So, as we all know, we can create new units, races, etc.
However if we create a new unit, we will need to create new unit models also, just like in Civ4. I am wondering how hard that's gonna be? I suppose that will require some experience in 3D modelling even?
My guess is that the game will include something like the Shipyards in GalCiv2, but probably with larger baseline libraries of structure-parts and the option to choose from user-generated parts that make it through the content-sharing system to publication. That would mean regular folks could do some basic stuff along the lines of playing with Legos and the folks who have the right 3D modeling tools can submit original artwork for possible inclusion in the Impulse-side librarires.
wow! That would be simply awesome.
Well, it has been likened to Spore so hopefully it'll be just as intuitive and user friendly. I'd really love to be able to re-create some of the races from MoM if not improve them (looking at you Gnolls and Lizardmen...).
I'm curious how the balancing will work though. The new units and buildings etc. are going to have stats that affect gameplay.
Will it be a complexity budget like Spore?
A space limit like GalCiv2?
On the subject of Spore, what I like is the Sporecast feature, and being able to subscribe to the creations of certain people only. Something like that would be perfect for Elemental.
Can we get a developer answer?
A spore style creation system would be cool.
I'm not sure how much or if automation will be involved, but I've seen several references to a rating and categorizing system on the Stardock side. I'd assume that part of getting a top rating will be about balance. But you know what sometimes happens when you assume...
I am wondering that why the devs are "ignoring" some threads, while in some topics not one, but more devs are replying.
It is a given that there's more to say on some topics, less on others.Patience is a virtue, as always
The technology in Spore took a lot of time, money, and manpower. I'm sure they can achieve a lot, because the creator in Galciv 2 worked well, but I wouldn't expect them to replicate Spore's astonishing level of customization.
Although imagine your Spore creatures in fantasy game. Maybe I shall have to make a Bisnapper faction: twin jawed, carnivorous wasp-ostritch thingies.
I hope the scaling will allow for races as a whole to be on different scales: giants being swarmed by fairy ninjas.
Don't worry, they're just busy and tend to be very selective about when they actually take the time to respond. They do read the forums:
https://forums.elementalgame.com/328989
https://forums.elementalgame.com/329105
So keep it up, it isn't in vain. I know the feeling though, with the infrequency of an actual "response" it feels like I'm talking into the air. Once in IRC I asked about a possible alternate mechanic and all one of the devs said was "well, we're doing units in a pretty unique way". I asked if that meant the alternate idea was moot and didn't even get a yes or no. They do care, they're just busy. After all, they are writing a game
I have the same feeling like you however i think a such feature has to be pondered lenthily.
Is it doable ?
How to keep it balanced between human player and AI ?
How to keep it balanced with others forms of gameplay (Heroes based, Mage spell casting based, ....) ?
I hope for monsters, daemons, golem, undead, ...workshop just that it might screw the whole game by overshadowing the ways to play it.
True, but only to a point. In software, what took tons of time and effort a short while ago tends to become a canned routine for today's dev tools. Plus, Stardock have been working on various aspects of this new engine for quite a while already. I'm keeping my expectations reasonable, but I don't see any reason to avoid some wildly hopeful thinking
Yes, please, very much yes, please!
As for balance, a points based system like the one used in Dominions to make the Pretender would work nicely for stats.
As for models I am sure many folks will put out great stuff, and the base options will be thought out by the devs well, I hope.
One of the things I liked so much in Dom was there were negative traits that gave some points back to spend.
It would be great if we could see something like:
Stats All Races start at a base, if we are using a percentile system, All would start at say 40.
These could be adjusted to increase and lower stats.
In the Traits, you could have some like:
Add 5 to any Stat
Add 10 to Any Stat
Doing it this way insures that the BASE is set, and keeps one from breaking the system, if you allowed one to sell off stats you might get to a place where an unbalanced horde could be made, as the math breaks down.
I have seen that in many point based Wargames.
So the traits would have things like
Aquatic: Full Speed in and Over Lakes and Rivers Natural Mages: Added Spell Points
Two Races: This is used to show two groups that work as one race but differ greatly, Orcs and Goblins for instance. You would create 2 Base Races, then populate the Army list with 20 Chosen from one or the other. Also works for a Race that uses Summoned or Created Creatures to fight for it, and Necromancers.
And things like that, then add the Half and Half Traits things that have both a positive and a negative. The nice things about these if the effect is not 100% Balanced it can set to cost or grant a number of points to balance it.
Cold Blooded: Speed Reduced in Cold Climates, Heat Effects Reduced including environs Small : Race is Halve the size of most races, STR Max is 30, All Ranged Projectiles have a lesser chance of hitting, and Sneak is improved by 10 points. (This Trait would cost points as it gives more than it takes)
Then of course the Negative traits that add flavor, make the race special and of course gives you more points to spend.
Like
Type of attack, Cold, Heat, and so on Does Extra Damage.
Another point I would add is to have the player Create the Base Normal for that Race, then have a number of Unit Types that can be made.
Then in the traits you can have things like Well Trained, Elite and so on that lets some units start with some extra stat points as these can show those people, monsters or things that push the Race's Limit.
So you would Set your base Stats, and Pick some Racial Traits. Perhaps even Racial Weapons. Each Choice will Cost points or Give some back.
Then you could design up to say 20 units, these can be trained in various skills and abilities, but no unit can exceed a Racial Max, (15 Points higher than race base or so).
Just some thoughts on it, cannot wait to see what the Devs actually do.

Plus, the engine this is built on was designed from the bottom up with this kind of user customization in mind, so the system was probably mostly in place when they decided to make this game.
