Hi,
I have a gaming computer that I do not want connected to the internet. I invested a pretty penny into it, and so I don't want it to fall prey to any viruses, and just want it to be standalone. Now, I just installed Galactive Civs II on it, having just found my disc in a corner of a shelf covered in dust. On the computer that I donwloaded it on from the stardock downloader (my old laptop, this is a new thinkpad), I had the patches on. How do I download the patches and install it on the other computer (A Dell Inspiron 530 with a quad core)?
The game runs so much faster on it with 4 gigs of ram and a quad core, plus the Nvidia GeForce 8300 really keeps it from crashing (the laptop's video card was just integrated).
Through StarDock Central, or Impulse you need to :
1 - fully patch the internet connected computer galciv2
2 - archive the application
3 - transfer archive + to your non connected computer
4 - install SDC or impulse to your non connected computer and voilà ...
Which application do I archive? The game's application that opens it or the patch itself, and if so, where do I get that?
EDIT:
I'm also sorry for the double thread post, any mods looking out there, my computer was extremely slow last night and the wi-fi must have sent it twice, or I accidentally double clicked the post button.
you need to archive the patched application (galactic civilization 2 : Dread Lords + Dark Avatar if you have it + Twilight of the Arnor if you have it )
both the patches and the ability to archive said application are features of either one of those stardock softwares : Stardock Central, OR Impulse
(links include download pages)
Alright, so you want me to just copy (that's what an archive is, a copy, right?) the galciv2 application from the old laptop and copy it (after a virus cleansing, just in case) to my new computer in the galciv2 folder, right? Would it interfere with the operation of it if I kept a backup of the application just in case it messes up galciv (don't have dark avatar or twighlight arnor, just vanilla with dread lords)?
although copying over directly the folder from one comp to the other might just work (even if some registry settings might be missing)
it's better and cleaner to use the "archive" functionnality inside the apps I told you about
this will make a "zip" like file of galciv2 which can then be copied over to the other comp, and will allow you to reinstall galciv2 in the way it's meant to be installed (it's not really a zip file though, it's just kind of the same)
and AFAIK archiving galciv2, copying it over to another comp , and installing it there won't break anything on your first installation.
I think I'm going to need to try the archive function. I just copied it over and got the following error message upon clicking "play" on the splash screen, and it isn't because of the shortcut, I get it when I open the program itself.
Galciv2.exe - Entry Point Not Found X The procedure entry point ?ResourceManagerRegisterFiles@@YAJPBD0@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library Lib3d.dll.
Galciv2.exe - Entry Point Not Found
X The procedure entry point ?ResourceManagerRegisterFiles@@YAJPBD0@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library Lib3d.dll.
Is this because of anything I did wrong? I know a lot about files and their links, but when it comes to the registry, or strings of characters, I am clueless.
So, yeah, I'll try the archive function and get back in a few minutes.
if you're clueless as of using the registry, may I suggest to not fiddle with it as doing something wrong there may have unforeseen consequences ...
more so since you got another easy solution
Please know that Impulse must connect once online before it can run fully. If the machine that it is being installed to isn't online at all then Impulse can't fully start up. Once it connects for the first time you are free to use it in offline mode and it can be used to restore the archive of the game. Sorry for the trouble in this. Please let us know if you have further questions.
So, I cannot transfer the update over to the other computer not connected to the internet?
Also, just donwloaded Impulse, and I don't see where to download the update on this laptop. I don't want to download the game on this one, as it would take up space, take a while to download, and I don't want to have the annoyingness of transferring a 2-3 gb file over with a 1 gig flash drive, last time I did that, for the first computer I installed it on (also, no internet connection) to the other laptop, it took about 30 mins, as the first one didn't have a USB high-speed port.
Now, that being said, is there any way that I can just copy Impulse over to a flash card (1GB) and just put it on the computer?
Finally, is the 2.0 update ONLY for DA and TA? Can I just put it on vanilla Dread Lords?
2.0 is only for DA and TA. There is not a 2.0 update for DL, so there's no way you can "put it on" DL. In addition, TA gets the majority of the 2.0 features, while DA, to my knowledge, simply gets the spying improvement. It may or may not also be able to trade fleets now-I forgot to check. But that's beside the point.
I believe SeaBass already answered your other questions. To clarify, you can archive with Impulse on one system and restore the archives on a system that is not online with Impulse on another system, but the system must be online to install Impulse.
Considering that DL's archive is 1.2GB, you'd have to split that to fit it on a 1GB flash drive. It may be worthwhile to get a new, larger one.
I copied and pasted Impulse onto the computer, but it still asks for login, and seeing as there is no internet connection, it's useless to try. Couldn't I just download it onto this computer and copy the entire program over? I have a 200GB portable harddrive to do that.
I thought you already tried that, there?
If Impulse is working when copy/pasted (or appears to be, anyway), what happens if you cancel the login prompt? Or did you already try that to no avail?
It just closes when I click cancel. Also, the archive is from SDC, but what you quoted was when I attempted to copy the patched game over to the unpatched one, copying Galciv2.exe and replacing the other (after backing it up). I'm downloading Galciv2 (again) to this one so I can patch it and send it over to the other one after deleting the entire game from the computer.
Nope, didn't work. I copied it successfully, but then this critter pops up:
Galactive Civilizations 2 X The product appears to be validated by the machine SID doesn't match. Try deleting the file C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\GalCiv2\sig.bin and then re-activating. Ok
Galactive Civilizations 2 X
The product appears to be validated by the machine SID doesn't match. Try deleting the file C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\GalCiv2\sig.bin and then re-activating.
Ok
Isn't there a way that I can just get a patched game without having to download a cracked game from any piracy website?
did you try to delete the sig.bin file ?

