So here we go again. As I've mentioned a few times already, I have been having trouble with the drop target window in Groupy 2. I know it was an incompatibility with an App I use. I spent an entire day (and I don't mean wall time either) Scouring the code looking for any reason why there would be an issue. Of course without knowing exactly how groupy does its thing I'm kind of flying blind. I was also working on improving drawing since I had quite a bit of flicker and stutter. Now bear in mind I use groupy "Solely" for this one App. Since its a single project app I typically have between 13 and 18 of them open so groupy is kind of a must. That being said I decided to try it with some other window types. I tried combining My app with other windows such as explorer and notepad and even Edge. It seemed to work better but it still happened. Next I decided to try it with other windows Exclusive. I.e. Notepad and Edge w/o My app. Same Issue.
My next step was to see if there was a conflict with versioning. Sometimes I simply Install over when a new beta comes up. Bear in mind during this phase I completely removed said product, rebooted, reinstalled w/e version, rebooted again, and then performed my tests. I did this every single time. Prior to testing I ran a Windows update to make sure I'm at the latest and no conflicting update/reboot cycle would occur.
My first step was to remove all SD products. Since I only use Start11 and Groupy it was easy. I first removed groupy (See methodology above). Then Start11. Once both were removed I decided to hold off on reinstalling. Decided I would work on my app for a while. Suddenly I noticed it launches faster with absolutely zero flicker on resize. With no change in the code. So now I decide to try Groupy. Redownloaded the latest beta of V2 reinstalled (See how above). While the flickering was still gone the droptarget window issue was back. Again it didn't matter which window I used it still happened.
Now I'm starting to work through the versions. I have an installer for every version of groupy (including betas) ever released. However before doing so I figured I start on the latest release of V1. Again using the above method. Low and behold zero issues. Same App, Same Binary works perfectly with V1 but fails with V2 it is definitely a V2 issue. Whatever change was made in V2 is now incompatible with My System.
I considered for a minute that maybe it was an issue with Start11 since I have only did an install over since the first release (what about 6-8 betas?) however installing the latest Start11 V2 and still no problems (With Groupy 1).
I really want to use Groupy 2 but it is broken. Perhaps if I knew more on how groupy worked I could track down the issue.
Also note that with groupy 1 I don't get a "Cant find symbols for Some_Groupy_Dll.dll" warning when debugging in VS yet I did with Groupy 2. Not really an issue since I don't have the pdb's for it but Groupy 1 doesn't give the warnings. Go figure.
That is a decent guess, you would probably have to flag down Neil for that answer. My other guess would be the GPU's actual driver as Basj said earlier. A while back I had a Nvidia driver that had a conflict with Windows 11 and thus also caused problems with start 11. The solution at that time was to roll back to an older driver.
If it is a DX issue, then it all comes down to whether would have a benefit (past groupy 2 itself) with a GPU upgrade. AMD does have some fine cards as well. I know the 6700xt is a very popular card for example.

I'm more concerned with the card itself. I tried it first with no drivers installed (just after a format) then tried every version for that card (23.3.1 being the oldest) directly from AMD. The odd part is groupy 1 works fine. I can't say if its a W11/DX version issue with the specific card or If there's an issue with my card. Replacing it with another (much older) AMD card works but that could also be the fact that it doesn't support the latest DX. If I have to get a new GPU I'm ok with that (I mean I was going to eventually anyway) but I would like to know before plunking down the cash.
I only got the 5500XT because at the time it was the current generation and Microcenter didn't have any of the other cards.
I usually use Nvidia cards so I am a little behind in AMD. I looked up your card. The 5500XT is only one generation behind and should be able to run dx12 (maybe not the latest as it is about one generation behind). The 6700xt would give you a decent graphics bump, but if you are a non gamer it might not be necessary. Of itself the 5500xt seems pretty capable unless there is an actual issue with the card itself. i.e. the card died on you or isnt drawing enough power.
Well it's 2 Gens old now the 7XXX line does exist. Ya I don't "need" all that gfx power I've always just got the best (or close) just in case. I too am thinking its just my card. ATM the only thing I have handy is too old to use. In fact it only has a single DP and a DVI (I think) So I wouldn't even be able to run all my monitors (Well only 2 now but I plan on adding more). IDK I guess I'll find out. Unless I get a donation I will have to wait until I get a new one.
I haven't had an Nvidia card in probably longer than most ppl have been alive these days lol. I do keep up with the tech (Reviews, specs etc..) but have no personal experience with them. I just can't wrap my head around paying as much for a single piece of HW when for the same money I can build an entire box. Especially for someone like me who likely won't use most of its "features".
Groupy does not specifically use the GPU though the OS will use it for various operations such as blending windows.
A conflict is most likely to be some sort of addon software rather than the core driver itself.
But yet with my testing I literally had nothing else installed. At least no 3rd party software. Just an updated latest W11 ISO and Groupy 2. I kind of expected it to work in that situation and then I would one by one reinstall the various things I use until I found the culprit. What got me on the GPU train of thought was I decided to try it on another computer where the only difference was the GPU. It worked fine on that machine.
So the next thing I tried was replacing my GPU and low and behold it worked. I even reinstalled my saved image I made prior to formatting and it still worked (with the other GPU). Once I replaced my GPU with the newer one it failed again. Despite running AMDs Removal tool and trying every version of driver from them.
This is why I'm thinking it's a HW issue. Either "my" card has gone wrong in some way or there's a problem with that model and DX I don't know.
Where I'm certain however is that there must be a difference between groupy 1 and 2. I think it's that difference that exposed the issue.
In short Groupy 1 works perfectly (for what it does that is) Groupy 2 works in all other aspects. I have no idea what the problem itself is but I am leaning more towards HW. I can still use G2 I just can't use various settings like modifiers.
I'm not sure of anything else I can try to maybe isolate the issue. If you can think of something I haven't tried I would be very appreciative otherwise I guess I'll have to wait until I can get a newer card.
For you consideration
5500 vs 6700
If you were to upgrade your card to either the 6600 or 6700 the performance is a pretty nice bump. Technology in general had a pretty nice jump in that time frame. I do realize that the 7xxx series does exist, but it is easier for me to ignore because the jump in performance is no where near as great as the jump from 5xxx to 6xxx was.... Unless you get the most expensive model that is.
If you were to upgrade your card, maybe see if there is a good return policy just in case.
I know you don't like nVidia cards, but as a reference I'm still running my 1080Ti which is really old on an Intel i7-7700K/Z270 system with 32GB DDR4 3200. It does have 11GB GDDR5X VRAM though. I run 3D modeling software to create renderings and videos of home designs on Windows 11 Beta 22635.3276. I don't see the issues you're having on my system.
Roger that. My main issue with nvidia is they are just overpriced. A new 6600 is $180 even a low end nvidia is easily 400+ Of course for your workload it's likely worth it. I may try an nvidia if I can find a reasonable one. I dont do the online shopping thing I prefer brick and mortar.
You're right about that. I paid $830.00 for the 1080Ti in 2018!
