I thought I was the only one who did that
Thanks for the heads up on our altmeta empire page.
Hmmm I bet your real name isn't even GW Swicord either!!!
vVvV Look finally got my 20 game medal. Thought I'd never get there
Depends entirely on what you mean by "real name." I can't sign contracts that way, but it's close to what my mom had put on the First Nail in my Bureaucratic Coffin.
Uhmmm Geroge W???
*runs off before GW has chance to put foot to ass*
Ahhh, I think I can safely start up a new game finally without too much in the way of distraction. Here's hoping for an uninterupted ToA (immense) gaming stretch again. The only thing that concerns me is that these gall darn gaming hiccups are stressing me out .
Who knows, I may have to resort to playing large or medium maps again if this trend continues.
particle, I managed to finish many Gigantic maps finished on my old, sub-spec rig, although late game turns could take *lots* of waiting during processing.
If your rig is up to current specs, you should be able to do a bit of tweaking to game options and maybe your virtual memory that will minimize any 'hiccups.' I've been on a Vista box with an adequate vid card for over a year and about the only way I can crash the game any more is the many-days-with-evening-hibernation scenario I mentioned above.
GW, my game would freeze in Vista if I left it overnight too. However, I switched to playing in windowed mode (still looks like full screen though which is nice) and I don't have the lock-ups anymore.
Sorry GW, I guess I wasn't clear when I wrote "gaming hiccups".
It's not a technical thing but what I really meant to say was that due to recent real life intrusions and demands, my participation in our humble little empire (scoring wise) has been off and on but mostly off lately.
I think it's because like you and many others I now find that playing anything less than Immense or Gigantic feels less than galactic in scope as far as game immersion goes. I find that if for instance if I'm well into an Immense map (game) and can't get back to it for weeks at a time I tend to lose a feel for it for lack of a better term. When life is going smoothly I can get in an hour or two almost ever other day which keeps me focused on the game and when life does allow me to sit down and play for a few precious hours it actually has a true calmative affect.
I'm not saying it's a panacea for all of life's little ills but for me at least, damn near close!
Well said particlewave. I often find Galciv calming when life's stresses are mounting too. It can be a nice refuge...I think it's that way partially because every round you can accomplish concrete and discrete achievements whether colonizing a new planet, capturing a resource or whatever. I like accomplishing things and Galciv serves up a little appetizers throughout the game and, of course, a sumptuous repast when you finish a long game and do well.
Ah, I get you now, particle. And I surely agree about the soothing value of clicking along with a nicely 'galactic' map.
CL, I've pretty much always played in window mode because it was also more stable-seeming on my weak old rig. The Vista hibernation crashes have gotten steadily less common as the game and the OS updates came along.
But that last one I had might just have done the "lack of a better term" thing that particle describes. Not sure whether I'll try to pick up from my last autosave or just start fresh. I'd prob'ly not hesitate to do the latter if I wasn't interested in seeing the Gerontocracy keep tottering along.
Great job clanlindsey!
As a matter of fact, hats off to everyone and that goes out to a few of our more silent but active contributors as well.
Comforting to see our little empire still has a pulse.
Thanks PW!
To my fellow Gerontocrats,
It is with deep regret that I must announce that the General shall leave the lovely grounds of the Gerontocracy. The General has enjoyed both his time here and your company, and this decision was neither taken lightly nor is it any reflection on the Gerontocracy. To the contrary, you are an absolutely fine bunch. No, the sad truth is that the Kzin have made furious gains in the Metaverse and the General's blood-brother, Count Alejandro Montoya, has written and begged for his assistance in stemming the rising tide of fur and fangs. So the General rides to the aid of the Tyranny for the nonce. The General leaves you two gifts in parting however.
The first is the promise of reinforcements for the Gerontocracy. There should be much war booty to be gained from the struggle with the Kzin and when the General has mustered the necessary sheckels to purchase a second copy of GalCiv to secure three more combatants, the first of them is promised to the Gerontocracy. The second parting gift is a large bar credit at the Twilight Pub. If you visit the pub, all your drinks are on the General, and he has left a war chest of his secret battle strategies there for the Gerontocrats, including his top-secret strategy guide to million plus point TA games. The General shall post continuous letters to the Pub, for your benefit, updating his strategies as his experience grows in fighting the cunning and fearsome Kzinti. He shall also keep the Pub kitchens well supplied with Kzinti nuggets so the brave troops of the Gerontocracy shall be forever well-victualed.
