Dear Stardock Support,
I uninstalled today the IconPackager version 4.10.172 from my PC, which runs a Microsoft Vista Home OS.
After the uninstallation of IP and reboot, I found that most of the icons of important applications like Google Chrome, Impulse, Outlook, Explorer etc are converted to a White Blank Icon (an icon shown when there is an unknown program type or something).
Additionally, the shortcuts pointing to these applications are also Blank. This on the startbar, desktop, start menu etc...
So I started searching for a solution how to uninstall Iconpackager correctly, which I could not find. The only possible resolution is to reinstall Icon Packager from Impulse, then, startup Icon Packager and Apply the default Windows Icons. Only this brings me back all the icons belong to the applications, both on the shortcuts and the .exe files.
How can I solve this problem, so that I can uninstall Iconpackager correctly?
Sven
there's your answer............Iconpackager is NOT made to "install > apply new icons > uninstall while keeping new icons" if you want to uninstall you must first apply the Default Windows icons
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I have taken the liberty and time out of my day to provide a detailed walk through on how to retrieve your long-lost icons. Many of you (by the hundreds) are suffering of the painful annoyance that comes with uninstalling IconPackager. Issue: When uninstalling IconPackager all or the majority of my icons go/are blank. See figure 1 Solution: Download and run the fix provided by Stardock Corp. [Figure 1] Solution Explained:
[Figure 2]
[Figure 3]
[Figure 4]
I hope my fix was helpful and you are able to utilize it. //Edit// I am simply going to chime in with this other fix. If the above fix does not work (which it should), another way to retrieve your icons back is by manually resetting them. This may be a tedious task, however it is still quicker and more effective then reformatting/system restore. To do this follow these simply steps:
You may think I missed a step and failed to desribe what you do when you are in the 'change icon' menu, however I did not. By default the icon will be there and already selected, therefor there is no need to select or change aynthing.
I wish I had never trialled Icon Packager. I was on day 1 of the trial install from download.com I reset to default iconstwice to make sure. After my reboot all my program icons on the desktop, quick launch, start menu and in explorer have the default white sheet of paper. I could not find a single way to uninstall as it was not showing in Your Uninstaller nor in Add/Remove programs. I read the above fix so I installed again on top of the current install in case it was faulty. Again I made sure default icons everywhere were appplied. I ran odnt_zapper.exe to remove/uninstall Icon Packager. None of my program icons were restored. I went to plan 2 to manually reset icons. If I have more than the one choice of icon it changes and stays but if it is like Mailwasher Pro and over half my programs there is only the one default icon and "changing" it does nothing. The icon is there in the change icon box and shows up on the tab top but click apply or ok and all I get is the single white page.
I am STUCK with all these missing icons riddled throughout any list. I tried deleting the shortcut and recreating -- nope! I tried deleting the icon cache and rebuilding it. Reboot and STILL have no program icons.
I hate to think what this program does to other vista users who buy it and find out it deletes the default icons for programs. I hope Stardock steps up to the responsibility and solves this problem.
I have several Stardock products and over 5 years. Never had a problem until now but I am well P#@$%@ off. My guess is that IP resets the default program icon to the white sheet of paper permanently - whether with a new package install or reverting to default icons.
I have been 6 hours all over the web looking for a fix with no luck. I was so sure this would help. BTW I also did 2 system restores to go back well before this but those program icons remain as the single white sheet of paper.
Well Stardock? What do I do? Even if I buy your product I still maintain the sheet of paper for all programs.
SOLUTION!!!!
I have been having the same issues described above, and like LadyAthena, no solution. I tried the above mentioned fix from GSFMrMoo1018 . No luck. Tried manually rebuilding icon cache. Nothing. Now I don't know why this is different, but I used Tune Up Utilities 2009 to solve this issue. Anyone having this issue can try this and hopefully it will work for you too. You can download a free trial of Tune Up and try this fix. Open Tune Up Utilities 2009. Select Tune up Styler. Select repair from the left panel. Click on repair icon cache. Windows will log you off. Log on again and your icons will be back to their original. No more blank paper. Like I said I've tried manually rebuilding my icon cache, but no joy. Using Tune Up Utilities 2009 worked. I'm not a tech guy, can't tell you why this is, but just thought I'd share my solution. Good luck.
Thanks for your fix, it worked. Now everyone needs to complain to stardock. SINCE VERSION 3 the razer tray icon for my mouse turns into a blank icon, they have carried this problem into version 4. WAY TO GO STARDOCK! How about TESTING your software next time before release? All this money spent to be "superior" to Windows default and it runs like crap and errors galore. Great.
I think you are out of luck on the testing issue because there are so many iterations. i have done 4 acronis restores in two weeks directly related to stardock software malfunctions and/or incapatabilty with vista 64. the errors seem random, some people with the same operating system don't have them. it must be difficult to design programs which interact as deeply as these do with multiple operating systems from xp to vista in 32 and 64 bit platforms as well as multiple versions and now we will soon have windows7 also. they recently sent me an oportunity to update object desktop at a discounted rate but i am no longer sure that i should with all the problems i have had. damn, and i love customization.
