This is a rant topic...
I find myself really yearning for a game that would provide some kind of longer term fun and excitement... pretty much only game i played lately was Battlefield 1 and even that one i would not consider superb or anything (bar graphics, that part of it is superb indeed). I can usually play it for 1 hour max before i get bored, but at least, i keep return to it. I am looking at new Call of Duty, i guess that one might be bring me slightly more fun, as historically, i used to prefer CoD to BF, but other than that? Nothing to play, nothing to look forward to.
I used to like car/driving games - 2 years ago got Crew, and once again, while hardly super-exciting, it provided bit of fun for maybe 20,30 hours - until i discovered entire map at least. Was thinking about getting Forza Horizon 3, which was supposed to be similar, but it was like 70 EUROs at launch, and even now, one year later, it still is. Thats bit too much for something i may or may not like. God knows i spent that kind of money before on games, i ended playing like 20 minutes eventually. Since then, i am bit more cautious in this regard. Bottom line, no car game for me.
I would buy NHL 18! If only it was on PC! Not buying console for 300 EUROs just to play single game. Been there before, console broke after 2 years, literally one week after its warranty ended. Did not support latest NHL anyway, as it was PS3, and the new ones are only getting released for PS4/Xbone. So no, thank you, no NHL for me.
I thought about indie games! Saw really interesting review for Sunless Sea, made me want to give it a try... so eventually, i got it. Played it like 45 minutes, 40 minutes out of it reading something, 5 minutes playing. Now i like to read, i like adventure games, the part about say Mass Effect i liked the most were the conversations with other characters, not fights or getting new 1+ dmg rifle to upgrade my character. But this? Safe to say, i never returned to it...
RTS games, used to be my fav genre. I have few latest ones in my Steam. I played the shit out of Sins:Rebellion, so i dont really feeling like playing it. The others, barely played, cause they are either utterly tragic or just polished HD versions of the older games i once loved but these days, i require something new, cause i know those all too well. Act of Agression, Grey Goo, Deserts of Kharak fall into first category, Cossacks 3, Homeworld Remastered, Rise of Nations Extended into second. Steered clear of Dawn of War III, cause once again price too steep for something i may not play much.
Special mention to Ashes, i sort of wish StarDock would stop developing it and would focus on some other IP. Preferably Sins I just cant find the love for it. I played like one match against CPU when the update with 2 first super-units was released... and that was it. Lately seen info on another 2 upcoming super-units.... it left me completely emotionless, no excitement at all. I recall when i read the first interview about Rebellion, detailing the changes and additions, and i was like WOW, that super-awesome. I could not wait. And it was. Ashes completely lacks this quality, its a dead-game to me and at this point i dont believe any other addition can change that. The reason to it is IMO simple, too much focus on tech side of things and gameplay aspects, nowhere near enough on overall feel, narrative, setting, faction design, immersion.
Please, for love of god, bring back Sins. Or something Sins-like WW2 based. Something with soul, not another generic sci-fi crap. Buy IP to some scifi show if needed - i would kill for say Babylon 5 based game like Sins. Or BSG, or whatever else. Like real Armada 3
Finally, what about the Star Control. When its gonna be released? Maybe, i could like that one. I like Infinite Space, i assume it may share some similarities, even if not being quite the same...
End of rant.
Between FPS, RTS, racing and sports games you have mentioned a wide variety. I am alittle surprised there are no tactics games among them.
I got Sunless Sea, too, put some hours ino it, but it allways feels like 'those apples you just can't reach'. It was interesting, but I didn't quite like it.
So if you want to check that genre out, I can suggest the two more recent XCOM titles (the newer of which will shortly get an addon) and as an Indie title: Thea - The Awakening (which has a sequal in the making). Thea is reading heavy, too, but other than Sunless Sea I have 100+ hours spent on that and still feel like starting another round of at some point.
Another older title I played the heck out of is Mount and Blade: Warband. It's a strategy/ RPG hybrid. Very sandbox though, I usually listen to an audiobook or podcast in parallel nowadays (Warband 2 is in the making, too).
Why are you surprised by the lack of tactical games in my list? Granted, i named quite a variety of games, but there are still many other genres i did not.
I dont think X-COM is the right kind of game for me. However, i looked into Mount and Blade, since you mentioned it has certain strategic aspects and i have to say, it does have certain charm, i am curious about it. The battles, where you control character of your own, but you have other "units" of your own, reminds me of old action/RTS game called Uprising, which i liked a lot.
The medieval setting though, it made me think of upcoming game called Ancestors, which is probably more classic strategy/tactical game - and perhaps more of my cup of tea.