Embird, ParticleWave, and GW...thank you for allowing the General to be part of your excellent empire. He humbly begs that you do not take exception to this parting and further asks that you accept these gifts with the seriousness in which they are bestowed. They are not made lightly. GW especially, the General truly understands how much you care about the Gerontocracy and sincerely hopes you will be understanding of the call to arms the General must answer. The General hopes that his collection of war secrets, bestowed freely and with pride upon you, are worth far more to the Gerontocracy collectively than the occasional foray the General musters here.
I salute you all,
General Jebediah Stormcrow
Ach, ye fool of a cur. 'T'aint the bucks ye gives to Stardock but the clicks ye give ter yer empire.
(Apogies to real Scots. I have gene-line connections to the Highlands and have been lucky enough to know a damned interesting modern Scot, but I'm just an old son of the new South here in the Colonies.)
So long General Jebediah Stormcrow (CL). It was nice to have you in our empire, even if only for a short while.
Best of luck to you and your future endeavors. Heed your calling!
We now place a ceremonial rocker with the General`s name engraved upon it on our `Porch of Heroes`, as has been our custom in honoring past great gerontocrats gone MIA, with the understanding that no one shall rest their weary flea bitten tukis upon said rocker in the event that said hero may one day grace us with their return to the empire at some future date (or somethin` to that effect, basically we just nail the sucker down to immobilize it).
The war chest of secret strategies is much appreciated sir... we are eternally grateful for this wealth of knowledge you have seen fit to bestow upon us!
A single malt is in order... cheers to you CL!
Goodbye CL I understand your reasons for leaving us. I too was once a member of a much larger empire, but my humble, infrequent contributions were totally lost amongst many "heavy hitters" like yourself. I feel my efforts make more of a difference here.
Thanks guys. My Drath strategy is posted for you at the Twilight Pub now. Good hunting!
@Embird: is your avatar a Jim Fitzpatrick or Mucha image? I like it.
I'm pretty sure I've read a novel with that image on the cover, but I can't remember the title.
She is called "The Moon Queen ". Not sure who the artist is.
Just checking in. I thought I'd say hi and see how everyone is doing in our humble little empire.
I was shocked to see that our fearless leader had fallen off the list over at the AltMeta but not really surprised considering ghostwes's long absence from the game. I was perilously close to the abyss myself since I had not submitted a game since January of this year and my Alt scores were in free fall as it were. Anyway, I managed to submit a game recently but forced to play a medium size map for sake of speed and convenience, all due to my sporadic gameplay as of late, and besides, I was somewhat fearful of forgetting how to play the game if I stayed away from it for much longer!
My fears were unwarranted I think, if you play this game long enough it's like riding a bicycle... wait, that sounds suspiciously Freudian, oh well, you get my meaning.
So, how's your gaming going lately? Are you riding a Huffy or a Seven these days?
I've finally been getting in a few turns lately on the game I've been playing for months--my AltMeta rank is plummeting also. Part of my dawdling is a frustration hangover from losing several turns' work in a hibernation-related crash, but the bigger culprit is my excessive interest in the Elemental project. I'll be peeved with myself if I don't get my GC2 game finished sometime next month.
Sorry to hear about your troubles GW. I can sympathize, even though my circumstances differed from yours. While trying to move up a level in difficulty (painful) I became totally frustrated with the game I had started. I think i had chosen a poor game set up from the get go, rare everything, basically lots of space and little else on an Immense map. Needless to say it didn't go the way I had anticipated and soon found myself faltering big time even with multiple restarts employing different strategies. I finally gave up and put it (the game) down for quite some time before regaining my enthusiasm only recently.
I hate to admit it but I ran back to my comfort level like a dog with it's tail between it's legs but in all honesty I didn't do myself any favours by choosing that crazy set up especially on a first time level up.
Good thing you mentioned Elemental, it's development has escaped my notice lately. I'm also looking forward with some inerest in this title.
Cheers!
Well, my frustrating old game has become a whole new game thanks to the assassination event. I'd carefully built up an alliance network and arranged wars against the non-members with an eye towards coasting to an influence win. The crash interrupting that low-click ride was what put me off for quite a while, but now there's a galaxy-wide war going on because the leader that got assassinated while visiting my empire was one of my large group of allies. So now I'll need a lot more clicking to finish, but there's a lot more to watch.
Hello fellow Gerontocracys. I think 4th on the altameta is respectable position - our numbers are much smaller than other empires. So just sending encouragement out to others in the empire of us. I was away from the game for a long time and just reinstalled on my laptop again.
