Anyone have any experience with this game/effort? My experience with Galciv3 has me dying to crack the hood open and peek in, but that seems to be exactly what FreeOrion is. An open-source, 100% fan-based, fan-sourced 4X space strategy game.
Personally, I would do away with the "free" part. I would rather pay somebody. But I also want the source code, and for paid moderators to maintain the health of the code's main branch. It's like I own the product, but I pay them (who also own the product). As opposed to the traditional model where Stardock owns the product, and you purchase a license. But you can't have everything.
Hey, I've been an active FO player for almost a year. The game is pretty well balanced and has a lot of replay-potential. The overall gameplay is kind of always the same (colonize, produce military, conquest) but all the different shiphulls & modules for them allow for alot of different strategies.
I liked this game very much, but the AI is not really clever (too much random decision) and the game becomes unplayable (due to lag) on bigger sized galaxies after some time (around +1000 ships on the map)
Thanks for the info. I eventually decided not to dive into FreeOrion because it uses starlanes. The lead architect has been adamant that he will stick with starlanes instead of hexes/squares because the AI is easier to code. For me, though, if I wanted starlanes, I would just stick with Sins..Solar.