BTW, In one of the utube videos i watched, there was a mention its similar to Sid Meiers Pirates! - except M&B is on ground, while SM on sea. So i checked that out and have to say, that looks interesting too, maybe even more so than M&B - under assumption you get to improve and upgrade your vessel there, which would be my kind of thing for sure... its kind of oldish however, not that it matters too much. But perhaps there is another, similar newer game.
If you have another suggestion, ideally for a game, which may include tactical combat similar to all the games i mentioned, but has deeper strategic layer, let me know please. If i understood that correctly, you got to upgrade your army, but there is nothing like building bases/castles - to give it classic RTS base-building element - if there was, i guess, that might exactly game for me.
I'm currently playing through Divinity: Original Sin 2. Between this game and the first, that's easily 100+ hours of game
I definitely understand what you're saying. I find myself going back and playing older games lately. I've picked up a few cheap indie games that have been fun, but no blockbuster titles. At this point I'm just waiting for Shadow of War...
Yea, hard to get into games like the good ol' days when you skipped class to play them..
So, here's a non-organized list of games I actually got into in the past handful of years out of the hundreds that I've tried.
1) Pillars of Eternity. Oldschool RPG. Good tactical combat (realtime with pause - has me pausing every frame on harder difficulty ramps). Cannot give this game enough praises - if you like the genre, it's def awesome.
2) Wasteland 2. Real tactical combat game. Excellent game writing too.
3) League of Legends... 'nuff said
4) Darkest Dungeon is a really fun romp
5) Battle Brothers gets a lot of accolades. I probably put in 10-20 hours. Simpler mechanic but similar approach to Fallen Enchantress and its ilk.
6) On my list to play is Torment:Numenera - was waiting post-release for a couple of patch cycles. Should be all patched up now.
My issue, largely, is that I'm really tired and wanting to wind down, rather than "learn" some grand new game. I suspect that this is a lot of what keeps me from getting into a lot of new stuff, that and competition for my time, obviously.
I'll add games if any come to mind later (I'm not super awake at the moment..)
There was no such thing as [computer] 'games' when I was at school.
The one game I do [keep on] playing is FSX ...as it's something I 'skin' aircraft for....and it's ancient...
So i bought 3 big games lately, around Christmas:
- Call of Duty WW2,
- Forza Horizon 3
- PES 2018,
and sadly, as expected, i played them nowhere near enough to justify their price. Oh well.
Fallout 4 RPG FPS especially the computer version open modding.
fort night seems to be the big computer third person shooter right now. I've played shattered suns it is fun. I would recommend Mutant Football Legue as far as computer sports. Grand Theft Auto is always good. If you like first person, and Rpgs I recommend Skyrim. I heard Morrowind is better though. Distant worlds was good. Stellaris sounds good. Legue of Legends. Buldurs Gate I thought was good. My favorite game is Galactic civilizations it sounds like you don't like turn based games though. I need to check out fantasy star it's for the computer now right.
I would like another sins of a solar empire.
Just curious what do you think of my game ideas.

If you're still looking for different games to play, I could just drop a fat list of them here. From there you could prbly take a quick look at each of them and see if any pique your interest. Not sure exactly what you might find fun and interesting, but maybe you'll find something. Anyways, just let me know if you'd want said list and I'll post it.
I can't just get over that Call of duty...it's interesting!
Feel free to give some tips!
What is interesting about that?
To me, its actually interesting game in regard to its changes over past decade and how i am unable to play it successfully anymore. I mean, i was never good at it, but i in older iterations, like original Black Ops, i had my way of playing, which made me keep about 1,35 kill-death ratio over about 400 hours of Team Deatmatch gameplay. Nowadays, the latest games, Black Ops 3 and now WW2. i am dying more than 2x as often than i kill. The reason for that might be i am almost in my mid thirties and the reflexes are gone, or i just dont play nowhere near enough as much to be decent at it, but i am more inclined to believe, that the game evolved to the form, which does not suit my way of playing anymore, be it via increased speed, the map design, weapon handling and other maybe not so obvious aspects... To many people it might be just a stupid CoD, mindless game for kids, but thats not quite the truth, even this game has certain depth and nuances and playing it requires more than fast reflexes.
I am reading good reviews for Subnautica all around and actually thinking about getting it. Apparently it has good story on top of decent gameplay. And its sand-boxey mode might be something for my 8-years old niece to enjoy, when she arrives for holiday - even if i wont end up liking/playing the game too much.
Other than that, i see Age of Empires Definitive Edition and....i already see myself getting bored 2 hours into first match/game. Never much of a fan of Age series anyway...although i have to say it has pretty graphics this one. And when the Age 3 came out, the first time i played it, i was taken away by its visuals, it looked phenomenal for RTS game. Here is hoping that upcoming Age 4 will be WW2 based and something more akin Rise of Nations/Sins in scale than say Company of Heroes.
