I had an interesting idea about item purchasing mechanics. Anyone familiar with Dota knows all about recipes and so far they seem conspicuously absent. I think the simple buying mechanic is okay but I'm still hoping to see something a little more interesting as well. However, recipes are a well known for being very unintuitive and difficult for new players to pick up.
My idea is that a system of tiered items is implemented and instead of recipes items are purchased using other items of certain tiers are part of the purchase price. Just for example lets say there are tiers 1-3. tier 1 items simply cost gold but a tier 2 item costs a certain amount of gold and a tier 1 item (maybe even 2 tier 1 items). Tier 3 naturally would either cost more gold + a tier 2 item+ 1-2 tier 1 items or something like that. The notion I'm thinking of is like card games where to play a certain powerful card another card must be discarded.
At a glance this is similar to a recipe but it isn't because any tier 1 or 2 items can be used as payment for the the item requirement. This is purely a cost as items don't combine and give bonuses to the new item. This presents many interesting choices for item builds. Which items in your inventory do you sacrifice? Is it better to buy the cheapest items to build your t2 item fastest or do you buy t1 items that are the most helpful for you now and trade them out later?
Anyway, the point of this is to provide a way for items to be built which is simple and doesn't require memorized formula's but still results in interesting and deep choices. It would be very dynamic allowing many possible paths to upper tier items.
does not sound to bad
but i would rather link this tier - trading to the same item "type, so a t2 damage item, needs t1 damage items and no other t1 dmg items
t2 heal items need t1 heal items and so on
I hate the recipes in DotA however...I would like an "item upgrade" button thing. Sort of like the blacksmith upping items in mmo's i guess.
Go to the shop, hit an upgrade button next to the item where it shows what you're wearing, and for a cost of gold it gets increased and/or more effects.
I like this idea the best. I'd like to see the upgrades bring the cheapest item to the cost of the most expensive, so there isn't a defrinitive 'absolutely tooled' build, but instead a bunch of options that all give different effects. I do think the most expensive should be slightly better at what they do, because you're playing for a long time without an item to get them, but having a variety of alternatives that are different enough to present viable alternatives at all stages of the game would be excellent.
I prefer upgrade/custom to recipe concerning items , I've posted something like that here :

Recipies are sooooo damn annoying. I don't want to memorize them in order to waste my money on the wrong low tier item. That kind of thing drives me nuts because why does that combination make a better item than any other? It's quite arbitrary to need certain combinations of items.
Yeah just getting the basic item that has stats like you want(IE, faster attack with lower armor) and hitting upgrade to pay more for even more attack speed and bit more armor, but still taking just one spot, makes the most sense to me..
Things need to be intuitive and quick.
It would also reduce a lot of the clutter in item shops where it's just the same item only slightly higher levelled. Instead, you get all of the choices and very little of the clutter. It's definitely the best way to do things.
I agree with innociv that it should be fast & easy. Recipes make it more complicated, but instead of just simple button upgrade I think that it could be great if you can get some more option when upgrading.
For example when you bought lets say boots, you will get something like "tree" for this item. Then if you have cash you just choose one of availble options.
That would be very cool. Maybe instead of different boots, have basic boots and get an option to upgrade a particular stat on them every time, so you could get that perfect combination of splash, attack speed and bonus health in an item. Or just make it by combining different items, I don't really care.
This is something that my original idea avoids by default because ANY correct tier item could be used for the item cost. It would allow a very dynamic item building system. Say you started out planning to build one item but battlefield situations indicate another item would be a better choice and its completely natural to switch builds.
I'm not really sure I like the idea of building custom items. I'm not sure thats exactly what you meant though. My thought is that if you are allowed to upgrade an item the way you want it would be possible to create very overpowered strats by maxing out certain characteristics. This could make balancing items rather difficult. I think it would be a lot easier to balance a group of items that have set bonuses and powers, than a plethora of items on a sliding scale. At a cursory glance it seems like it removes some of the depth for choosing items. It would effectively homogenizes all items.
I meant something where you can take an item and get a series of choices to increase certain attributes. HP gain and the like will always be there, but the more esoteric stats won't. I actually prefer the idea of a skinnier tree with a selection of initial items to broaden the possibilities for this reason.
Yea, I just don't think the game would feel "right" without some form of item upgrade system. It certainly doesn't have to be as unintuitive and require as much encyclopedic knowledge as DoTA's, though.
I think that it could be really very simple and also can give many choices. For me it would be great to have basic item + upgrades for this item. For example: Let's say you will buy boots you will get bonus for your speed, and maybe some armor. And now when you will get enough cash you can choose one of few options: 1. upgrade to warrior boots - you will get bigger bonus to armor & maybe for speed and let's say more hp & regeneration. 2. upgrade to mage boots - you will get some bonus to armor & speed and bonus to power & power regeneration etc.
EDIT: I have already check that there is other topic http://forums.demigodthegame.com/323546
