointing out that I'm not the only one that feels this way (As opposed to trolling/fuelling fires/whatever you want to call it).
Anyway I couldn't care less about Stardocks state of affairs and customer service, as long as the product I purchased isn't unfit for its' purpose (Which, mind you is a COMPLETELY valid reason to demand a refund.. at least as far as Australian trade laws are concerned)
Ah I didn't notice the mention of having to go to a warez site, I did have to use SCD, but I most certainly didn't need to get it at a warez site... I got it from this post: https://forums.stardock.com/342499 in reply #2. It was a breeze to install then. For me anyway...
I agree, I could care less as long as what I got works for me. As I said, it worked fine in Vista 64 after downloading the beta version, and I could be very wrong in saying this but I don't think there's really any other dock program that has native system tray support, other than having to use a docklet to which only fills up one docking space, which could look ugly if you have a lot of icons... again, correct me if I'm wrong as I very well could be.
But no matter, just go with what works best for you, there's no rule that everyone has to do it one way and not the other.
Okay, so I performed the "fix" described on page one, and it worked great... that is, until I shut down for the night and started my computer back up. After that, the start menu still works, but the systray is MIA... the dock is there, no error message, but no icons either.
I'm running the copy of Vista Home Premium that came with my laptop (an AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-72 with 4gigs RAM), any ideas on what's going wrong or a possible fix? I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling yet again to no avail.
Hello,
I have vista 64. I just "discovered" OD and like it very much (what little I've learned so far). I tried the fix from page one, but the only OD I see in SDC is the "current" version (1.9.037) and no betas (yes I have the "show betas" box checked) and that is in the "free stuff" folder, not "misc". Am I dong something wrong, or has the beta been totally pulled?
thanx
This only applies to ObjectDock Plus, not to the free version.
If you paid for the plus version and do not see it in the Misc folder, then you need to register it in Stardock Central (don't remember the exact place it is in the options, but there should be a dropdown with ObjectDock Plus, CursorXP, Aquarium Desktop and a few other applications. Select ObjectDock Plus, copy&paste your serial number (you can get it from Impulse or from the email with all your registrations) and click "Register". This should make ObjectDock Plus appear inside the Misc section.
Does anybody know why they choose not to publish that version on Impulse? Is there some showstopper bug or something? Cause last time I checked build 538u was right there in Impulse, they only have to push a button to make it public.
Hi,
I'm newi(ish) to ObjectDock and like it a lot. I have it running on my Windows 7 RC1 (Build 7100) 64 bit laptop. All works well, apart from the missing system tray. I got round the start menu issue by using another docklet I found on WinCustomize and that all works fine. I would like to get the beta version of ObjectDock+ ( I have bought it) but would prefer to benefit from other people's work and time ! PLease would someone send me the beta so I can install it without all the unistalling of Impulse, getting SDC etc, etc ?
I can send on my email address to someone who is feeling helpful
Many thanks
Sorry rege0039, but my instructions on page 1 of this thread are the only way to pull it all together. It only takes a few minutes in toto for registered users of the software.
OK. I will go for that !
Is it right that the only site to get SDC from is a warez one ? I have tried the others mentioned in th thread but they just re-direct to an impulse download.
Come on Stardock, why can't you just give us the beta as an easy download ? 64 bit is hardly new now !!!
Impulse is really not that bad. In fact, I love it! A lot of people give it a bad rap for some reason, but it is a really useful tool for keeping track of all your Stardock software--MUCH better than SDC.
You oughtta give it a try! They did, after all, release Impulse to replace SDC.
I to have Vista Ultimate x64, and it works just fine för me with systray and start menu.
I downloaded it throu Impulse and it was up running without any problems
I run Object dock plus on Windows 7 RC-1 64 bit with no problems I only wish they would get ICON Packager up and running for 64 bit
Same here. I just began running W7x64. It's great, but no IconPackager.
But which version of ObjectDock+ are you running and where/how did you get them ?
I love Windows 7, am delighted to be running 64bit and like Object Dock+ I would just like to get them all working together.
Is there no other way to get SDC as I can't get Impulse to show me the beta version that others have mentioned is 64bit compatible.
I am running Version 1.90 Plus; Build 535u. This is the most current version from Impulse.
Click on the Impulse orb at the upper-left of the window. Then check the "Show pre-release versions" checkbox.
All very strange as I have the same version as you and already ticked the box in Impulse for pre-release and beta versions, but I can't get the system tray to work - there is simply no option to add it to a dock and Impulse offers no update from what I am running.
Ahh, that's because this version of OD+ does not support system tray functionality on 64-bit systems. Trust me, I feel your pain. I also run W7 64-bit, and ran Vista Ultimate 64-bit for some time.
ObjectDock 2.0 will be fully functional on 64-bit systems. See this thread: https://forums.wincustomize.com/354618
shame i didnt read this before purchasing, i assumed because the free version worked so well in vista 64 bit there certainly couldnt be a issue with the version i was paying for. that being said i have a diffrent issue, i followed the intructions to the letter on page one , the beta shows for me in SDC and i can install it just fine but once i click on OD+ in the start menu i get nothing......it does absolutly nothing yet when i open up the task manager it shows object dock as running. so basicly i cant use OD+ AT ALL...... anyone have a fix for this problem and any word when a version that actualy works will be available?
Never heard of that one. Do you have multiple monitors? What version of OD+ do you have?
Consider downloading it from Impulse.
Oh, trust me, it works quite well. I've used it hapily on Vista 64-bit for quite some time. Now I'm running it on Win7.
But 2.0 is coming out sometime soon. See the link in reply #70.
im using the beta that the instructions in this thread told me too, the only one that shows as a beta in the SDC and also tried the newest one available through impulse but i get the same thing with each, try to start it, i get the spinning cursor like its trying to do something then it just stops but when i open task manager it shows object dock as running and if i hit the exe again it starts running another instance of objectdock in the task manager but nothing on my screen. i went back to try the free version to make sure i didnt mess up on my end and the free version works just fine. im using a single monitor on a SLI setup but i tried disabling SLI and i still get the same problem. Im just a little bit ticked here that the free version works flawlessly but i cant even get the version i paid for to open.
Aha! I bet I know what it is...
Uninstall both the free version and the plus version. Then reinstall the plus version. Problems occur when trying to run plus on top of free. Just as a safety procedure, try disabling your anti-virus while you are installing plus the second time.
Lets hope they continue doing improvements. As it is, tehre are alternatives to the 'startmenu' and even the systray problems of objectdock.
I decided to either dump objectdock or find alternatives for at least the above two
Found vistatartmenu that gives me a very nice alternative and works..and im using the icon that objectdock had for startmenu.
IM now lookign for systray alterantives to add aas a docklet
Note Im vista 64 and would rather dump objectdock than go back to 32bit.
Now when i have a app, folder, etc open it does show it on the dock.
But what about various systray items (like my instant msg and other).
In order to pull them up, i have to keep the windows taskbar along with this.
Seriously doubt that I will buy plus till they make it a 'true' alternative.
A true alternative must be fully usuable as a replacement.. not just 80%.
As it is, my employer was looking at Stardock to do similar to the 'Delldock' along with other. But they are not impressed.
Especially per the fact that the startmenu on objectdock doesnt work for 64bit while there are dozens of 'startmenu' replacements out there.
In my own case, using the same icon, im pulling up a rather decent startmenu alternative. But I would prefer the actual windows start menu or similar.
