At the start of the battle it looks fine and as long as you dont change the camera mode or scroll your mouse to zoom it stays the same. But if you zoom in/out while in Free camera mode it goes all blurry. All the other camera modes seem to work and you can zoom in/out with them its just Free Camera mode that has the problem.Likewise if you change camera modes as soon as it gets back to Free camera mode, with or without zooming, it is blurry/low rez.It seems to only effect the 3d assets, the menu is unchanged.

I have had this issue as well.
Had? So you found a way to fix it?
I have this too, not a major problem. Is there a workaround?
This issue is not consistent across my games. I noticed it on Saturday. Saved, reloaded and it was not an issue. Seems to crop up after hours of playing, perhaps related to memory. I save a lot in case there is simply a crash which I have had (the game simply closed all the way to desktop and goes away).
Hmmm, haven't noticed this but I have to admit that I haven't been using the battle viewer much lately. Will do so tonight when I sit down to play a little and see.
I have a save file just before a battle if that helps anyone at Stardock. Also in case its a game settings issue I could upload that to.
Its so odd when it happens lol, its like I lost my glasses all of a sudden. I wonder if its just a FOV setting where the game is trying to focus on the wrong thing in battles since it only happens in free camera mode, or cinematic to in some cases.
Just did several battles with using the battle viewer and I haven't seen this. Maybe it's linked to what Larsenex said and how long you've been playing is a factor and/or the amount of memory that you have. I have 32gb but didn't play that long while testing for this. Guess I have to do a marathon session tonight! Purely for scientific reasons, of course... I'm sure my wife will buy that one. LOL
I remember those days
I have 16GB, if that matters. I dont see any slow down or anything, although it really looks like a FOV (field of view) blur to me. Playing today in cinematic mode the ships the camera isnt following are blurred in a similar way to how the battle looks in free camera while the ship your focused on is clear. My guess is that when you go free cam the game is attempting a realistic FOV by blurring out the ships which are "far away" where it should really ignore it since the camera is SO high up/far away to get all the ships in. Then again im just a guy on the net guessing haha
LOL I can't believe I typed mb... that shouhld have read gb! Fixed it and thanks for pointing out my error.
And I'm just a guy on the net who has trouble keeping his mb and gb straight... but that does sound like a good guess to me!
I'm running 32GB of DDR4 RAM OC to 2666MHz.
It's a graphics glitch is all.
Please feel free to contact support and include the save games and image files so we can take a look.

I got a response back for the ticket "I believe this is normal for cinematic mode. Have you watched a battle in cinematic mode? I think the bokeh is on purpose. Please let me know if you have any further questions/concerns."Below is the response I sent back, but I thought I would get others opinions on the Free camera mode in case its just me who sees it as a problem. Likewise I might not be very articulate in my response so I thought it would be good to get maybe a better worded response if what I typed is confusing lol. Also i seemed to confuse the matter in my ticket as the Gif said 'cinematic mode' not 'Free' camera mode ... so opps lol
Edit: FYI Bokeh is "the visual quality of the out-of-focus areas of a photographic image, especially as rendered by a particular lens."
Hey! thanks for the reply In cinematic mode that is fine since it generally focuses on a ship up close so the main ship the camera is on is in focus. The issue Im referring to is to do with Free Camera mode, or atleast the side effect the Bokeh value has on the free camera mode. I think the gif says "cinematic mode" as I had the game paused when I took the screen shot and the camera dosnt change until you unpause the game. I have added some more images if that helps illustrate what Im talking about. -In the First Image its in the default Top Down view, the ships arnt blurred. http://i.imgur.com/Rwp7zc7.jpg -The second image is in Free camera mode, all I did was scrolled the mouse slightly which automatically puts it in free camera. The ships are now blurred at the same distance. http://i.imgur.com/smMBZPt.jpg -The last image is zoomed in more, they are still blurred. This is also in Free camera mode. http://i.imgur.com/JKISHK1.jpg What I think is the issue, if you even see it as a issue, is that free camera mode dosnt have a dynamic Bokeh value. Im guessing there is a xml value somewhere that sets the distance at which the focal point/point in which the blur for the Boken is set to. During Top down its set at a far plane value as to keep all the distant ships in focus, while in Cinematic mode the value is set relativity close to the screen as to give that "cinematic" realistic feeling. IMO the Free camera mode should have, when zoomed out, the Boken value of the Top Down camera to keep the ships in focus which you would want when moving the camera in the battle field. Then as you zoom in closer it should slowly transition to the cinematic camera Boken value. If that makes sense? That way you dont get this jarring instant blur when you go into free camera mode. As it is now the free camera mode is impractical at long distances. The other alternative is to remove the Boken value entirely while in free camera mode so that all the ships are always in focus. -- Im no programmer so maybe Im butchering the terminology, but I think the main point im trying to bring across is that free camera mode blurring when your at a zoomed out view is just jarring and looks strange Hope that helps!
Im wondering, does anyone remember if this was always the case in free camera mode and I never noticed? Or is it 'new' from the last few patches so i didnt notice it until now since I havnt played in awhile.
I have not used the battleviewer in a very long time (Due to the bug with autogenerated ships with custom shipsets not diplaying the correct GFX), so can not say if its new or old, I did however do a quick test earlier and yeah Free Camera is a bit odd looking.
For anyone interested Brad got back to me with a solution to stop the blurring from happening.
If you turn off depth of field in the options it removes the issue. It also disables it everywhere else however it seems, at-least so far, that really only noticeably effects the camera in battles.
Hope that helps anyone who was curious
