I want to set up an Elemental fan site and I'm looking for serious and committed community members to get involved. I'll cover all the setup costs and whatnot. So I wanted to know if anyone interested and what domain name do you guys would work best?
Yeah domain name I picked isn't the most appropriate, "War of Magic" looks way better but only the .info is available so far hmm... Anyway the domain name isn't maybe the most important stuff, once community will be used to it, it will be in everyone's bookmarks. However asking authorization to Stardock for using official pictures and design for a fansite is a need (not only legally but also about being polite) , even if I don't think that any game dev refused it in the past.
And I didn't have more luck than you Spartan for getting an answer, we can bet that the dev team is probably hammered since the game announcement hehe!
So SD hasn't released a webkit yet? Probably too early yet for that.
Nope they didn't so far but thanks to their highres poster you can still get nice elements, like Luckmann and Spartan used on the avatars, or details I put of the .info website.
@cervomix - I think some domain host is "tasting" the names (my bet go-daddy). As I said before it really pisses me off. I thought that practice was prohibited by ICANN.
What do you mean, you talk about these parking site (that register tons of domain names to re-sell them after) ? What's funny is to see that if you try to search for a domain availability several times, a week later domain name isn't available anymore...what a surprise.. NOT ! :-/
Oooh! Oooh!
Ele-Mental,
Had to do it.
For "key name" sites, there are usually squatters who actually register the names. For general name searches, some registrars, would reserve the name after someone did a search on it and keep it reserved for some time after. The process of doing that was called "tasting".
Where does one go to register a domain anyway? Is there a central database of some sort?
There are many registrars, hundreds in fact if not thousands globally. Usually when one decided to get an Internet based IT services package the company offering the packages is often a registrar and they take care of the name registration for you. To answer your second question yes there is. It is ICANN.
Update: OK I got permission from Brad (via CariElf) to set up the domain this morning. The domain is setup now.
I'm still waiting on the asset package, most likely it will come from Scott.
Sweet!
(We're still talking about the .net address, correct? I just want to make sure I'm not assuming anything.)
I finished installing a community wiki for the game, feel free to edit it and to create categories and propose how the articles should be structured!
@Martok - yes elementalgame.net (and .org) I was thinking of running the Wiki on the .org and the other on the .net
@Cervmix - Really good job brother.
Slight detour on the discussion (great news btw!). Spartan, do you want me to continue updating Sins news bits? The link between modcraft and clansofsin still doesn't look to be restored, so I don't know if you want to wait or have a wall of news posts at some point
Thanks for the kind words mate, however hardest part now is adding content !
Since you continue your website project Spartan, I'll create a new separated thread about the .info site, forums and wiki to not mix it up with yours !
