GO Wild with any ideas of map interface changes!!!
I'm sorry I cant come up with anything, could you be more specific about "Map interface" changes? Do you mean things like zooming in or out, or selecting units?
These are just some examples I thought of go ahead and make comments
For map revamp, I would support the ideas of
1: making ship/structure/planet scale more appropriate
2: Solar systems more realistic
a: moons
b: 3 to 6 planets per solar system
c: planets rotate around the star making traveling between planets realistic
d: asteriods would now be belts that go all the way around the star, so there would be only mining operations and an occational giant asteriod that can be colonized but it will be very rare
3: Gas giants should be able to colonize
a: you get ship production bonuses
b: skymining which improves speed of ships and phase lane speeds
4: Pirates and rebellions due to your decissions and actions
5: New diplomacy and political system
6: Can build more things on planet
why only 3 to 6 planets? i mean, even our solar system has 8, plus several planet-like ones (pluto, makemake, eris, etc which are too small to be considered as planets)
also, how should you be able to colonize a gas giant? you can´t technically set a foot on it...
All of your ideas seem very thoughtful and I agree with most of them especially the ones about having planets that are in scale with the sun, for example: As a ship gets nearer to orbit of a planet then more and more of your screen should be taken up from top to bottom and side to side of the planet until the whole screen is fill with the detail of the planet so if you are in orbit over say the ocean then other then a few high clouds most of your screen should be the color of that planets water with some detail.
Planets that orbit around the sun is cool by me, I hope that the mad men of Sins will add this in sooner or later along with some moons that can support some outposts that must be researched and built.
As far as gas giants are concerned, even they should have a few moons orbiting them and if so then those moons can be used for bases whether in orbit or on the ground and the gases from the gas giant could be mined via orbital refineries.
Now when it comes to a star system's sun and how close can one get, I think that only special researched shield technology must be used for anything smaller than a cruiser class ship and of course the the sun and ship should be in scale with each other as the ship gets closer.
Dunkellic:
Have you watched a Star Wars Movie where some of the characters go to Bespin. Bespin is a gas giant with a giant floating colony+industry platform. Also in a book series called The Saga of Seven Suns by Kevin J. Anderson where the humans/roamers and ilderians use skymining in the atmoshpere of the gas giant to produce ekti a fuel for their stardrive which is is like the hyperdrive in starwars.
Do you realize that by the defintion of "planet", half of our solar system is gas giants but, we can change to more like 5-9 planets (that does not include asteriod belts and other anomalies.
Spacemann:
The ideas of moons are great additions of gas giant colonization
I would like to see the enviroment more "alive".
Like solar flares,
It would be nice to have some activity from the star that would limit your ability to orbit or phase jump back and forth between systems.
Or meteor showers,
You could try to run a gauntlet through them or have to go around when traveling.
Or black holes,
Kinda self explainatory.
I would also like to see a ring world.
It creates small and faint "rings" around some planets. Not exactly the kind thing that you or I want though...
I had more of something like this in mind,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringworld
how about this kind of ring planet
www.deusdesigns.com/pages/portfolio.php
They should at least make the current ring planet rings brighter, so you can see them easier, maybe a little more color as well...
@ op: for future notice, you might want to pick a clearer title and make the ensuing post relate more to it. while your suggestions hold merit, none of it strikes me as interface problems. what's more, there is a bunch of suggestions threads, so I don't quite see the particular aspects that justify yet another one. look around a bit, your suggestions are in fact fairly popular and have been brought up before, so you're in good company to discuss details and operative stuff.
Have you ever found that gas giants to me is almost tacticaly in the way. They always appear on the outer edges of my empire and just to defend with many ships to protect from others capturing the mine with the colony frigate. The only good the gas giant does for me tacticaly, is acting as a buffer zone between my empire and my enemy. That is why I want to able to colonize it to have tactical structures so it actually worth something in value.
You can already have ring planets
last time I heard they did not have any gameplay impact though. not that I demand it, but as they are essentially just a huge amount of bigger and smaller rocks, they could have an influence on metal or crystal rates on the planet.
That would be cool. They could also increase credit income because they are a tourist attraction. Take Saturn for instance. I would bet that a lot a people would pay a lot of money to see its rings up close.
