I have questions about fleets. I am pretty new to the game, and play only single player. I started playing small maps and the smaller medium maps, and have only rarely felt the need to create a fleet. I don't micro battles (other than some focus fire from time to time with LRM's on vulnerable cap ships) and don't want to start. I generally defeat hard AI, but they are an entertaining match for me and once in a while they surprise me and I lose. I am going to start playing larger maps, and think that with more ships and planets fleets may be helpful to keep things organized, so...
1. Do Fleets fight more effectively? If I have a group of ships and send them in to battle, will they do better as a fleet? Sometimes it seems that the ships in a fleet spend a lot of time "re-forming" (even in the middle of a battle), which (if they can't fight and re-form at the same time) makes me nervous.
2. What is the best way to form fleets? I don't mean what ships to put in a fleet, but I just select a bunch of ships and select "Create Fleet". Is there a better way?
3. Is a balanced fleet the best way to go? Or does it work better to have a fleet of siege frigates, and other more specialized fleets?
3. As ships in the fleet die, what is the best way to get new ships into the fleet? I tend to end up with fleets with hardly any ships in them.
4. Does it matter what ship is selected as the fleet leader? Originally I though it should be one of the cap ships, but then if I have to retreat the cap ship to protect it, the whole fleet bugs out if I forget to tell the cap ship to leave the fleet before giving the retreat order, which is not always what I want. But does it matter who the fleet leader is? Why?
5. And if so, how do I get the ship I want to be the fleet leader when I create a fleet? And how do I switch fleet leaders if I somehow get the wrong leader selected?
Thanks!
1. It depend on the situation, but I don't like the "formal" fleet ( fleet create with "Create fleet" button").
2. Select a bunch of fleet and Ctrl + Number is a good way to create a "custom" fleet.
3. A balance fleet is better since you can at least defend effectively against all type of attacks.
4. Just buy new ship and group them with the rest
5. In a "formal" fleet all ship follow the fleet leader, so you can just move the leader and the rest will follow.
6. Sorry, I don't know.
When you select a group of ships to be formed into a fleet, look for the sub-selected unit. You can tell which unit it is in two ways: the actual ship's selection circle is brighter than the faded circles of all the other units. Alternately, look in the empire tree and the ship's representative icon will be brighter than the other selected ships.
There's also a small white caret - one of these: ^ - on the icon of the fleet flagship in the empire tree.
Well in the situation when you have to retreat the fleet leaders, just "de-fleet" the leader from its fleet in the fleet management box. It's the same button as the form fleet button in the management box.
I know Ctrl + maybe a better way in the beginning, but as the game go on, it's really difficult to keep track of your control groups without the fleet system.
Karma man, I want Karma
Thanks, It still bugs me to have all my ships flying around "re-forming" fleet in the middle of a battle. Wish I knew if that time that seems to be wasted is actually useful or not.
Or, when a battle starts would I do better to get all of my ships out of the fleet and let them fight on their own and re-from the fleet after the battle. I have to believe that an organized fleet will fight more efficiently, but wish I knew if that was true or not.
It is important to have a balance of balanced fleets and specialized fleets. The most important thing though is to keep an eye on your enemy by scouting. This tells you which ships to build, for example if the enemyis building normal frigates you build a specialized fleet of LRM's which shred them with no problem, after you defeat the enemys fleet you can bring in a siege fleet and take out his planet. If the enemy is going carrier on you (most likely advent) you have to build LRM's and flak frigates. In large maps where there are large numbers of ships it is easier to have one balanced fleet and the rest to be specialized because it sometimes gets confusing as to where your ships are. In small maps it is easier to have balanced fleets because there is not so much ships and games tend not to last so long. Hope this helps
In my fleets, I normally balance out two or three with a TON of bombers/fighters, carried by Light Carriers
(30+ should get a low-med level Cap. Ship) ecsorted by HEavy, close combat frigates, the second fleets'
destruction being in LRF power, also escorted by close range combat experts. As for a 3rd or 4th fleet, I normally combine the two.
Hope this helps! Koda0
P.S. I use the "formal" method.
