This is something I always seem to run into at different points in the game. The basic gist is, I will be on good terms with another Race ( sometimes very good terms ) and all of the sudden their Relationship Meter starts to drop a point per turn, and then they declare war. What irks me is that I don't feel like I'm doing anything particularly different from back when they liked me. It's not as though I've started raiding their Starbases or something.
I have some 'inklings' about what makes them mad. I don't think they like having my Military units inside their Influence. I don't think they like their Planets being inside my Influence. I also suspect that if I'm doing incredibly poorly Militarily, they tend to get unfriendly and then attack me, since I'm an easy target.
But what's weird is that I can be doing some of those things and they don't mind, and then one day they go apeshit. Is it just some meter that "overflows" and then your Relationship starts to drop? Do they start to care more at certain points in time? Is it just random?
If there are definite things that will always make them mad, does anybody know of a list? And additionally, is there anything I can do to make them happier?
Thanks much for the advice,
jujumbura
These are some things I notice that will affect relations with AI that you have 'good' relations with.Do you pay tribute to races at all to up their relationship with you?One thing I've have noticed is if you pay tribute to race that they are at war with or hostle towards your relation with that race you have 'good' relations will suffer. Also, If your declare war on a race that has 'good' relations with the race you have 'good' relations with it will suffer.examples areI had 'Friendly' relations with both the Korx and Terrans. The Korx were at war with the Terrans and the Terrans asked me for help. I gave the 2 small war ships. When I clicked the turn button my relation with the Korx went from 'Friendly' to 'Wary' in one turn!
But that's an example of a pretty Discrete event. I'm not surprised when someobody declares war and people start forming alliances, what surprises me is when no major events have occurred and all of the sudden I'm on a certain race's shit list
you need to get the AIs into wars, even if that means giving them money + techs (not too much important techs though)
if you try to keep a peaceful stance and try to keep the galaxy at peace, sooner or later some of them will turn on you
keeping them busy is the key to your own peace (unless an unpredictable event kicks in)
of course choose their opponents wisely so that you can slow down the most successful AIs
Still, you'll get the occasional event where one of their ambassador or something was killed while on diplomatic mission with you and they go to war with you no matter what ...
To see what factors the AI is using to judge their relationship with you, go to the Foreign Relations screen. One of the tabs will show you a list of pluses and minuses. The more pluses the better relations. Some are apparently weighted mor heavily than others, like your military strength. I havn't noticed anything like Led Zergglin said but that is cool if the AI reacts that way.
there are times where relations just change even when you aren't rteally doing anything different. I've had wars declared on me while having good relations wioth a race. I thought that if i stayed above hostile I'd be ok, or that I'd at least use it as a warning. But i get the pop up telling me that they are going to rid the universe of me. So relations can change by themselves and wars can be decaled at any time. The galaxy is a dangerous place.
some of it amounts to less obvious ways the AI is programmed. sometimes evil AIs will gang up on "easy pickings" while good and, to a lesser extent, neutral AIs will gang up on anyone who's become too powerful (though sometimes, if it way too powerful, they won't). usually there will be a pop-up from the AI in question, though, so it doesn't sound like this is what's going on.
You know, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the super manipulator ability.
If you're not all that friendly with the Drath, they will start getting near-ally races to go to war with you.
They focus on this alot if you're about to wipe them out.
And Jujumbura........
I'm giving you Karma for still using the classic forum smileys.
It's nice to see tradition, but personnally, the flashiness of the new ones has sortof converted me to the "Dark Side".
Hope what I wrote helps.
Let's RAGE!!!
And Whismer.....
It is my solemn duty to keep the galaxy at peace in all my games.
And I do pretty damn good.
And this is on Suicidal.
Ho yeah I forgot about that (manipulator) but it's not limited to the drath. As far as I know, any AI may try to convince any other AI into war against the player, the drath are just more likely to do it.
ho and Extant Faora: do it any way that pleases you, I just suggested that if the AI is already at war with potent AIs, then it is less likely to attack you if you do nothing stupid (like putting influence starbases next to his planets, transports and warships in his territory and the like ...)
I be the Galactic UN, them's other races is gonna have ta start payin me to go ta war with one another.
