I disabled taskbar preview thumbnails in Windows but when I install Start11, now they are showing, I hate that, please give us an option to disable taskbar preview thumbnails
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. I tried disable Taskbar Preview on my Windows 11 system, using this guide : https://www.wisecleaner.com/think-tank/459-How-to-Disable-Taskbar-Thumbnail-Preview-on-Windows-11.html. And without Start11 installed. But, Taskbar preview thumbnails still appear on my system. Please tell me how you manage to get the taskbar preview thumbnail not appearing on your system without Start11. So, I can try reproduce it on my system.
Thank you.Basj,Stardock Community Assistant.
This reg file works on both Window 10 and 11, after applying it, you need to reboot for it to take effect:
Taskbar Thumbnail Preview
Extract the ZIP file then double click on Turn Off Taskbar Thumbnail Previews.reg
It works fine but when Start11 is installed, taskbar preview thumbnails are back, SUPER annoying they keep coming in the way of my workflow as I am hovering the icon. I am using the latest Beta Start11 2.0.5 on Windows 11 23H3 Build 22631.2506
I am sorry, I am not able to use reg hack to test something. However, I have forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

Start11 should have no impact on if taskbar thumbnails show as they are provided by the OS.
Are you sure the version of Windows you are using still supports that?
but it does, without installing Start11, the reg trick works, I even tried disabling taskbar thumbnail previews via the group policy editor and it still doesn't work. (User Configuration > Start Menu and Taskbar > Turn off taskbar thumbnails
I disabled "Let Start11 Enhance the taskbar" in the settings and now the thumbnail previews don't show respecting the registry tweak that I did which has always worked for years on Windows 10 and 11. This bug IS related to Start11
Seems like the issue is fixed after today's update to v2.0.0.6
Awesome, really glad to hear that.
Thank you,
It still seems to be an issue if the Start11 taskbar enhancement option is enabled.
Hello,Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, which version you're using on your system currently?
Was using version 2.0.0.6
Start11 does not implement those, they are OS provided so I am at a loss as to why you are seeing them and apparently not without Start11.
The latest update (2.03) appears to have resolved the issue for me with the taskbar enhancement re-enabled.
Update: No, there still is an issue / conflict with taskbar enhancements and the registry to disable previews. It is intermittent though, but turning off taskbar enhancements stops taskbar previews popping up entirely.
Hi, I am using the latest Start11 update and having the exact same issue. No solution works for the Thumbnail removal. It appears and sometimes even get stuck and doesn't disappear after the cursor is moved away. Please fix this bug!
Start11 is also replacing the alternative list format with a single line / scollable version
I have the latest version of Start11 and Windows 11. The taskbar preview is driving me nuts. If Stardock can't fix it, I'm going to have to stop using it. Is this going to be fixed?
Hello,I have forwarded your problem/question again to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.
I have taken a look at this and am not seeing the problem here any different than without S11 though the link above does not work and no download happens so I manually did the ExtendedUIHoverTime tweak.
I was able to make it show previews and get stuck on screen without Start11 running.
This can be reproduced by doing the following.
1) Have multiple windows open for a given process (say explorer).
2) Click on the taskbar button for the app. The thumbnails will appear
3) Once open clicking on anything other than the thumbnail preview will not make it go away.
4) If you click on one of the windows and then move your mouse back over the taskbar button you will find it will popup the previews but only on that one taskbar button and only once until the next time you do step 2.
Is this perhaps what everyone has been seeing? If not what exactly is the behaviour, is it showing on all apps when it shows, or just the last app you switched to perhaps via the taskbar?
Are you using combine mode taskbar or uncombined and if combined does it continue if you enable uncombined and then disable showing the text.
Start11 does not implement this window or the mouseover behaviour, Neither can it control how it appears so it cannot alter if it shows as a line of thumbnails or a menu/list.
No the issue is that I don't want the taskbar thumbnail previews and even if I did, it is very buggy, look at the below video.
I have a tweak to disable taskbar thumbnail previews and when I hover over any open window like a file explorer window or a program, I don't see any thumbnail preview which is what I want but the moment Start11 is installed and I set the option to let it enhance the taskbar, this bug happens where now it shows the thumbnail preview.
I am surprised that even after months of reporting this bug it is still there even in the latest BETA 2.0.7.1
the issue is that I have disabled Taskbar Thumbnail previews using this reg edit:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "ExtendedUIHoverTime"=dword:0001d8a8
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ExtendedUIHoverTime"=dword:0001d8a8
But if you enable the let Start11 enhance my taskbar feature, it still shows the taskbar thumbnails and not only that, it is so buggy that if you right-click on an open Window to close it, it keeps disappearing, look at this video:

I am using Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Build 22631. 3296

Please uninstall Start11
THEN REBOOT
Then reinstall the very latest beta.
That behaviour you see with the right click menu reminds me of something we altered in the very latest beta with the right click menu being cancelled when a thumbnail shows. The fact that it shows in your video suggests perhaps the latest build isn't installed correctly and rebooting having uninstalled may help there.
What I can say is unfortunately we do not show those thumbnails, they are purely an OS feature. Altering your OS to attempt to stop them showing isn't 100% effective as we have noted before and I suspect this remain as is as it would not be a bug in Start11 itself, merely a limitation of the method you are using to try to stop those showing (something Microsoft do not support themselves)
I would suspect right clicking the taskbar is the trigger for them showing and this action may well be bypassing your timeout change.
The thing is, this was a fresh installation of Start11 2.0.7.1 Beta I never had any other version installed earlier. do you still want me to reinstall it?
omg i only had to disable "Enhance taskbar" and re-enable it and my hover issues went away. Now its just normal hover preview behaviour, not "sticky hover behaviour that lasts forever and ever". Now it acts according to the registry hack for delay i made as well, NICE. Easy Peasy woo!
I absolutely love Start11 - using Windows11 without it would be a nightmare. As much as I love Start11 I absolutely hate that dreaded preview thumbnails. I used this method to delay hover time to 90 seconds which effectively is turning them off:https://www.elevenforum.com/t/change-hover-time-to-show-taskbar-thumbnail-previews-in-windows-11.6366/
It does work most of the time however I do had problems with them showing up again. Its very finicky and I cant understand why this cant be simply option to turn that nonsense off... But considering how default start menu looks I think its too much to ask from Microsoft...
Anyways, Stardock, you did wonders with start menu. It would be wonderful if you found way to somehow prevent these ultra annoying previews from showing up. I totally understand if its something you cant change but if you could take care of it and add option "stop preview icons from showing up" it would be fantastic. Either way - thank you for saving my sanity and making Start11!