Regarding Stellaris somebody suggested...i wanted to buy this many times. And this new planetkiller DLC looks awesome. But...i am afraid i might find the game to be boring. Watching the utube vids it seems to be about dealing with sheets and tables... the funny part seems to be the exploration part, but thats actually sad, i watched those vids describing the chain of those various special events, how they unfold, and now playing the game i would not be surprised anymore. It was actually mistake to watch it, i could see myself getting excited, if i actually played the game and triggered one of those events...but now as i know, whats gonna happen...spoiled myself.
Ultimately, instead of buying another game i wont play, i am thinking about spending some money on bunch of Unity assets and play around with Unity engine a bit to do something worthwhile myself - for fun. It will probably lead nowhere, as i cant code/script for shit, but i found some predeveloped RTS engine assets, one even specifically for space RTS, which contains prefabbed and prescripted stuff like units, buidlings, harvesting, movements, cameras, HUD etc...perhaps the scripting wont be required at all and it will be more like modding existing game, just adding my art, etc... things i could handle....we shall see. Wont know until i try.
Excluded a bunch for various reasons, but here you go. Felt that it would be easier to format it in a word doc than here. I'd venture to guess that you are aware of a lot of the games listed, but here's hoping you find something.

There are lots of interesting games available now. The thing is what you really want. Just simply google something randomly then you can have thousands of suggestions. But, one more thing you should remember, whatever you do, dont play any games on top1apk. They are shitty and can make you feel worse.
I think the real issue is having too much many options for most people. You really need to know what you want to play and choose something. Recently I've been enjoying Division 2 and Risk of Rain 2.
Just picked up Division 2 ... I decided to pass on Risk of Rain 2. I did not like the new look of it. I like the first game.
The Division 2 is a great game so far. I'm looking forward to more content and balancing.
As for Risk of Rain 2, if you liked the first one then I'd say you will like the second. After putting a lot of hours into RoR I was very skeptical of a 3D version. I didn't have a lot of confidence that it would work out for them. I am very happy to be wrong though. The game they released in EA plays soooo well. I've put about 27 hours in it as of this post.
@ Timmaigh
Carpetbomb here, been away from Sins designing my board game Verrago: The Globe Game. That's a hint to fill in your new game needs with board games! While they don't allow the state refresh rates of computer games, I've been experimenting with many ways to have board games more efficiently simulate a strong player experience. You may know that I'm a huge strategy fan and I'm designing this board game for all of you Sins players and developers to take a look at. If you want to follow my up and coming strategy game, Verrago: the Globe Game, be my guest. It's on our Facebook page when you search for Veridian Worldcrafters. This is the worlds first magnetic globe game, which allows for unique board game mechanics never before seen in the industry. Engineering innovations precede design innovations. Firstly, the globe acts as a save file, because it uses magnets and is designed to work that way. Secondly, the space saved by having the board on a 26cm diameter circular base allows space for an in depth card game, so it shouldn't be too overwhelming and impossible to keep track of everything. Like us on Facebook at Veridian Worldcrafters to follow the progress for the game and to get a more in depth look.
@Stardock and Ironclad
We know you find inspiration for game mechanics from the board game/tabletop industry, Wink wink, nudge nudge, grin grin. I started playing Twilight Imperium, used my Sins strategic/in-game knowledge as a sort of game design training manual for "how to make a board game into a video game and vice a verse". I'm using that to help fuel an innovative "Strategy framework update" for board games. I'm providing a much higher standard than the "copy+paste and make 25% new" industry standard BS as well. If you feel like getting into a game that's tailored to your feral strategy fans, like us on Facebook at Veridian Worldcrafters. If any of you at Stardock/Ironclad want an exclusive play test while I'm showing my game at Gen Con 2019, be my guest, ya'll are most welcome at my table! (show up in a group and announce yourself, I'm going to be doing a lot of work in a trance like state, observing a current play test or selling people on the game like a feral creature). Also, I'd enjoy collaborating with you on any future projects as a paid consultant.
So i watched the PC Gaming show yesterday and then some Future game show and as usual, there were no games of interest to me presented. Well, few of them, maybe partially, but most likely not enough for me to buy. Like Twin Mirrors from DontNod, the creators of Life Is Strange, might be a good game. But then again, i am still yet to play LIS, apart from intial first 30 minutes or so...so why bother with a new one?
Meanwhile, i bought CnC Remastered. After playing one campaign mission and one skirmish for about 90 minutes combined , i feel satisfied. 20 bucks well spent...not.
There is this really exciting game guys. It's called Fortnite
Yeah, I also notice lately that games are not that exciting anymore.