And, I'm just wondering ... if you did archive with SDC then why trying out with impulse ?
impulse is NOT SDC
good luck and tell us if there's any other problem, I'll try to help
Here is the FAQ on the SID error you received:

Thank you for the translation above about the offline Impulse answer. Once you move over the setup file of Impulse and install/run it just unplug the machine from your internet connection and you can restore any Impulse archive you move over to the offline machine. Activation is still required but that can be done through email services.
Here is the quick guide to offline activation:https://esupport.stardock.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=447

Coincidentally, inside of that old CD case, I did find the CD key, which I thought I had lost when a SD employee gave me another, which I'm still thankful of. SD has great customer service.
So, I'm going to try the offline activation then with the same key code I was given (since it probably will require the one it was downloaded with).
Ok, Just sent the activation code as of 4:00 PM Eastern Time, South Carolina, United States of America.
Now, I just need to wait at most 16 hours as I wait for SD to recieve and do whatever they do to activate it offline (I would assume sending me a file to transfer over to the offline gaming rig).
Negative. If you did not get a reply from activate@stardock.com with in minutes then something did not take. Please forward that same coded message to support@stardock.com and we will take care of it right away for you.
alright, the message should still be inside of my sent folder
edit:
also, yes, its 4:15PM EST. Its been 24 hours, so I'll send it to you guys, just read your message anyways. alright, I'll send it to support.
edit edit:
AOL must have sent it twice, got 2 support tickets, but anyways, just autoresponses up until now. Just got a load of them from the server.
First off, I want to thank Seabass and Travis G for the help. Seabass told me to send it to support, and Travis gave me the sig code. Thanks guys.
I think a mod needs to sticky this. I didn't update this game for quite some time and finally got around to it after a couple weeks of frustration. If I had this problem others probably do/will if they want to activate offline. So yeah, thanks guys.
Thanks for all the help,
Scouto2
Seabass and Travis are the same guy and you are most welcome.
Just in case anyone had any troubles activating through the mid part of today there was a server problem that has been corrected. A ton of email went out to let people know about the issue but just in case I'll mention it here too. It should be working as per normal now. Should you have any troubles just email your account information and any activation information you can to support@stardock.com.
that's all I had to say, very constructive isn't it ? I know I know .. don't thank me, ho noes
