I can't find the thread now but a bunch of people were like "oh FA does some of this? interesting! maybe i'll get it when it's on sale"
Well it is now! : D
and it's a big one! less than 2 €
grab it while it's hot.
once you've got it FAF is that-a-way : faforever.com
Hmmm, I had the CD versions long go and lost them. Maybe I'll pick this up.
I can just copy paste the install folder to any computer and log in with steam, run the registry install steam does there and play. this game has a reputably long install (especially with the CD version where you have to run a bazillion patches) it's a breath of fresh air to be able to avoid all that.
I'm guessing the issue was solved ?
It was. I had the missing cursor font size issue.
OK. make sure not to miss out on FAF to have the 8 years of bugfixes, balance patches and community content (mods, maps, modes, co-op custom caimpaign... ect ect ect)
I even recommend you download the version of the FAF lobby i'm currently working on with Downlord (currently not standalone) as it is more up to date with modern demands. (in terms of aesthetics, UI, design, functionality...)
All that? I spent 10 minutes on the FAF site and it just looked like a matchmaking lobby replacement for GPGnet. Maybe the site could use an overhaul.
I told them!
They didn't believe me when I said so!
Also Galactic War. I forgot to mention Galactic War. there's not a season in effect right now but when it comes back it'll blow your mind

Company of Heroes 2 currently has the second highest game population of players, behind Starcraft 2, so I don't think this survey of 77 people is anything to go by as far as "what RTS players want". Surveys like that always have all kinds of selection bias issues depending on which site they get posted on.
You dont see Starcraft in Nr1 ,and Startcraft 2 its the Nr1 in most publicity game out there.
If not available RAM size and DirectSound issues, I could play FA for eternity. So pity that bugs and technical limits makes it to hate my mod pack. The only way to increase time before crash is to turn off mods or play with less factions.
actually no. you'll find I and the FAF forum can help you out alot there.
do you play fullscreen and/or dual screen?
try switching to windowed first. and you should see a net enhancement. (if you prefer fullscreen I have a script for this exact purpose : http://forums.faforever.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9778 )
then you can play with FAF. you'll see most of your (abandoned) mods are there and most of them have been picked up and made up to date by FAF members and even more are integrated into FAF (if that is the case do not install them on top)
stuff like coremaximizer is no longer compatible since vista.
are you running FA as an emulation in Linux? if not why are you mentioning DirectSound issues?
One of the things that fixes almost all issues with FA (albeit reinitialising your settings) is deleting the prefs.config file in My Games\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
you're have to recreate a profile on your next launch of FA and set your preferred settings once again but this will fix your sound issues almost guaranteed (nuclear launch and FX sounds absent)
Also supcom being an app developed in 2007 there was no support for anything superior to stereo audio. make sure that is what your O.S. is set to. if it is outputting 5.1 or 7.1 then FA's sound won't work.
keep in mind that activating a broken mod on top of a fixed sound FA is susceptible to break the sound again.
If you want a pure experience with no hassle around knowing which mod works and which doesn't. simply use FAF and only install mods through it's mod manager. it keeps track of which versions are obsolete; incompatible with each other and void because already integrated to FAF.
Tatsu, last time you've tried to help me with that problem, I've thought I got it to work with FAF, but shortly after I've noticed that test conditions were wrong - I've ran game with just 2 factions. After some extensive testing, I've determined that crash time is dependent to the count of players, unit cap, summary size of mods and count of factions in the game - that is, to the amount of resources loaded to RAM. And that were the bad news - our matches tend to be very big (4v4 with 1000 unit limit and all 4 factions on 40x40 maps) and average match length is enormously long (3+ hours). At such conditions, even stock FA can easily blow 3GB limit due to leaks, but to make things worse, mod pack grew big enough (full BO + TM + TVg, and more) to ruin large 4-faction game in 45 minutes. By dropping TM, it's possible to go up to 80 minutes, and stock FA dies in 120-140 minutes. BTW, that problem is not unique to FA - SupCom2 with RVE mod suffers from it as well if I reproduce conditions (Seton, 4v4, all factions). In a sense, the problem was always there, we've just made it bigger by inflating our matches to such an enormous scale. I'll try windowed mode hack and report back later, but as of now I have little to no hope - I'm fighting that problem for 3 years with no acceptable results.
P.S. DirectSound/XACT crash is most probably caused by either by RAM limit as well (it is not picky about what DLL module it's going to blow up), or the overload of the sound card driver - sometimes there's just too much sounds, especially with Total Mayhem at 10x speed. Profiles were recreated a lot of times during our countless tests, and audio systems are just simple stereo - no 2.1/5.1/7.1 or something fancy. BTW, is there any list of broken mods that affect sound?
Update: tested FA in windowed mode, up from 45 to 50 minutes, then 0xc0000005 again. ForgedAlliance.exe RAM consumption displayed by task manager is 2.2GB at the moment of crash, so the real one can be 3GB (it's kinda hard to measure properly). Also, at 20th minute Windows detected memory leak in ForgedAlliance.exe and reported it with RADAR_PRE_LEAK_WOW64 event. I'm starting to think that writing my own SupCom-like game is easier than fixing that crash (assuming it is possible without access to FA source code at all).
uhm this is not at all normal. I highly recommend reinstalling windows. Something sounds broken in your OS. You seem under the impression that everyone necessarily gets these crashes but I don't and most of FAF with me.
heck I've accidentally left AI bashes open for full blown 6+ hours because I'd cut the sound gone to desktop then gone off to cook and forgotten about it. and these had well over 2000 units in them (funnily enough the AI hadn't manage to kill me in that time).
Is FA installed in another drive than C? did you try uninstalling it completely clearing it's APPDATA folder and reinstalling?
do you use steam version?
Crash was reproduced on at least 3 PCs, and Windows was already reinstalled on some of them (even twice). One of PCs is still on Windows 7, others are on Windows 10. FA version is the old one (non-steam). Everything is on C drive everywhere. Just tried to clean profile data related to FA, but it still crashed. I'll try to test it on the completely new monster laptop, but most probably it will behave exactly the same way.
