firstly, BRILLIANT!!!
i've played 5 or so games now at different settings and the best and stable performace is everythning on high vertical do-dah on and AA set to 8.
with AA set to 16 the game will lock up about 15-20 mins in but start again without rendering properly, e.g. background water is a flowing red and black cheqer box, ground smoke lighter moving squares etc.
with AA set to 16Q game crashes in the same time but doesn't return and take a shed load of alt+tab, alt+F4, ctrl+alt+del and some hefty curses to return to the desktop.
i've no idea if it should be able to run past AA 8 (or what that means) but hopefully this helps.

The 9800GT cards are supposed to support 16AA, according to manufacture specs, and you've got the latest drivers.
Your maximum resolution is apparently 1600x1200. Are you using a CRT monitor? Maybe rendering 16:10 scaling on a 4:3 monitor is causing grief somehow? Just guessing here.
it's a 20" LCD (widescreen) so it should all be 16:9
what is AA and also what is Q?

AA = antialiasing, it's good at getting rid of jagged pixel edges. Q makes it better, I forgot how.
got it:
AA = better suspension, smoother ride
Q = a red paint job with go faster stripes

From your description and some other cases where user had very, very low VRAM available, I would guess the 16x AA exceeded the amount of VRAM available, causing errors. In SupCom, black+red checkers meant that the texture was not available and particles being squares meant too much resources being used at the same time. Soooo... in short, don't try 16x AA or your computer will murder you in your sleep . Have you tried setting anisostropic filtering to 4x? It makes all the textures crisper.
Btw, update your drivers to 177.92 beta, they're a big improvement over the previous ones.
Do the 92's cover the 9-series as well? I checked Nvidia's site, and their latest driver listed for that card at still the 77's. I know Nvidia sucks at keeping things up to date, but...
If the 92's cover your card, then go for it. They're working quite nicely on my own computer.
tried the new new drivers - just one game so far but all went well at 16Q.
