We continue our look at the key warships of the Trader Emergency Coalition with the Akkan-class battlecruiser.
The Akkan’s pre-war design had two main variants: one as a large colony transport ship, and the other as a leisure vessel. Once the war began, the Akkan was outfitted with heavier armor, weapons, and a basic hangar bay, though its primary role continued to be that of a transport.
Now after decades of conflict, the latest Akkan-class has taken on more of a command-and-control role on the battlefield. Many of the original weapon systems have been removed to be replaced with more dedicated colony pods, trade bays, and other support systems.
Hangar Removal & Mobile Trade Port: With their vast trade networks proving vital to the continued war efforts of the TEC, the Akkan’s hangar deck was removed in order to support a mobile trade port. This allows the Akkan to secure trade routes through dangerous areas of space and keep the vital flow of resources from being interrupted.
Enhanced Broadcast Systems: The Akkan is capable of hosting advanced broadcasting technology, which helps link and support allied units. This results in a bonus to weapon cooldown rates, greatly improving rates of fire against enemies.
Planetary Bombardment Cannon: A feature new to all of the TEC latest retrofits is the planetary bombardment cannon. This devastating weapon replaced the older Ion Cannon, which grew to be less effective against newer enemy designs.

How come its both reddish and turquoise? Can you pick 2 colors for your color scheme ala Homeworld now? Or is the reddish hull just reflecting red color from nebula or sun?
Those are just the two team-colors the artist went with.
New Akkan does look nice. It's a shame about the ion cannon though, I'd much rather it kept it than its rate of fire buff.
Yes.
Thanks for the update! Looks great! Miss the antennas though!Planetary Bombardment Cannon: A feature new to all of the TEC latest retrofits is the planetary bombardment cannon.Didn't all cap ships have planetary bombardment cannons? Or is this now limited to certain capital ships only? The colo ability of the Akkan seems to be lacking at the current build as ships do no longer consume AM during for phase jumps which was the main weakness of colony frigates due to their slow AM regeneration. Now there is no real need to spend an ability point on your valuable cap ship and it is always more efficient right now to build a Protev.
Ship is exactly the same on both sides. 🙄
They did somewhat, but it went from being an afterthought to an actual integrated piece of the ship.
Bombardment is still the only way to capture a planet?
The colonize ability does give a discount to planetary upgrades, allowing you to get a planet setup a good bit cheaper. That said, I don't know if its really worth it compared to better trade.
Still.. to comment on this lack of firepower...
Ironclad should at least make sure that this ship has some additional AA defense like Light autocannon or more Point defense Autocannon which effective against strike craft, corvette and projectiles launcher like missiles and torpedoes to a certain degree although removing laser turret make it quite weak...
Unless they are willing to add 1 offensive ability to compensate for reduced firepower in order to balance it out
