I would like to know when moderation for the GC4 Workshop will be up and running?
It didn't take long for one user to start taking others users ship design contributions and start pirating and re-upload them back to the GC4 Workshop under his own name without consent or permission of the original authors.
This has been going on for 7 years on the Steam workshop and thankfully with good moderators violations became fewer and fewer. I was really hoping it would not happen here on the GC4 Workshop.
I would also like to know what the rules for the GC4 Workshop will be and what the policy for violating workshop rules will be?
Any information in regard to GC4 workshop moderation is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
We need to get some volunteers. Let’s use this thread as a sign up.
I would like to recommend both Yarlen and Rhonin the Wizard. They have both been fantastic at moderation of the GC3 Steam Forums and Workshop. I would like to see it continue here on the GC4 Workshop.
MrStarTrek /Airmaster as one of the most prolific producers and the most offended against you should volunteer to moderate the workshop. Yarlen is one of the games devs and Rhonin is already a Mod. BTW I am Ghost 88 on Steam.
@Frogboy am ready willing and able to help moderate the Discord and have already told Schism I was interested when he asked me.
I strongly support this. I really like to make desings for the community, but sadly there are people out there which are downloading my desings und put their name on them.
Ok I wish to be a volunteer.
Just let it be known if I am allowed to become GC4 Workshop moderator, I am not taking any prisoners with habitual offenders. I'm have a very strong distain for this blantantly disrespectful behavior by players who steal, pirate and redistribute ship designs and civs without permission of the original author/creator.
I'm sure you all know why.
Youze my hero I think.
When Mr StarTrek is volunteering for the task he has my support. He is a very active veteran designer for Galactic Civ.
I like you have been designing and posting Faction and Ship designs for the community since becoming a Gal Civ 3 founder and sadly have seen on the Gal Civ 4 w/shop another one of my designs pirated and posted under another name....so with great dismay i will no longer be posting any more until this problem has been sorted.......MrStarTrek is aware of my feelings regarding this issue and i would like to see him take up the position to be the workshop moderater...
.........
I am a minor contributor. In GCIII I created about 45 Civs which I uploaded to the server and about half of mine were pirated. While part of me was happy that someone thought well enough of my civ designs to do that it is still rather dubious. I can not make ships designs very well and really enjoy those such as Airmaster who put so much effort and do a great job with designs and know it has to rankle their skin to know others just blatantly rip off designs. I can help with whatever ya'll need as well even though I am not a prolific poster like a lot of you I am on the forums and site nearly every day.
To shed a little light on this situation.
The issue is not moderators being available right now, though that is something that is desireable to be added and as some here know we've already talked about doing.
The issue is we don't have the tools in place on the backend to easily and effectively moderate the workshop right now. This is something that is currently still planned but I do not have an ETA for when they will be available.
I agree with you Schism and I know Moderation tools are still in development. I think most here are a bit taken back at how quickly it started happening and mostly by just one disrespectful user.
Though we do need moderators to monitor workshop violations. As you well know this happens quite often to the most prolific contributors such as Omni, Starmac, myself and several others on the Steam GC3 Workshop. I think everyone just wants to help and doing what they can to that endevour. I was asked to volunteer because many here know this is something I and many others have had to constantly deal with for several years on Steam.
I just hope we get some kind of moderation soon because many of the stolen and pirated ship designs are still up on the GC4 Workshop. I hope it gets taken care of soon.
It's not easy seeing a design a user made listed under another users name knowing it's not their design, knowing it's stolen, they never asked for permission to use it or upload it and worse taking credit away from the original author.
I honestly understand and do not blame Starmac for no longer wanting to contribute to the GC4 workshop due to users stealing and pirating his ship designs. I stopped for a long time contributing to the GC3 Steam Workshop for this very reason. I am still waiting for one of my ship designs that was stolen, pirated and redistributed under another users name to be removed from the GC4 Workshop.
Anyone notice not even Omnibus has made a single ship design for GC4? Anyone ever notice he no longer contributes to GC3 Steam Workshop. Bet ya he knows about players pirating and stealing ship others ship designs which he also hates as much as I do. Frankly, I would not blame him either if he's decided not to contribute to GC4 Workshop. The GC3 and GC4 community loses one of its best custom content providers.
At this time I am considering no longer contributing as well. There may be others who are also considering this. Some will say not to let the bad apples spoil the rest but that ship sailed on long ago. Until there is some guidelines, strict rules and moderation tools in place for reliable moderation of the GC4 workshop I feel its best I withhold contributing my ship designs until something reliable and concrete is in place to moderate the workshop and have the people like me willing to volunteer to help make it happen.
I have very strong doubts I will be allowed to become a workshop moderator due to my harsh attitude towards players who steal, pirate and take credit away from those that did the work. After several years dealing with this problem on Steam I no longer have the patience for those players and users who do this. I can tell you right now its no accident they do this, its deliberate. There is actually no way to upload a ship design or race civ/faction to workshop by accident. I will no longer buy that excuse.
Who loses if the most prolific content providers stop contributing?
