Hi, im working on a mobile defense mini mod and have been playtesting it, and have had a number of gravity well battles that wind up out in the middle of space... haha... don't know why, or if i've somehow changed something without knowing it, or if this is normal and everyone is already used to this. Anyway, wanted to post a screenshot and see if anyone else is having this behaviour. Maybe 1.05 got some upgrades i didnt know about.

That used to happen to me on certain mods as well. a flak frigate or something would just fly out to space and all my dudes would fly after him
Ahhh.... it's kinda nice... and certainly makes for an interesting battle when they are all strung out in a straight line straight up. anyway i think the devs must have realized that fighting just in a flat two dimensional space would be boring... and wanted to jazz it up. At least that is my guess if other people are having this happen too. Thanks Canadaman777.

I know how to make gravity wells bigger, for larger battles.
However have not seen this behavior where the grav well has not been changed. U sure thats not straight up in the Z axis?
I've had this happen before, too. My planet is attacked, and none of my bombers/fighters from my hanger defences are there. If I'm lucky, they haven't gone too far and I can still find them and have them dock without it taking too long. Otherwise they are lost in space and I have to scuttle them and build new ones.

I dont scuttle them, I either go on, or wait, and sometimes it is a bit of a wait, but it would be interesting to have planet to planet travel without the jump drive. I mean it would be way slower, but that could be worthwhile if you could come up underneath a planet without the baddies knowing it. Or give it some benefit different from the phase lanes. It could be interesting.
Wouldn't it be cool, if you could "Hide" in open space? Sorta like FogofWar, where other players looking for you, including the AI, could see planets, like with clairvoyance... or colonies that belong to you, or even trace the phase lanes back from planet to planet... but in "Open Space" you could go anywhere, and be hidden except perhaps until you were... hmm... 100 clicks out?
Now I would like that... or dust clouds.. like in HW2...? Talk about Hide and Seek, or Attack from Cover
i think the way gravity wells are set up that it would be imposible to move to a different planet withought phase lanes. its one of those hardcoded things that will never change.
Hmmm... what a shame.
Well... it would be interesting to find out. As of now, i can get pretty far out from the well chasing the baddies, almost halfway to another planet. But it happens by accident and i dont understand why. Perhaps if i did understand why, then perhaps i could do it on purpose.
Just a thought.
possiblly but i believe that the main problem is that the game sees a ship as being in a gravity well. so long as its in that well it cannot cross into the next withought first going into phase space.
Actually I would like to see if some one made a "sword" mod that allowed battles in phase space or in between the planets like the series banner of the stars. Now that would be really cool!
If all the planets were connected to one another that wouldn't be a problem. You could just phase to any you wanted when you are next to it.

Right now, are phase lanes ways of connecting one "area" to "another"? Even if the galaxy and universe has like 100 planets and i can zoom out, when the battle is raging im still in only one gravity well. Hmmm..... I wonder if you could like link areas, i mean link grav wells? What if you had ten phase lanes between two planets instead of just one? or what if the wells were like overlapping, instead of being like far apart? Would you still need phase lanes or some transitioning sort of mode to get from one to the other?
And right now, when my ships fly out in a battle out beyond the well, how far can the ships really go? I mean, right now i just sort of fight the battle and get back to the well as quick as i can, so i have no idea how far out they can go, but what if i kept going? Haha... i mean, maybe not the "whole" fleet right, just two or three ships to see how far they can go. That would be interesting to see. Maybe the devs know all this, they designed it, so im certain that what appears new or unfamiliar to me, is of course old knowledge to them.
Anyway, i still think it would be cool, even if its not possible. Haha, just makes it that much more enticing, not being able to really make it happen.
