New decade, new thread.
I want to posit this question for everyone on the forums here. In your myriad opinions what do you think were the best and the worst games of the last decade? No rules for this, list as many or as few as you want.
For me personally, going off the games I got around to playing, I am going to go right ahead and say at the top of my head I still think Prey was my fav game of this last decade. Simply because it was a perfect love letter to the old Looking Glass Studio games that I grew up with. Definitely Arkane Studios at their height and a perfect modern example of a "cerebral shooter".
As for my worst game of the last decade that is a harder one to choose. But I am going to go ahead and pick Duke Nukem Forever. That was a truly awful experience that I am still surprised I played through to the end. Kind of impressive in how bad it was both in terms of stale mechanics and downright awful attempts at "comedy". I was never a Duke fan growing up but I fully understand why the fans are so angered by that game.
As of my best games I'd have to chose nothing unique, Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon age 1&3, Fallout New Vegas. Weird but nothing really memorable came out last few yes. I would rather play Freespace 1&2 than anything new.
I would agree with Duke Nukem Forever, still can't explain why I finished it. WH40K Dawn of War 3 was big disappointment and Battlefleet Gothic made by flat space sociaiaty. I would rather play unmastered Homeworld where space ships can fly up and down.
Actually GC3 base game was nothing special too It took crusade to make this game good.
Freespace and Freelancer are like the last great space fighters/sims people still play to this day. I am in it for the long haul with Star Citizen, though No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous have their moments.
Dawn of War 3 was definitely disappointing but nothing like a worst game of the decade for me. There are many worse games even in the strategy space. For example Shallow Space and what happened to that project.
Let's see: If I equate good/bad with how many hours I played a game, then, according to my Steam library, the best game is Civ 5 (close to 1k hours) and the worst Crusader Kings II (1 hour, the system was too complex for me and the learning curve too steep). But StarCraft II doesn't show up, which I also play a lot (the only multi-player game I play). Then there are single player games like X-COM and Subnautica, which I enjoyed quite a lot but only played once (~40 hours each). GalCiv III is close to 200 hours.
I've never bought into that playtime = good argument. Some of the most memorable games to me are games that I maybe only played around 20 hours tops. Certainly in the case of almost any RPG game you maybe get around 50 hours max per playtrhough if it's a deep one and you do every side quest.
Although if you're sinking hundreds of hours into a game it was probably good value for money compared to say... going to the cinema.
If you like freespace, in case you haven't seen it, taka a lok at this:
https://wcsaga.com/
I highly recommend it.
I don't really care about SC MMO but SQ42 is something I wanted to see but my confidence in that developer is now zero.
PS. Archimedean Dynasty anyone ?(little older than 10y....)
I'm not really an expert in games, because after I found Galactic Civilizations 2 Dark Avatar I fased out other games. Most computer games I seen were in the last decade, but not made then.
Probably the worst game I've seen was Spore so much wasted potential in the game.
I'm going to have to say the worst game in the last decade is explorer craft it keeps crashing, and Everytime it crashes I lose its stuff.
Now a game that went from my favorite to my worst was Civilization. In four you found a mix for the perfect game, but in five on up they got rid of manually managing citizens, and allocating spending. This ruined the game for me. Civilization 5 and 6 are on any list as far as the worst games of the decade for me.
It's easier to come up with the worst for me I dont play a lot.
Now as far as the best it would be the game I can't get away from. First I like turn based you get points for not dumping that. I played the ones they call the best Master of Orion 1 and 2. Too bad I didn't play computer games back it the day. It would have been nice to see how galactic civilizations rank against them. By the time I played these I couldn't do it I was already playing Twilight of the Armor, and it is to hard to go backwards for me. Now because, you do more than any other game I have more to do it would be galactic civilizations 3, even the base game 1.7 or better is the best game of the last decade for me.
it took me like 5 screenshots not to want play Civ 6
Civ 5 also went to far but it has some nice things.
I miss classic Civ4 type game in modernised version (UI and graphics mostly)Call to power 2 was also greate civ game for me but right now UI is so outdated is almost unplayable for me.
Played Civ 4 as last of the "classic" civ games, loved it, but haven't played in years.
XCom 2 was probably the biggest game for me in recent years. I'm normally more on the purist side of things, so I do share some of the complaints from XCom vets towards Firaxis' take on this, but after all it was just sooo cool.
One of the bigger disappointments for me was Rome Total War 2 - it's not bad, but IMO not nearly the super-game ppl expected.
I have to give my best award to Civ5.
It's kind of hard to come up with a worst game without some kind of limits as to what games are eligible for this category. It's not too difficult to come up with a game that segfaults, regularly. I could write one in 15 minutes.
And the worst?
If I must pick a worst, and there are no limits as to what games are eligible, then I have to give my "worst" booby prize to the Forum Ban game on the Everything Else forum here.
That one's pretty bad.
I recommend civ 4. It was the best they made.
For me, Fallout 76 is the worst. This game is a waste of time and money. Throughout the game, there are bugs, while the storyline and characters are nothing special. Old graphics, cluttered layout. At first, when I played, I thought I was playing a trial version, not a $ 60 game
Bioshock remastered. Was an absolute blast to play through again and unlock the achievements. Just finished Survivor difficultly with no vitachambers. Remains my counterpoint when people say video games aren’t art. If you have never played it before you are missing out.
most disappointing was civ 6, I doubt it was the worse game.I just didn’t like it and I hate that damn art style. There are some good elements in there but they don’t out weigh the negatives to me. I played Civ 2 back in the day and skipped 3 and 4 got back into five and loved it. 6 seems so strange.
Gotta replay Bioshock sometime.
Best game: Sins Rebellion. Followed by Infinite Adventures: Sea of Stars, original CoD: Black Ops, maybe Deserts of Kharak. Cannot recall anything else i played even closely enough to these, so i guess these are my top by far.
Dont know about the worst, but i was definitely massively disappointed by the new era of real-time strategy games. I bought Planetary Annihilation, Grey Goo, Act of Aggression, all of them failed me and i regretted buying them.
The only one i guess i would consider acceptable is Rusted Warfare, and that not even because i enjoy playing it that much, but because it has unprecedented moddability.