This issue has been around long enough that it would seem prudent for SD to put a warning dialog up when you go to uninstall IP insisting that you revert to the default Windows icons before proceeding with the uninstall. I'm no programmer, but seems like that ought to be relatively straightforward.
Good feedback.
Noted.
Zubaz, whilst the acknowledgement for the posted feedback is nice can I ask a little more.
In this thread https://forums.stardock.com/309116/page/3 in post 53 I asked the following question:
"However I'd just like to ask Stardock if the uninstaller routine for Iconpackager using Impulse has been updated so that default icons can be set and will remain if Iconpackager is uninstalled?"
Nearly 2 months later there is no clear response and obviously this thread indicates that the issue persists.
With great respect the issue is well known and i again ask whether it is going to be fixed?
Is it really that hard to obtain a clear answer?
Thank you
+1
While I'm at it, I should also mention that IP continues to reset the shell icons to the defaults and wipe out the 'Repair shell icons for the following processes only' list (the 'white' list) every time you update. Hardly lethal, but very annoying.
My icons are getting wiped out on the *installation* of Icon Packager. Here's the ticket I opened:
/* Quote */
Upon installation of Icon Packager v.4.10.177 on Vista x64 Ultimate, all .exe files and their associated shortcuts lose their individual icons and are replaced by the "default" icon. I was able to (unfortunately) replicate this behaviour on 3 clean installs. This issue has been further documented by others at: https://forums.stardock.com/309262.I have to admit that it is ++ annoying to purchase a programs that "beautifies" your icons only to find that the vast majority of your icons are "uglified." It's kind of like getting the exact opposite of what you expected when you bought the program. I suspect your customers are noticeably miffed when this occurs. That being said, I would greatly appreciate a fix. Please advise me as to any specific information you need sent to assist you in your diagnostics.

No answer from tech support after 2 business days. :-/
Same issue as previous post.
Iconpackager worked fine on x64 Vista until I reformatted this weekend. Version impulse installs now wipes all my .exe and shortcut icons to default generic white boxes. Reformatted, reinstalled, and reproduced the issue. Then rolled back to a system restore point set prior to installing iconpackager and icons were all fixed.
This happens as soon as I attempt to apply an icon package. Has nothing to do with uninstalling.
The same problem (wiped icons on installing IP) just bit me. Earlier today I got a promotional email from Stardock, pimping a WindowBlinds / IconPackager combo for $20. Sounded like a good deal until it hosed my default icons. I got things back in order by doing a System Restore (after uninstalling both programs along the way); now I'm hesitant to reinstall either of them. I'll open a ticket as well, and ask about their refund policies while I'm at it.
If you have not emailed support, please do so we can track this.
Yeah I got that two for one deal as well, and it ended up removing all my icons.
I filed a ticket on Friday, and on Monday afternoon I got this reply:
Please access your System Registry (XP - Start-> Run, Vista - WinKey +R) and in the run box type regedit. Then go to the following Key;HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\IconHandlerOn the right side of the screen, if it has a value of {611AD258-4138-4348-A534-9856FA6BA398} you need to rename that registry key from 'IconHandler' to something else, IconHandlerX works. Then reboot your PC and the Icons should come back.
It worked for me. Note for the reading-impaired (like me): When I first started looking for the registry key, I got distracted by the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe section and started thinking that there was no \exefile branch. It's there, but comes later because of the alpha sorting on the "." in ".exe"
Just did this and it fixed my problem ^^
Thanks for posting the solution
That (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\IconHandler) is the current fix for this issue, so far it has worked 100% of the time. We are looking at the un-install routine from the Dev's end so this won't happen all the time.
A thousand thanks to you sir AcidicMInd! You saved me from having to do another reformat because of a corrupted icon cache. I tried every other solution, but this is the only one that worked for me. As for Stardock, I am not impressed that this issue hasn't been addressed since the last time this happened to me, well over a year ago. At the very least, Vista 64 users sholdn't be able to install this program, because this is a major pain in the you-know-where.
I would like to add that I have just experienced this issue on updating IconPackager to the latest release via Impulse. I have experienced the problem before, too long ago to remember how I fixed it.
I attempted to set my icons back to the Windows Default, and used both the Repair and Rebuild options in IconPackager to no avail.
Very annoying indeed. Using REGEDIT I see that my IconHandler entry corresponds to the problem value suggested above and I am about to reboot.
Vista x64 Ultimate.
Thanks for that. Worked for me too.
Thank goodness, I found this thread. I am running Windows 7 64 bit with Icon Handler 5.1 and discovered that the same problem with white icons was reported years ago. In this instance, my Microsoft system icons were fine but my Office 2010 icons were gone as well as some others. Some I was able to restore by right clicking and selecting the appropriate icon but nothing had worked for the Office 2010 icons until I found this thread. I renamed IconHandler to IconHandlerx and all of my icons are now back to normal and Icon Handler has been totally removed from my system. THANK YOU for saving my sanity and Happy New Year to all.
