I was thinking, how about a dynamic quest/mission system in addition to the one related to the map? If one player takes certain relics or artifacts that could give him a bonus, other players could try to steal them. I'm not sure how the normal quests are set up, however this could be done in a dungeon like fashion where each faction has their national treasury (and possibly can set up defenses to protect it) and the others can try and breach those defenses.
Man, that makes me want to play dungeon keeper.... If only they would make a sequal to that game *shakes a fist at EA for undoing bullfrog*
so do you mean something separate from the regular map screen? Perhaps something you could do why waiting for other players to do during long multi-player games (it takes a long times for gamel like HoMM and Civ 4)
Well, since questing (and dungeons) are supposed to be part of the map, why not do something similar as player creations in-game to protect what is valuable to each other from those who would steal it? I mean if the player is going to be a physical unit on the map, why not his treasury and magical item inventory as well? And if his treasury and magical item inventory are on the map, others will want to take it (enter their heroes adventuring for riches), so the player will want to devise ways to protect it.
What would be awesome would be the ability to create dungeons. You place some armies, some creatures you'ce created, some traps, maybe even some events ...
Anyway, the "steal their tresaue" thing is already in ... you can already try to steal ennemy items. Just kill them
the devs talked about the streaming custom content in the game. It would be awesome to be able to add some things that enhance the gameplay (and not just new technologies)
That seems to be fundamentally different from what lwarmonger suggested. Given that the current plan is to have resource flows packaged in specific, vulnerable map units, I think it is a swell idea to make your faction's treasury work the same way, and any stash of unassigned magic items you might have. Depending on how complex you can make your economy, there could be another interesting set of Big Decisions based on keeping your treasury well-secured and keeping enough coins in easy range of where you want to spend them.
And I really, really like the idea of being able to be a stupid channeler and go wandering off on some snark hunt only to come home and find you've been made penniless because you did not properly garrison the site of your treasury.
