Hey guys need some help. I purchased Gal Civ 4 through Steam in late February. Installed and ran just fine on my system. I have a I9-10850k with 32gb ddr4 and a radeon 7900 xtx running on windows 10. Got around 30ish hours of gameplay in with not a single crash. I got a bit busy and didn't login for maybe 3 days and went to get in the other day and now I get (887a0005) The GPU device instance has been suspended. Use GetDeviceRemovedReason to determine the appropriate action. Reason : Interal error in the driver. This happens as soon as I go to load a previous saved game. So far i've tried setting the resolution down from 4k along with turning all graphics settings to minimum and even windowed mode (3 screens). I find after I restart the game the second or third time it will lock my computer up hard until I have to hit the reset switch to get back. After the 1st time though I noticed that the adrenaline software from AMD gets buggy as hell and a lot of the screens won't load until I reboot. I've done a clean sweep of the AMD drivers and a full reinstall of the game with no luck. Its the only game giving me the errors. I can load other high graphics games that will max out the gpu with 0 issues. Even loading a new game does absolutely nothing. As soon as the game loads it crashes except now i'm not even getting the screen showing the error message it just drops me right to stardock crash report and if I want to send one. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
Hard to say what may be causing this all of a sudden. Was your drivers updated between now and before it started crashing ? Else you could try these baseline troubleshooting commands.
In an Elevated Command Prompt (in run, type cmd and press ctrl-shift-enter), do these commands one after the other:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Else switch to the Insider build on Steam, see if that helps.
Hi Draver i'll give that a try. As to drivers thats a no to any changes in drivers. Last update was Feb 17 2026 when the latest ones came out so before I even purchased the game. Out of curiosity i've never heard of an insider build for steam how to do you switch to that? Thanks.
-Just wanted to add I can load other games like ARK- Survival Ascended at ultra settings with 0 issues right now or Civ 7 runs perfectly fine as well. Not a hair of a glitch or crash to be found.
Looks like there was some corrupt files after the scan. Opened the text file but its a massive dump of data not sure where to verify what was repaired. Not sure if it had anything to do with the multiple crashes I had trying to run the game or forced restarts maybe? Thanks.
Tried to run a game after the checks and zilch on the functioning. It does crash even faster now though. It'll load into the game like before but now it won't even open the game to the point where I see a ship. It crashes so fast its like I alt tabbed right out.
Thank you for trying this out. Yeah it's a good idea to restart your PC after running both commands. Make sure your Windows is up to date as well. You're on Windows 11 I presume ?
For the insider build, in Steam, if you click the cog wheel (manage) at the top right, then select properties and go to the Game Versions & Betas and switch to Insiders, that should put you on the latest build.
Also, I presume that you are not using any mods ?
Also, when reinstalling, have you tried to delete or at least rename this folder: %userprofile%\Documents\My Games\GalCiv4 ? Let the game recreate it, then transfer your save file from the renamed folder to it. See if that fix your issue!
Also, if that doesn't work, it may be useful to look into debug.err in %userprofile%\Documents\My Games\GalCiv4 see if there's anything in there pointing towards what could be problematic.
Else, are you using OneDrive ? Any Anti-Virus beside Windows Defender ?
I'm on Windows 10 at the moment (didn't care much for windows 11 its very buggy with some of my work software so i've stayed away after attempting it once).
I'm trying to find the cog wheel manage button but I have nothing like that on my version of steam. I've gone through quite a few different settings like my profile and account details under my username but am not seeing any option in there for that. Even settings i'm not seeing it in there.
No mods at all.
I'll try the delete or rename the folder bit and see.
Will look at the debug.err file and see what its showing up as.
I don't use OneDrive or any antivirus whatsoever (windows defender is disabled unless I manually scan). Thanks i'll get back to you on these things I try.
I noticed the last line in the debug.err file has this :
Debug Message: CD3D11Renderer::GetImageInfoFromFile FAILED: Memory allocation failed. Could not load info from file "D:\STEAMLIBRARY\STEAMAPPS\COMMON\GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS IV\GFX\SPACE\BlueGas.dds" ???????
About the cog wheel, you can also just right click the GCV4 tile and click properties, that'll open the settings for the game.
Is virtual memory enabled in Windows 10 ?
I presume your D drive is an SSD ? If not, what happen if you install the game on one of your SSD ?
Ok I've got insiders edition enabled now. As for virtual memory yes it is enabled. My D drive is part of my C drive I just keep my C drive partitioned off the 2TB SSD. 500 gigs for my main stuff and 1.5TB for games etc. All the same drive. I'll give this insiders edition a try now. Thanks.
You're welcome.
I was able to get into the game finally. What I did after checking virtual memory it was set to whatever windows 10 defaulted to (in this case it was set to 512mb for some odd reason). I set it to auto and now i'm able to load any game. Doesn't it seem strange that i'm running 32gb of ram and need a massive paging file in order to run any game of this? I could understand if an old saved game sure but starting a new one seems odd to me.
Really glad you managed to fixed it! Some things are mysterious indeed.
