Hello All:
New to forum, but have used WindowBlinds for sevel years now, and couldn't find an earlier posting regarding the following question. I was wondering how well older WindowBlinds skins work in latest version of WB6? I have a bunch of older skins that I really like (mostly from WB5), apparently successfully installed them into WB6, but at some point in this process noticed that the skin colors in skins displayed within WB6 started going weird (i.e. lots of bright green, yellow, and orange where I don't think those colors should be). Admittedly, I installed a large number of skins. So I uninstalled WB6, reinstalled it, and only downloaded WB6 compatible skins. Any thoughts on this? Should we really only be using WB6 skins in WB6? And in similar fashion, does using Vista skins on my XP system mess anything up? Thanks for any help or insight!
Warmly;
Thunder_Struck
I do know that Windowblinds is backwards compatible, so previous versions skins are usable on WB6. No you shouldn't be using only 6 on 6, it's made to use older skins like that. As for Vista... depends on how the skin was created. Some Vista skins might work but I wouldn't count on it most of the time. It won't 'mess anything up' but they just might not work.
Your re-coloring could be a result of the "I want to adjust the colour of my skin" check box. Depending on what you've done with previous skins sometimes it carries over when you re-apply something else. Just in case you didn't try that.
Older skins will work except with some of them if you click on the startmenu button and then the desktop not all of the starmenu will disappear as it should. As far as using Vista skins on XP...not sure if it will mess anything up...but it would be best to just use ones made for XP. I've accidently applied Vista skins to my XP and nothing get messed up...but I did notice a slight slowdown on my system....not sure if that was the cause or not...I just reappllied the correct version of the skin and all was well.
I have used skins all the way back to 2003 with no real issues. The biggest difference is there are fewer "special features" in the elderly skins that you would see in newer skins. If you look at some of my older reviews, you'll see I have shown off some of those elderly skins and mentioned in my comments what the pro's and cons of working with older skins can be .
As giz pointed out, there are a few glitches with some of the older skins, but for the most part there is no reason not to give ol' grampa a chance.
As far as vista skins go, there are a few that just won't work at all in XP, a good example of this is Kitty Malone's skins. If it says "Vista only" it really is. if you try to use it in xp, the graphics just won't mesh and the whole thing looks sloppy. I usually wait for her to make the xp version and am always pleased with the results.
I can't suggest what you should do, but I can tell you what I do. I try each and every skin, to see if there is an issue or not. You'd be surprised how many of the vista only skins will work on xp. You might lose some of the special features of the occasional skin, but I haven't found too many that I just couldn't live with despite those losses.
oh, and if you find an older skin that you can really show off to it's best advantage, please share with us! show us a screen shot of how you made it shine , let us in on your secret to making the best of skins so many have forgotten are there.
Thank you, each of you, for your helpful responces! Pixls' comment regarding the color adjustment fixed my problem. When this button is deselectedI, the skins look fine. I have reinstalled all of my older skins and am working my way through them to see which ones work well and look good. Again, thank you for your kind responces!