The entire GC3 and GC4 player community loses.
i'd just like to voice my support for mrstartrek being a moderator for this. he seems to have a good blend of knowledge and passion on the subject, and it sounds like he would be very active and vigilant about this, which is exactly what is needed, i think.
Here are the screenshots of the ship designs that have been stolen, pirated and uploaded to GC4 workshop under the names of the violators as seen in the screenshots. The original authors names are typed in under each screenshot.

As you can see its becoming a problem. EDIT.....Thieves are editing designs by editing ship parts sizes plus adding additional parts and saving as new ship designs by renaming design to circumvent the upload restrictions already in place. This is how they are doing it.
The original designers are not receiving the credit they deserve but the thieves are getting the downloads and credit for our ship designs they stole and pirated yet had no right to upload to the workshop or receive credit for works they did not create for GC4.
Note who the habitual violator is.
This is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE!
This isn't my end of the Stardock universe....so I'm next to useless, but I think I could put my vote behind MrStarTrek as it's not just about being eager...it's fundamentally about knowing your 'end of the Stardock universe', preferably both long and well...
One of the things people have to get their heads around as a Moderator is how not to go public with 'things' ...
Sounds good, I’ll see where the moderation tools are and follow up. We also could use additional moderators so please keep posting here,.
I agree with you about what should and shouldn't be public Jafo. But sometimes in rare occasions it's necessary. âšī¸
Yes, I go by Airmaster on Steam and Airmaster64 on Epic games if anyone wants to add me. đ
And thank you Frogboy! Please keep us posted?
Yeah thank you for showing the pirated ships.
You're welcome Navinor. I always support my fellow ship designers. I got your back.đ
and the main offender is an 83... son of a... well for the record i'm Paratu1701 on epic (made it before i realized this account with this name was still here from 15 yrs ago). only one i've actually liked and downloaded so far is the defiant... awesome ship
and while i'm def against pirating this stuff, for those that are making small changes or something and wanting to put them back up there as a slightly different version maybe... is there any way to make it so that any modified ship put back up there includes the original creator so they always get full credit? or would it be better if everything put there had to be built from scratch?
I strongly believe that for the many designers new and long standing need moderators to be able to protect their work from misuse and feel that their hard work will be protected I would there fore like to be considered as a moderator.
Yes it would be best if everyone just created their own designs from scratch and shared them with the community. I feel using the workshop is a privilege not a right and as a privilege it can be revoked for blatant abuse and inconsideration of other users designs.
My thoughts for workshop guidelines.
* If a user wants to modify another users original design it should be mandatory with the workshop privilege to contact the original ships designer and get their "EXPLICIT" consent before uploading their design to workshop and credit to the original designer MUST be given and shown in the description. NO EXCEPTIONS.
( Note: Original ship designers reserve the right to politely refuse such requests and say NO. User asking for consent must be able to take NO for an answer without argument. User asking for consent can be reminded he can create his own ships in the ship designer should his request for consent be refused by the original designer. )
* Users should not upload a design they DID NOT originally create without original designers permission and consent. Furthermore, a moderator should also be able to verify user has original authors consent to upload said work to workshop under his own name and must have credit of original designer name clearly listed in the description. NO EXCEPTIONS.
* Users who's original works are stolen and pirated are strongly encouraged to report violations and should give the necessary information to verify if there is a violation and be wait for the moderators to take acting. Action will not always be swift due to different time zones each moderator lives. Be patient. ( Yeah I know, I'm not always patient, )
* Volunteer Moderators should be encouraged to use their own best judgement. Moderators need to be firm, fair and impartial. No playing favorites. If a moderator is unsure he should defer to a developer or a more experienced moderator for guidance.
* Repeat violators can have their workshop privileges suspended if they continue to disregard rules and guidelines after being warned for the first offense as follows:
First offense= polite warning
Second offense= Stern warning
Third offense= 3 day suspension of workshop privileges
Forth offense= 7 day suspension of workshop privileges
Fifth offense= 30 day ban
Sixth offense= 1 year ban or permanent ban after moderators and a dev discuss if its needed.
* Habitual abusers could have workshop privileges permanently revoked ( total user ban ) if they constantly violate the guidelines and rules after a number of warnings go unheeded regarding users original designs if all moderators and a developer feel its warranted that said violator will not abide by guidelines regardless of warnings and suspensions. OPEN for discussion.
* Volunteer Moderators should be encouraged to follow up with the original designer and let them know action was taken yet keep what action taken confidential.
Please feel free to add or give constructive criticism. Everything is open for discussion and changes so it will be fair and impartial.
Lets dot the i's and cross the t's.
Your thoughts please?
*****I will be editing this repeatedly to clarify and make changes. Please refer back to this post for any changes to my ideas for GC4 workshop guidelines. *******
I strongly recommend Starmac as a volunteer moderator. He too has been a long time contributor and a victim to ship design theft and pirating here and on the Steam GC3 workshop.
Starmac, you got my vote!
that sounds fair i think. in fact you're giving ppl a lot of chances... i would actually take out the stern warning and just go strait from polite warning to 3 day suspension. i think a 3day suspension is a good stern warning
i like the idea of making it all about getting the original creator's consent, since some ppl are very against it and others prob dont mind too much. takes care of the problem of different people wanting different things