This what I really wanted for gas giants rings or no rings because right now they are completely of no use for me.
If you want colonizable gas giants that actually do something for you, check out Danman's 7 Deadly Sins mod or his Solar Sins mod. They both have colonizable gas giants, as well as a bunch of other new planets. 7DS also has a bunch of new races. Solar Sins is just the new planets.
thanks for the mod info
things i want in the game if posible for expanshion
theses are a few choeses of mine
Most of the stuff in your list right now is in this mod I just found out
No problem.
There are a couple of things I forgot to mention, though, about Danman's mods. They have moons. They are basicly planetary bonuses that random planets will have. You can't actually build stuff on them, but they provide you with a bunch of bonuses. The planet's population, trade income, tax income, and a bunch of other things in increased. The mods also have black holes, that occasionly appear instead of stars. If your ship flys too close to one, it pretty much stops moving and begins to take damage until it dies. Unfortunetly, I don't believe that the AI is smart enough to avoid it, so it will fly its ships straight through the black hole. I also believe the Danman is working on getting a ringworld or something similar into his mods.
Finally, I just want to say that I don't think that having the planets revolve around the sun is a very good idea. If you kept phase lanes for travel, you would end up with a horribly convoluted mess around every star. The only way to keep the phase lanes in order would be to have all the planets move together, which would be unrealistic. If you got rid of the phase lanes all together, at let people jump from any planet to any other, players would have to have a fleet at every one of their planets to defend it. Plus, it would probably take some serious reworking of the game engine to implement moving planets.
I actually figured out a way that planets revolving around the sun is possible without being convoluted. Yes I do agree that it would take a serious rework with the game engine for moving planets. You can jump from any planet to another and you would not have to need a fleet at every planet to defend your empire.
Basicly, a star systems would include about 7-12 planets with about 3-4 asteroid belts that goes all the way around the star. The asteroid fields seperate th system in sections so that one cannot jump from the first planet to the last. To get out of the star system you would need to be at the star or the asteroid belt at the edge of the star system. Each planet has a different orbital speed, so one planet may travel around faster than another.
Phase lanes would be everchanging, it would follow the basic rules:
1) You can travel from one planet to another unless another planet or asteroid field is in the way.
2) When traveling in phase space, your ships will slowly curve towards that planet you want to go to and arive there. The reason why the ships will curve in phase space because the planets are moving at the same time and the ships need to change there phase flight path.
3) While traveling in phase space, if the target destination is blocked by another planet, the ships will stop at that planet. This will only happen if the ships are at the very edge of the planets occupation gravity well, before that planet passes by the target planet. If the blocking planet passes by before the ships get to it, the ships will continue on to the destination target.
The only place I would not use this is online multiplayer because most people will not have a computer to run it correctly and would crash it. So basicly it would be and option for single player mode.
Yes I do know that but I have created a 500 planet single star system and only seen 2 planets have rings. So right now I see it as 1 per 250 planets. I would like to have it occur 1 per 20 planets.
I just thought of a great structure for producing unit faster. It would be a ship drive yard kind of like the Kuat Drive Yards.
1) It will take up 12 logistical and 8 tactical slots
2) It can produce 6 frigates at once, 4 cruisers at once, and 2 cap at once.
3) It will have 10% cost reduction bonus plus a 12% speed production bonus, improves resource extraxtion rate.
4) Houses 5 squadrons
5) And holds a couple of defense platforms(the gaus, missil, beam defense)
I like Kuat as the ring world. Your idea for revolving solar systems, but I still have to say, I prefer the current way. It would solve the problems, but I like it the way it is.
How about making worlds in crazy shapes like the planet builders from Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy? (movie)
What about the capability of a "cyborg-like" planet.
A way to buy planets to build?
STORY MODE
Bonus' for just being in a star system.
Limitations of certain ship drives from entering certain stars
MANY MANY additional star types
MANY MANY additional planet types and Mesh's
Orbiting Planets? Phase lanes switching...
Different Universes within one map??
Maps that connect to different maps (Like Sim City 4)
STORY MODE!
Much more user friendly Forge interface (...Massive scale 50k x 50k maps
More diplomacy options....
jump/phase machines to create phase lanes
travel distance techs. the first couple batches of ships made shoudnt be able to traverse an entire solar system in minutes
